Fun fact, this was the first single off their album Nightmare. The album was written with their original drummer The Rev. Unfortunately, The Rev died of an accidental overdose before recording the album. So they brought in The Rev’s favorite drummer, Mike Portnoy (of Dream Theater), to record what The Rev had written for the album. The album artwork features a headstone the reads foREVer as a tribute to the late drummer. And the last scene of the video focuses on The Revs old empty drum set as Shadows sings “nightmare” as though losing their longtime friend and band mate was a nightmare. As for the video, there are several references to other A7X music videos put in as Easter eggs. The bulging eyes refer to Bat Country, the spider refers to Afterlife as does the dancing with the skeleton.

Some more interesting facts- The band originally had no intention of releasing a music video for Nightmare, as they didn't want to make a video without Jimmy (instead they did a lyric video). Eventually they got a call from Wayne Isham, who directed some of their previous videos, saying he had a great idea for a music video. The guys tried to shoot it down right away, saying they had no interest, but Wayne convinced them to hear him out. He then detailed his vision, which was based on a scene from the cult classic movie Jacob's Ladder. The band was stunned, as this had been one of Jimmy's absolute favorite movies (though he'd never been able to get his bandmates to watch it) and he would talk about this scene in particular, and how creepy and awesome it was. Wayne had had no idea about Jimmy's love for the movie before he'd suggested it. The guys quickly started coming up with ideas to feature in this hypothetical video, all based around references connected in some way to Jimmy. They got so excited that they decided they had to actually make the video. So that was how it came to be! Matt said there's "a million and one references to Jimmy" in this video, which tells me there are more things that most of us aren't picking up on that have ulterior significance. There have been plenty of covert references made by this band in other contexts that flew over my/everyone's head until one of the members casually exposed the meaning, so it is in line with Avenged's style, haha.

This whole album is a tribute to their late drummer “the Rev”, the album closer “Save Me” is an absolute masterpiece, it’s 11 minutes long but I think it’s probably their best song, highly recommend this whole album

So a little back story to this song (to the best of my memory): Originally, this album was going to be a concept album about existentialism, the human condition, etc with a twist on someone who has recently found out the only had a few days to live. (This was later put into The Stage album). Unfortunately, on December 28 2009, beloved drummer of the band Jimmy "The Rev" Sulivan passed away of a drug overdose. The album was supposed to be cancelled and the band almost quit. In early 2010 however, the band had an epiphany. More or less, Jimmy Sulivan was the band. Aveneged Sevenfold was his baby, and the rest of the band couldn't let it die. They decided to finish the album, release it, and continue to make music. Rather than the original idea for the album, is was form fit into a eulogy for Jimmy. The album was kept largely the same hold for Mike Portnoy of Dream Theatre fame playing drums and touring with the band. A song I reccomend is "Fiction." It's from the Nightmare album, but it was the last song Jimmy ever recorded. Jimmy had layed down vocals for the song, and then passed away only 3 days later. Lead singer Matthew "M. Shadows" Sanders then turned the song into a duet between him and Jimmy, with Shadows being the stand in for the band, more or less being one last goodbye from the band to Jimmy. If you ever want a good hard cry, try that one next. Random list of songs I think really defined the band: With Jimmy: Bat Country (which I do know you're doing) Trashed And Scattered Beast And The Harlot Almost Easy Afterlife Unholy Confessions To End The Rapture Second Heartbeat Post Jimmy: The Stage (with Brookes Wackerman) Roman Sky (with Brookes Wackerman) God damn (with Brookes Wackerman) Planets (with Arin Iljay) Shepherd Of Fire (with Arin Iljay) God Hates Us (with Mike Portnoy) Save Me (with Mike Portnoy)

Scream studio version is one of Shadow’s best for his grit and belting. Crossroads is also one of his best for grit. He uses advanced compression and sings while inhaling for his grit, his vocal coach was Ron Anderson, he knows exactly what he is doing for everything he does. One of his vocal chords stopped vibrating from compression belting, the actual singing, and he pushed more air to compensate and finish the tour and got injured from it, but his actual technique has been flawless since the mid 2000s.
@jacobjohnson86862 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting! Where does that knowledge come from? I haven't heard him go into technical detail about that. Are you talking about when they had to cancel The Stage world tour because he hurt his voice?

I recommend Afterlife lyric version of live in the LBC 2008. Also the drum set at the end of the video and the white one at 3:56 are both of The Rev’s drum sets he used.

As always, awesome reaction. If you’re looking to see it live, I highly recommend watching it from Pinkpop 2011 or Download fest 2011. I strongly believe they are better live than they are in studio. From 2006-2014 (2008 LBC/2011 Rock Am Ring being their BEST performances) is M Shadows best years vocally. Throughout the years, they experiment with new sound (especially with the passing of The Rev) headlined by their latest and first concept album, “The Stage”. A year after however, M Shadows was dealing with vocal issues, resulting in canceling tour dates and they’ve been in hiatus ever since (which is why I recommend reacting to anything before 2015 if you really want to see what M Shadows can do vocally. He’s still good after but you can tell there is vocal fatigue, especially in 2018). THE GOOD NEWS IS, they are dropping a new Album this year AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 5 YEARS, they will be on tour, headlining Rockville festival Friday night in Daytona Beach Florida (I HAVE TICKETS)! Looking forward to more reactions!!

You should really react to Afterlife by them. This music video has call backs to the Afterlife music video with the drum set, the tarantula, and the guitarist dancing with the skeleton (in the original he dances with an actual woman). This video was done after the death of the drummer so it's partially about him as well.

This was one of two songs in which the videos showed their grief to their drummers suicide. This was the angrer filled video, he committed suicide and his pain and anger in the thought he's now in hell is felt throughout. So Far Away was his sadness shown, remembering the brother he lost due to the sickness he had. I liked that they showed both sides to their grief.
