What is so genius about Charlie being the straight man, outside of the initial subversion that you're misled to believe he's the most screwed up of them all, is although he's a selfish and egotistical gremlin just like the rest of them, the childlike innocence and vulnerability to him due to his upbringing makes it easier to get behind him or empathize with his goals than you would the others. And with him being the quintessential runt of the litter in the group with the lowest class status job literally being called "Charlie work" it means he doesn't ever feel the same unwarranted prestige the rest of them have that gives them their ridiculous narcissism, and so it creates a warped result where he inadvertently winds up being the most self-aware of them all, thus the one who finds it easiest to recognise the delusion and insanity the other four have, because that's how he's perceived and looked down on by them to begin with.

i think charlie and mac are the two members of the gang who actually still have a chance of escaping the perpetual cycle of negativity that they’ve been trapped in all these years. i really feel bad for them. mac has had to repress his sexuality for his whole life and his parents both hate him, and charlie is a fatherless victim of childhood sexual abuse. those two never stood a chance at being normal, but they’re much more sympathetic and redeemable than the reynolds family is

right! dennis is pretty much confirmed to be a psychopath (in the mental illness term not just the “insane” term), and whilst i believe dee also deserves better, she kinda destroys her life herself and sometimes has moments similar to dennis. frank is.. frank lmao but mac was led blinded and following beliefs that made him repress his whole being and tried pleasing his parents. and i know people will try fighting the whole charlie being SA’d as a kid, but the amount of moments and dialogues that hint at it are far too much, and that’s coming from someone who went through it as a kid too. that sort of thing can really mess someone up! so yeah i believe they could have a shot if this wasn’t a satirical comedy show

I think when you're just walking through a not great neighborhood, you watch your valuables, regardless of what sex, skin color or culture the people around you have. Hell some people *In* those neighborhoods will slap you upside the head if you're waving around or openly wearing nice stuff. Be smart, assume some people need your stuff more than you do. Also, the stereotypical "redneck" southerner, they have an aversion to *most* new people, even people that look exactly like them but look nicer, if they see someone that looks like they work harder, get dirtier, that's the only trait that doesn't get their bad side.

What I like is that each character lives in their own perception of reality. Mac’s where he’s a God’s chosen badass. Dee’s where she is funny, talented, and liked. Dennis’s where he’s a golden god of sex and perfectly sane. Frank’s where the world is his oyster where he can do whatever he wants. And Charlie’s where magic exists and he’s living the most ideal life. Whenever a character is presented with another’s reality that isn’t actual reality (or at least a reality that isn’t their own), they challenge it and try to correct it (usually Dennis or Dee) and I think this concept is perfectly represented in compilations like these and the gas station robbery episode

Dennis can’t be apart from his Roomate in his mid 30s and can’t eat apple skins bc mac said so. I think what I like the most about Charlie as a character is that he feels almost genuinely tragic, even within the comical confines of the show, without ever actually being tragic. He's a complete nutcase with no knowledge of boundaries or basic decency, almost like a little kid, and he KNOWS that he's kind of the kid/runt of the gang, and to a degree, he almost relishes in it. He unapologetically likes what he likes and wants to do what he wants to do, and even if he's not good at it or it's not good for him, there's a genuine enjoyment in what he does and who he is. Charlie ALMOST likes himself for completely normal and healthy reasons. The problem is that Charlie's in a group of friends that don't actually want him to be like that, or at least don't really get WHY he's like that. The rest of the gang looks down on him for being as idiotic, unaware, and generally immature as he is, and HE KNOWS that they're right because he himself sees some of that in who he is. Even if it's for the wrong reasons (basically being bullied into believing it), he's perfectly aware that he's weird in a bad way, that he's different, and that - perhaps because of the gang - something is wrong with him, but he never improves as a person because he's hearing it and getting it the wrong way. The gang doesn't find his bad quirks to be how unhinged or violent or stalker-y or unhealthy he is most of the time, they just think what he likes and does is weird. It's a vicious cycle Charlie's trapped in - he knows that, in some respect, he's not the best person, he finds himself weird and has that lucidity about himself, it's just that he thinks it's for the wrong reason. He can play the straight man so well because he's the only member of the gang who knows the kind of person he wants to be at heart, but he cannot escape the gang because he doesn't see the kind of person he ACTUALLY IS. Even if impressionable and immature enough for it not to seem like it sometimes, he's an insane, idiotic, creepy, and violent moron whose best aspects are that he doesn't REALIZE how horrible of a person he is... and if he weren't so mentally handicapped and surrounded by people who insulted and belittled him constantly for reasons ultimately unrelated to what he'd need to change or improve about himself, he MIGHT be able, in another universe, MAYBE, to see what's wrong with himself and grow as a person, but that time passed him long ago as is.
@AluminumFusion22
@AluminumFusion22 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, an aspect of his immaturity comes from him being coddled by his mom, and he may have repressed memories concerning his Uncle Jack, on top of his constant drug abuse, which started when he huffed glue he got from "Santa". I think besides Mac, Charlie is the closest member of the Gang to be a better person, as he mellowed out a bit when he hung out with Dee in the diner, and that was just one day. The Gang is a perfect storm of toxic co-dependency mixed with some distorted sense of camaraderie and they all bring out the worst traits in each other, even if Charlie, Mac and Frank all genuinely like each other.

