Caitlin Clark is popular because she can shoot really well and the powers that be like her as a symbol of what they think success should look like. Whether or not she is awesome at professional basketball remains to be seen. There are players that are way better than Caitlin throughout the league. It's a little strange that they've not been marketed to the extent that Caitlin has. She has not won big at any level yet. Jordan, Magic, Bird, LeBron, Kobe, etc. all actually LED their teams to major victories. They were inspirational leaders whose performances and results spoke for them. Then the market adjusted to meet their value. Clark shoots really well and has never won big, yet there is a big market waiting to embrace her before she has done anything. To the people who say she is the greatest college basketball player ever...whatever floats your boat, but that is silly. If Caitlin at this point in her career was as good as her hype, no one would be complaining. How do you accomplish what University of South Carolina accomplished in the NCAA's - led by one of the Captain America's of women sports - and still find yourself as a side story to the emergence of a player who hasn't won anything? This disconnect does not reflect well on how straight people see in this culture, and the distortion is rooted in bias. I respect Caitlin Clarke work, talent, and skill, but Sheryl Swoopes, Dawn Staley, Diana Taurasi, Lisa Leslie, Becky Hammond, and Cynthia Cooper, Mia Moore, Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, and many other greats set the foundation for Clarke--even by her own admission. Could anyone who has ever watched Cheryl Miller in her prime actually be impressed by Clark? So, yes, projecting unprecedented value onto Caitlin that she hasn't actually earned yet is a problem, but, yeah, she'll take the money, because that is the market. No body ever said the market was grounded in reality, though.

Exactly. Caitlin is not a great player because she is white, but because she EARNED IT, just like Bird was not one of the greats because he is white, but because he EARNED IT. Tiger Woods was not the best golfer in the world (Maybe best ever, I am not sure) because he is black, but because he is THAT fucking good at playing golf. Race is not relevant, what matters is skill, talent, dedication and putting the work in. Caitlin Clark has the first 3 locked down hard and she sure as hell puts the work in to maximize her results. She earned every bit of what she has accomplished.

Caitlin Clark's initial college story was what put her on the map. She, while being an offensive juggernaut at the time, was an underdog that had yet to win a championship with her school. People were initially enamored by her play style but the more they learn about her, the more they liked her moral character. That's why people love her and why she's marketable. She has a combination of positive traits and she's a rare generational talent of the game. She is an ideal role model for fans, unlike some of these other women getting way too frisky up in Instagram. The majority of society don't want that.
