I thought so too, we know who is stoking tensions (eg, over Taiwan, the extremely rude meeting at Anchorage, Pelosi’s irresponsible visit, and the “balloon”), and it is not China. Munger is normally blunt, but even he can’t criticise the US stupidity outright. Still, at least he is voicing his concern, so good on him.

It’s not possible to ‘catch up’ as such because innovation doesn’t stand still - it’s a moving target. That’s why mutual trade between participating nations will triumph dramatically over any self-excluded or partly excluded Nation.

Mr Munger had to say. “… both sides are stupid…” because he is an American and resides in the US, to avoid being criticized for being unpatriotic. The reality is that there’s just one side who behaved stupidly since the time China prospered and rose to the point of surpassing the US, technologically, economically, diplomatically and even militarily. The true stupidity is not that much in the people; the core problem is the absolute inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the political electoral system of the US. In these types of political systems, the best leadership candidates you can get belongs to the lower quartile caliber at best. If the US continues to utilize an electoral political system to find its leaders, its sun might set soon, probably permanently.

I copied this post from a Taiwanese guy named Tigger Hanson ..... I was born in Taiwan and would like to share with you about the change of Taiwan in the last 15 years: During 2008 and 2016, people in Taiwan and China have been very friendly. The tourist industry and the trade benefitted Taiwan tremendously. Both sides shared a agreement (i.e., The 1992 Consensus) that people from both sides were Chinese even though they have different systems and they made the “One China” interpretations in their own ways (OCI). However, there is always a group of people in Taiwan refusing to admit that their ancestors were Chinese and they chose whatever ways to undermine the eventual unification of the China and Taiwan. In 2016, this group or Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won the election by spreading the hatred of China and again in 2020 by exploiting the fear of Hong Kong's riot. The elected president tore up The 1992 Consensus and started cutting all ties with China including changing the official Chinese history books for students. After Trump was elected president, he accepted the congratulation phone call from Taiwan's president, which breaks the US-China tradition since 1979. For president Trump, Taiwan is the best dagger he can use to attack China. He increased the weapon sales to Taiwan along with the trade wars and tech wars against China. After the outbreak of COVID-19, Trump grew desperate and blamed China on spreading the virus as the main strategy of his re-election. He sent the high level officials from US to Taiwan to provoke China. For example, they cut off the mask supply to China in January 2020 and they refuse to bring the Taiwanese in Wuhan back to the island. They spread lies that WHO failed to heed warning from DPP and demanded the resignation of Tedros. They also require that anyone from China would have to be quarantined for 14 days even when the virus in Wuhan had been under control. The Taiwan president kept calling WuHan Virus to enrage her base just like Trump until the end of his presidency. And, DPP made no effort rejecting Trump's request to move TSMC's most advanced production to Arizona and ban semiconductor sales to Huawei. In case you don't know, TSMC is considered the silicon shield of Taiwan since it is a national treasure that China would not want to destroy. It is hard to blame the people in China that they felt betrayed since DPP used the huge trade surplus $150 Billion) with China to buy weapons from USA. In 2022, Pelosi as the 2nd person in the US presidential line of succession, provoked China again by visiting Taiwan. Washington's goal is to steal TSMC and Ukraine-ize Taiwan. And, China Hawks in Washington and Think Tanks would like Taiwanese to fight to the last person if the war breaks out. Taiwan's ruling party, DPP, is happy to play the anti-China card to hang on to its power by spreading lies to fool Taiwanese. For example, DPP, in late 2020, shut down a major TV station (CTI News equivalent to Fox or CNN in the USA) which supported the opposing party. And, the justice department is fully controlled by DPP. Taiwan is no longer a democratic country as US government and media are trying to paint such picture to fool American people and the world. The good news is that Taiwanese started to realize that USA is preparing to dump Taiwan as Trump/Biden forced TSMC to transfer their most advanced semi-conductor manufacturing technology to USA. Therefore, if the war breaks out, USA can afford sitting on the sideline. The war game simulation further revealed that Congress had no intention sending US troops to fight PLA. Let us pray that the Taiwanese people would wake up and throw out the DPP regime in the 2024 election. Then, Taiwan and the whole world will be much safer.

@@jamiemiller6156 Taiwan's own constitution states that Taiwan is a part of China. Taiwan's official name is not even Taiwan. Taiwan's official name is Republic of China or ROC for short. Are you going to sit there and argue that the Republic of China is not a part of China? Even Taiwan's military is named after China. Taiwan's birth certificates, death certificates, money, banks, universities all have the word China written on them or the word China on their names. Taiwan's government for decades used to claim to be the legitimate government of the whole of China. Under their own constitution every Chinese in the Mainland is a citizen of the Republic of China. They used to represent Mainland China in the UN security council up until 1972. The only reason they don't anymore is because the entire world voted to kicked them out and replaced them with the government of the People's republic of China. Because the government of the People's republic of China has the support of the majority of the Chinese people. Taiwanese are Chinese, speak Chinese came from China. Okinawans are not Japanese and don't speak Japanese and did not come from Japan. They used rk be a seperate Kingdom called Ryukuo thst was taken over by Japan in the late 19th century. Same thing with Hawaii. Hawaii was a seperate kingdom internationally recognized as a sovereign country u til they were taken over and annexed by the US.

