95% OF THE TIME. Charging takes 10 seconds. 5sec to plug in. Go to sleep. 5sec to unplug.

Spot on! the only lingering issue is on road trips to remote / desolated areas where there's no charging infrastructure (other than 110 v outlets). then it becomes an inconvenience to travel with ANY EV (talking by experience) - although with the Tesla and because the range is so good , I've never had any issues - just needed to be mindful of battery charge, range left and have a less heavy foot if I wanted to make it to destination (which in a gas car is not even a thought) - even with that I've never will go back to gas cars - waiting on my cybertruck to enjoy those remote areas even more :)

Yes- one of the inconveniences is driving a few miles to get to a charge location. They aren't as plentiful as gas stations. But Tesla is expanding the Supercharger network year over year, and other DC fast chargers are coming online, so that will be less of a concern over time.

As a Tesla owner for over 8 years I like how Tesla has positioned chargers in locations that enable you to do other things while charging. Dining or shopping ect. This also reduces your time spent charging to zero. My complaint now is that when I eat out I have to leave my meal to unplug as charging is finished before I am..LOL Never will I go back to a gas vehicle.

I never thought to add the ICE maintenance time when doing such comparisons. Spot on!

Thank you! When I was writing up talking points, I had visions in my head of being in line at our local oil change place (behind 3 other cars), waiting an hour just to get into the bay for service. Making an appointment at another place wasn't much better - we had to take two cars in the early morning to drop one off for the day and drive back home. I do not miss maintenance visits :) It's definitely worth considering when thinking about the time difference involved with owning either type of vehicle.

Nice breakdown. Adding the maintenance time really tips the scale toward Tesla, as any oil change, ICE maintenance visit is easily half a day, especially at dealerships.

100% agree. I always dreaded the oil changes and was often overdue with procrastinating to find a 'convenient time' to take the car in.

I think you ought to add in some amount of time for ICE vehicles on roadtrips (short and long) for an actual meal break - not just bags of pork rinds and Mt. Dew. When I stop for a long charge in an electric car, I have plenty of time to actually grab a real meal. That ICE stop for fuel is not budgeting for even a drive-thru trip to McDonald's.

It's called The Myth of the 5 Minute Fill-up. Petrol station associations and transportation departments all know how long the average traveler stops to fuel up or to use the highway rest stop and it's between 8-12 minutes. On an 800km trip, regardless of ICE or EV we'll stop 5 times. Our EV stoppage time averages about 8 minutes longer per stop than petrol. When you're driving for 9-10 hours anyways, it's not that big of a deal.
@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort Жыл бұрын
That is exactly why I thought to make this video. It's not that big of a deal, but I hear (from a lot of non-EV owners) how much more having an EV adds to road trips. Just looking at that component of time is very narrow-focused as compared with overall ownership experience/time involved.

can you calculate how much money you save in a year by not buying gas as your fuel. I suspect your making over $100/hr during charging
@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort Жыл бұрын
I did a video last March on that topic ;) I used two gas-engine vehicles that we previously owned. I am thinking to make an update video to show comparison with other vehicle types in the same size/function class as the Model Y. Roughly speaking, I'm saving 1/3rd of gas costs by using electricity, but this varies by location (utility charges) and what percent of home vs. Supercharging is done. Thanks for the watch!

So as someone who will be using the Tesla for ~4 LONG road trips a year it will make my commute wayyy longer?
@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort 9 ай бұрын
For long road trips - yes. If most of your driving is 180 miles a day or less it won’t add anything to your commute time as long as you charge when the car is parked at home.

I enjoyed your video John. Fast paced. Easy to understand. In addition to your wrap-up. I think the extra hours are well spent when considering electric vehicles help reduce carbon emissions. Best regards from Denmark.

You did a very good presentation. One of our sons has a Model Y and is driving from Indianapolis to our home in South Central NY State as I write this. It was fun to check out the charging maps showing Tesla and non-Tesla chargers. They seem to enjoy the car. It is something (an EV) I have considered for one of our vehicles in the future. Thanks for the well rounded video.

Thank you! Just a word of caution (as I was warned): don't test drive the Tesla, or you'll end up getting one. I found that true after I got behind the wheel of a colleague's Model 3. Instantly hooked.

What I found is that while driving an ICE vehicle with my family on long road trips, we might only stop for 5 minutes for gas, only to stop 10 minutes later at a rest area because someone needed a bio-break - which typically would add 15 minutes - so if you combine both the gas stop and the rest stop - it would be about 20 minutes. Perhaps more if we had our dog with us. If I was traveling solo, then those numbers could be more streamlined since less bladders means less stops - however, I like to get a drink/snacks while driving solo - and my bladder does not have 200 miles of range - so I could budget a 20 minute stop every 150-200 miles anyway. Turns out, my Model Y can keep going 20-30 minutes of charging every 200 miles pretty much all day - as long as I used v3 superchargers and no waits for a spot. Perhaps on super long trips I would need to stop and charge without a significant additional reason - thankfully, Tesla includes in-car entertainment. I thought my family might complain about the additional time on road trips and this hasn't been the case. The only complaint is they wished the Model Y was a little larger when we take the dog with us (vs the minivan). I will say that everywhere I have wanted or needed to go within the last year have had superchargers available (or close enough), there are still several spots still difficult to reach and have driving range once there - many of the National Parks are that way. I'm really hoping the charging infrastructure starts hitting the more remote areas for those that like to go on an adventure.

Thanks for adding that. I think your experience is pretty typical for family road trips. We felt the same when we took our two kids on road trips. I always felt better to enjoy the journey than fight a timeline.

Wooo What up Duluth!!!?? I think if you add in the commute time to & from the gas station, plus the cost of gas, compared to just charging at home, you could probably add more time & costs to the weekly ICE numbers. Don't forget about how long the lines at gas stations can get when there's a fuel shortage or when gas prices spike and everyone is trying to find the cheapest gas. Plus, I really think people forget about all of the maintenance costs of ICE vehicles (Belts, oil changes, fluid leaks, smog checks, catalytic converters being stolen, and just more parts in total that can fail). Either way, this is a great breakdown of the compared costs!

Great points. And nice shout out for Duluth! (Although we stop there often enough that my wife is starting to want more than the Supercharger stop - haha).

Good list of comparisons. Do you work with numbers? Seems like you enjoy this aspect of your posts. And I've only ever had a EV this past week. Still waiting on the garage charger install but I haven't found the stops to recharge a crimp on my daily routine. Target/Whole Foods/bank all near me have fast chargers. In a weird way sitting in the EV while charging is almost like a decompression chamber for me since I need to just sit there and relax.

Great affirmation! I like to share specific information when I can and show others how i got to it, so they can make own comparisons. Mostly, I'm using data from my experience as a single 'Model Y case-study 'to help inform and bust myths/misconceptions that people have heard. Best of luck on your charger install! It will definitely add to the convenience of owning in that the car is ready to go when you leave home for work/travels/etc.

Great vid comparison, ver focused on that 1 “complaint” lots of people have. I’d say 4 hours /year for oil changes is optimistic tho, that’s F1 pit stop speed! My brakes needed constant maintenance in my Ford, many multi hour dealer visits over the years

You're correct - I was very conservative on the oil change time. The reality in our location is to wait for an hour to get into a service bay (for 'rapid' oil change places) or for two of us to take a car, drop one off for the day for a service appt, carpool to work, and then go pick it up. Any way we tried it, it had a high 'hassle' factor.