@@AluminumFusion22a lot of the toxicity in The Gang definitely is due to Dennis’ influence. His psychopathy and his obsession with control mean he has to be the one controlling what they do, who they are to him and each other, and how they act in situations. Frank may be the most depraved of The Gang (I’m gonna get weird with it, I just want to be pure, im a man cheetah, throw the kids into the soup, etc.), but we know that even he has lines he won’t cross (do not diddle kids). If it wasn’t for it being illegal, I have no doubt Dennis wouldn’t be above having sex with a minor. He views the whole world as his sandbox, and the people within them as drones he can manipulate. He sees women as a thing to achieve sex with, not a person. Frank at least was willing to live with Charlie and treat him as a friend, and save a 12-year old from a wet T-shirt contest. Frank is the only one who is also immune to Dennis’s manipulation, as he only values Charlie and doesn’t care about anyone else’s opinion. Mac had the worst upbringing with parents who hated him and a Dad who was barely around, and developed a very toxic form of masculinity to cope with it (he absolutely loathes Dee) and repress his sexuality, which Dennis uses to assert control over what he eats and how he looks. He’s the one with the least amount of respect within The Gang due to his stupidity and his ignorance, and relies on Dennis, the head of the group, to boost what little ego he has. Charlie is the weirdest one, but he’s also the one that, despite his crazy flaws, his insane personality and his creepy interests (Charlie work, rat bashing, huffing paint and glue, night crawlers, sewer expeditions, stalking The Waitress), is also shown to be the most likely to be a better person outside of The Gang’s influence. His mother coddled him as a child and his uncle molested him, and Dennis uses that insecurity to degrade him and undervalue him, and make him the runt of the group. Charlie is the only one who disliked Schmitty to begin with, because he genuinely finds him annoying. Dennis only got tired of Schmitty after he suggested the boys be able to make their own choices without Dennis deciding for them. Dee is a bird.

Frank's reaction to Pondy after he says he just lies about having a vasectomy so he doesn't have to use a condom is absolutely hilarious. The entire scene Frank is pretty aloof but you can see his interest building the more underhanded Pondy gets. Danny DeVito is a legend. The scene starts 17:07.

I’m not sure that 8:29 counts as Charlie being a straight man as he is going along with Mac’s absurd belief that the man is a leprechaun and trying to get his supposed pot of gold…unless you mean Charlie being a straight man in the heterosexual sense and letting Mac go the gay bar.
@parryyotter
@parryyotter Жыл бұрын
No. It’s because Charlie understands exactly why Mac wants to go to the gay bar and knows about it when Charlie doesn’t. He’s at that point just appeasing Mac.
@5tinygrapes

Kind of, but mainly I think it's about how Charlie clearly knew the real reason Mac was going to the gay bar alone and didn't buy his explanation

Charlie as a straight man is really interesting because he can play the straight man convincingly whilst maintaining his insane personality. Watching the entirety of the nightman cometh or Charlie Work we see a character so in tune with his own insanity that he understands his friends’ brands of insanity perfectly and in doing so can judge the gang remarkably well.