Charlie says both sides are equally responsible. Is this really the truth as he sees it? I would like to see some evidence of China bullying the U.S. As far as I can see, China only responds to the bullying from the U.S. If one person slaps the face of another, and the other responds by slapping back, is this what he sees as equal bullying? I don't understand this logic. Is he proposing that it's not stupid to just let the first person keep on slapping without slapping back? I am a simple minded person and just don't have any respect for this kind of reasoning.

Smart people but they're not really characterizing this properly. Most of this aggression as of late has been one-sided, with the US taking an adversarial position and China responding, generally with a lot of restraint. Also, Apple is a very poor example of the benefits that the US can enjoy in its relationship with China. One assumes that Munger has spent time in China, in Shenzhen, in Shanghai or has seen many of the megaprojects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge. Anyone who knows China realises that in many ways China is far ahead of the USA, in particular in infrastructure, in payment systems, in high-speed rail, in electric vehicles and so on. The US would benefit hugely if it had friendly relations with China. The potential to use China as an inexpensive place to produce goods is only a small part of the gains the US should see.

After all they have so much capacity in steel production, so when trades are slow, use it to build destroyer, air-craft carriers, submarines, frigates, hypersonic missiles and what have you! Notwithstanding the west's dysfunctions and problems, I always ask myself would I be comfortable investing a large amount of money in said country. I have always found Munger's constant shilling and fawning over China puzzling. His argument is that the best companies in China are cheaper than the best companies in America. I tend to think along the lines of it's better to buy the worst house in the best neighbourhood than the best house in the worst neighbourhood. Many ex-pat Chinese on forums say the same - that China is not investable, while the non-existence of rule of law and respect for private property rights is overlooked by Westerners. Most of have no first hand experience on what life is like in the 'alternative' world. We will never know whether the Chinese leadership will drop the hammer in some awful and unpredictable way - eg nationalise their companies.

Newton's 3rd law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The US starts this trade war with China first, and China merely reacts to protect its own interests. The US sees China's development as an existential threat to US global hegemony and must stop China from rising. China feels this hysterical anger toward China from the US isn't simply about business disputes. But it is about the US wanting a new Cold War to destroy China as what happened to the collapse of the Soviet Union. New cold war or not, this time around, things are very different. China is more powerful than the Soviet Union, and the US is in decline. The US-China tension is running high...this is not good for the world. Hope cooler heads will prevail and trying to get along is the better way.

What aggressive rhetoric has china done to the US? I'm not talking about US propaganda talking points? Is the US aggressive? Ever since contact been made between china and the west, which country has suffered the most at the hands of the orher? Everything china does is a problem for America. In every forum all America does is talk about china. The world is changing and America's foreign policy needs to adjust to the changing times. No country can stay on top forever, it's impossible.

Let's start with the U.S. The U.S. knew how to use fragrant words for its mischievous behaviors. It accused China of economic coercion, but it's doing the same to South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Netherlands by threatening them not to supply materials/equipment to China. It accused China of subsidizing its industries, but the U.S. is doing the same by pouring money into chips and ev industries. There are many more. The U.S. is simply selfish and outright hypocritical to say the least!

You’re being helped too. Apple’s market cap accounts for ~10% of the US annual GDP, so part of your paycheck comes from the wealth created by Apple and contributed back to society. America is also still America today because of innovative companies like Apple, Google and Tesla who are out there competing to make sure America continues to lead.

We all know USA WAS number 1 in most fields and have been seriously challenged many times and their reaponse was not to innovate to improve but to destroy the other to stay ahead. China instead of just laying down and die they make their own of whatever was denied of them like the space station and chips. And any reactions on the part of China to American aggression ahould not be aeen as a stupid move but rather on national interest, we ahould remember nobody likes a bully and we always tell people to stand up against them or else they will be bullied forever. Ao no China did not make any stupid move against USA, in fact when the speaker mentioned American companies like Apple used to do business in China everyone benefited mutually and who broke those mutual benefits?

I don't see this as a China problem. This rivalry, enemy thing is invented by US since Donald Trump took office due to the fear of China's rise and then it kicks to a higher gear w/ the HK protests and Covid-19 blame game. So, I don't see this as a 2-way street....if Westerners want to resolve this issue...it's not in China's court, it's on their own turf. They need to look themselves in the mirror and accept that it is okay to have another power rise and be equal. China does not have a history of conquer and destroy nations like US have for decades, so what is the fear even if they rise? Nothing really. China's rise is a benefit to mankind. US's staying in power can be detrimental to mankind due to abuse of power and destroy as being exposed these days.
