I love the idea of this, but lots of these characters need to be toned down. I like minor stuff like starting with a few extra bombs or ropes, extra health, ect, but everything that gives you something per level is busted and should have a downside. Classic Guy, for example, could start with a shotgun at the cost of not having forgiveness.

Very creative with the classic guy one (because you couldn't get forgiveness in spelunky classic after killing a shop keeper) but it would still be pretty powerful. I mean, just don't upset the shopkeepers XD

This is something I hoped would be in spelunky 2 before it came out. It would’ve added so much replay ability just like in The binding of Isaac. If they did this in a spelunky 3, I’d be ecstatic.

The thing is that it would ruin the point of the characters looking so unique and different because everyone would just choose the best character every time. It'd also make speedruns either only use a certain characters or there'd be categories for every character.

if mr. uunga buunga was playable it could actually be so cool, imagine he can just make an army and just have any caveman tikimen or witch doctor follow them through levels, and maybe outside of combat they followed the players exact movement unless one of the blocks in a 3x3 radius of the path they're taking changes (lava flows, platform falls, trap goes off, also they would wait for shock walls and try and go around the shock balls ect.) maybe too demanding but ehhhhhhhhhhh just a dream thought :\

Because you can't play as any character when you first start the game. You need to unlock them by opening coffins in various areas, e.g. Vlad's Castle or City of Gold. The game does have a save file based on which characters (that is, skins) and shortcut doors you've unlocked, and a few other things which never affect the run itself (if you start from 1-1). So if you got the game and didn't have anyone yet, the goal would be to unlock them to make subsequent runs easier, which defeats the purpose of each run being isolated and legitimately losing everything when you die.

@@TtronX Many fans would argue that those are technically roguelite features. The idea is that any feature which allows any form of permanent progress or unlocks in a roguelike makes it less of a roguelike by nature.

If you've angered shopkeepers, you can avoid hurting them to make them forgive you. Every level you complete without damaging a shop keeper will bring you one step closer to forgiveness

@@jackhasgames thanks dude, 😊 played some spelunky2 tonight on my gamepad which is easier, my gf says my button config is all messed up but what the hell, works for me. Usually do volcania-tidepool run but have been experimenting on jungle and after 212 hours met the Queen bee for the first time, 90% journal complete. made it to hundun 3 times but never killed him, have you got to cosmic ocean yet?

Just because you have to unlock them. If you started with all the characters then it would still be a roguelike, but you don't.
