Great overview on thread Charlie. Good video for future reference and sharing with other new tiers. Now retired, I’m now in the “weeds” on tying and have time to focus on details of getting better. Thread is definitely one of those details.

Excellent stuff. Looks behind the curtain of the mysteries of threads. Was recently taking inventory of some older materials. Came across a few old spools of Danville "A" and monocord. Antiques

I'm left handed, but tie right. Uni is always flat for me and I have to spin the bobber if I want it round. This was an interesting video.

I'm currently tying with a spool of Veevus 6/0 and I concur with Charlie's assessment, it sucks. It bulks up quickly and breaks easily compared to other brands but it's the right color for what i'm tying right now.

Charlie, thanks for sharing your opinions on the various types and brands of thread; very informative. I certainly share your opinion on the Veevus 16/0: terrible stuff. A puzzling concept to use twisted, multi-strand construction for what is (as labeled, at least) their smallest diameter thread. It really defeats the purpose of a very fine thread. FYI, same deal with the Semperfli Classic Waxed 18/0: it's a twisted multi-strand thread. Yeah, it's small, but it ties like rope. Too bad, as the 8/0 and 12/0 Semperfli CW threads are quite flat and very nice. For the really small stuff, I'm still rationing my remaining stash of Gudebrod 10/0.
@CharliesFlyBox13 күн бұрын
@@mattspangler6386 the best small thread I’ve ever used is the old Tiemco 16/0…even better than the Gudebrod 10/0, but also gone from the market…but not from my stash!

Nice Charlie. Thank you. Just to say, Davie McPhail almost never uses any thread other than UNI 8/0... from the tiniest to Unlimited size salmon flies. And Ed Engle (Tying and Fishing Small Flies) settled on Veevus 14/0 when his long time previous favorite small fly thread disappeared off the face of the earth. Mike

Danville is my go to. 70 denier handles 90% of my work, 140 does the rest.

Is there a difference between the Veevus GSP and the Semperfli Nano silk? They are both GSP yes?
@CharliesFlyBox11 күн бұрын
@@terrhian677 yes, both gsp, and I’ve not used the Veevus enough to say much about it but I will say that Semperfli was the first company to figure out how to spool the stuff so it doesn’t tangle.

Charlie, I noticed the Danville 3/0 monocord in black and in yellow have been out of stock at CFB for some time now. You mentioned that there are rumors of the Danville Monocord being discontinued and I assume that's the reason for the poplar colors being out of stock. What do you recommend as a substitute for the Danville Monocord? Thanks for the great tutorial!
@CharliesFlyBox13 күн бұрын
@@edwardpack3294 yes, monocord is being discontinued apparently. The closest thing I’ve found for my uses is Uni 6/0

having tied for almost 50 years now, it's all to be taken with a shot of whiskey... great explanations tho. Danville was always the standard. Anyhow, these days every manufacturer's thread labeling make only a little bit more sense than hook sizes. Used to make sense, now it's all arbitrary. By the way, I've been given to understand that the timeless classic Danville 3/0 Monocord is gone. I have bought and used many spools of 140 denier Danville, which is now the "replacement" for monocord, and it is good but not the same.
@RandallChinery10 күн бұрын
8/0 was available in the 60’s but you had to blow to get it. I use Plumbers wax . 1. It’s cheaper 2. The tackiness can be adjusted. Danville is my main thread 🧵.1. It’s been around a long time and I’m used to it. 2. It’s way cheaper. 3. It’s available in multiple sizes and colors. Flat waxed nylon splits . If I’m tying tiny split threads 🧵, I’ll go with GSP or UTC . It’s my opinion that polyester absorbs adhesive better than Nylon. I’m 65 years old. Thank You 🙏

My question is , is what thread is good for saltwater tying , for jig heads, like what will hold nice. And the brands for saltwater
@CharliesFlyBox10 күн бұрын
@@TailzOutdoors less of a brand question than a size question. Something in the 140 denier or bigger category depending on the size of the fly. UTC 140, 210 or even 28p denier for really big stuff, uni 6/0 is at 135 denier…
