It's very touching to watch 2 Japanese service staff helping to shield the old lady under the table. One had her hand over the lady's head, knowing she's a tourist experiencing her first shocking experience while her husband was speaking to her in a foreign language.

All japanese building are builded to hold on if there's any earthquake. Not just a small earthquake, but also the big earthquake. It is mandatory for all buildings there.

I was calm because that was my first time in Japan and thought that kind of earthquake was common and the building was on special earthquake sliders. It felt like being in a wok and being slide around. I loved it, I was surprised by all the yelling at the time.

A building that is on "sliders" and "rollers" always comes up when there's an earthquake (I live in California). There's construction that's withstands earthquakes better, and it is used throughout new construction in California, but I can assure you there are no buildings on "rollers."

Honestly, it was my first time in Japan. I thought trembles like that was normal. The building slide back and forth under my feet like it was on rollers. So I thought this is great, I get to experience a Japan earthquake. It was a once in several lifetime experience, I am so glad I was able to share it with everyone. :)

I love how those women protected the older one and got her under a table and covered her head with their hands. It's hard to know exactly what to do in earthquakes. I've been through enough in my life living in Calif. to know what to do when it happens.

I live in Southren California, and I hate earthquakes too. I've experienced two 7.0 earthquakes in my lifetime, but thankfully the epicenter wasn't close to me. The scariest one I've ever experienced was the Northridge quake in 1994, and that one was a 6.7 I think. I can't imagine living through a 9.0 quake. I would be having a panic attack like that girl. Poor thing.

Even in a 9.0 earthquake... People are helping each other to safety. Very little panicking. People still cheerful and polite to each other. No looting or rioting. People just lining up waiting their turn for food at groceries. Negligible structural damage(except the tsunami which there's no stoppin) < -impressive Man, what a great country and culture Japan has.

Actually I wasn't scared at all. I thought earthquakes like this happens all the time in Japan, I was surprise the Japanese people were freaking out so much. So being ignorant kept me calm. We are from Vietnam so you heard vietnamese spoken.

I experienced my first earthquake in PH back in 2012. I was so confused I still sat on my chair and continued to write notes from the lessons. It felt like I was having a back massage. Everyone was panicking, and when we were about to go down the stairs there weren't any lights so I was complaining about it while my classmates were crying that it felt like the end of the world. Still loved the back massage.

When I lived at midway island atoll we had once a year tidal wave drills. All servicemen and their families are mandatory to take part. I was 7 yrs old at the time 1970 thru the end of 1973. Population of midway at the less than 1000. The island 2 square miles wide and 2 million albatross seabirds nesting. I was a navy brat

I felt a tremor once, in the UK, in about 2008/9. The ground vibrating and the walls and windows creaking scared the life out of me. It was so unnerving. Measured about 0.8 on the Richter scale. Respect to the Japanese.

I live in Saint Charles Missouri and I’m 53 years old and in all those years we’ve had like to tremors both registered maybe around three on the Richter scale. I cannot imagine what it must be like to live on the east coast of Japan.

I found Japan is littered only when there is an earthquake, otherwise they are best example for discipline, cleanliness and neetliness. Perhaps no power on Earth can harm Japan other than natural calamities. It is a wonder of the world.

I had just boarded my flight to LAX when the earthquake hit. We experienced the whole thing from the safety of the airplane. Your video of the earthquake is quite interesting.
Wow that lasted forever. I grew up in the bay area in California and earthquakes were a near daily occurrence and the only one I remember lasting that long was the '89 quake during the World Series.

The earthquake in PA in 2012/2013 lasted about 10-15 seconds and it was super intense. I can't imagine one this long.

+Mezza Rarty That was my first and only earthquake experience. We are from Vietnam on a 4 hour layover. We got to sleep at the airport that night and stayed in Narita for 5 days and had an extra vacation in Japan. It was great. Merry Christmas to you too, thank you.

I'm Japanese living in Tokyo. Japanese are used to earthquakes, so we might look calm compared to foreigners. Restaurant and store staffs are trained to protect customers. But 3.11 was huge even in Tokyo.

In these situation, you don't need to worry about the possibility that building such as Airport and station is destroyed. But, you have to awere of stuff above you. You are reccomanded to be under desk to protect your head from falling.

17th Sept 2011 at about 8pm was the first time I experienced a quake,it was 6.5 in magnitude and epicentre was about a hundred km away from my home,well I was only 8years old and outside there was a thunderstorm,so no electricity The quake remained for about 30sec but I was shaking for 30min
