Yes but the real meaning is quite different. A Bird is a British term for a young women/girl. During the time this was written by the Beatles was also a time of social unrest in America with desegregation and voting rights battles of 1968. But Chase does a good bird call never the less.

When a very close friend of mine went through a difficult breakup, I left a note for her along with a candle and wanted to leave something encouraging to bring her hopes up. Knowing she always loves cheesy inspirational quotes, I ended up just writing “Take these broken wings and learn to fly” and now this song brings new meaning to us. Very beautiful arrangement!

This brings me back to when my grandma was alive. When I was little she'd play this on piano and try to get me to sing this with her. I just have to write this comment to feel better. I've just broke down so hard listening to this and still am.. my childhood dog Lucy is sadly doing quite bad right now and we might have to let her go very soon.. she's been my best friend and with me for more than half of my life.. she has been blind for about 3 years now due to a brain tumor and evrytime I listen to this song and hear the line "take these sunken eyes and learn to see" and "you where only waiting for this moment to arrive" it just hits me so hard to I will have to let my little blackbird fly very soon.. and that it will be alright, for me and for her.
