Thanks. A great reminder of Hawtrey's unique persona. I love his line as a pivate detective in Carry on Loving - "Subject left Cock Inn" !

So many of the carry on cast are considered eccentric, but I wonder if damaged is not a better description. I dont mean that in a bad way of course, I mean in terms of the laws of the time, and studio culture.

That's a really good point. I think you're right.

@@Doctor_Random Pushy mothers, violent fathers seems to be a trend. For Charles, as a child actor in Will Hay films, I wonder what demands producers made. The casting couch was a thing of course, was a thing still in the last decade, me too etc. To me, demanding top billing for what is now a pittance in todays money, might be more about wanting recognised for other sacrifices made.

Hawtry thought he should a larger presence and be paid more. He was fired as he was acting up.

Charles Hawtrey was a great actor, but obviously he struggled with his personal life, it can't have been easy living in those days for him, a shame as he was a very funny man.
@Doctor_Random8 ай бұрын
no arguments there, he was certainly a troubled man.

My favourite role of his is in carry on Cleo, with carry on screaming a close second 😊

He's got that 'they had to hire me' confidence in Screaming 😂

Brilliant video. What on earth was going on with Hawtrey in that final shot, obviously you slowed it down, but it seemed especially creepy. Did you use AI for interpolation?
@Doctor_Random9 ай бұрын
Thank you. Yep heavily slowed down, a hasty job using premiere's optical flow. I liked the slightly creepy look.

Hawtrey was an integral part of a good Carry On. He may not always have a huge role, indeed he nearly wasn't in Carry On Screaming but his presence is always welcome.

Charlie was so camp he made Kenneth Williams look like John Wayne But the carry on movies were never as good after the producers foolishly fired him and replaced with inferior character actors...
