Nice job Chase...my experience after many years of amateur wrenching is that there is ALWAYS a glitch....so you handled that well. Whether it is a tool you don't have, a hidden screw, a little something is always going to hang you up. The only other piece of advice I'd give you is to catalog the stuff as it comes off the bike.....and keep an ongoing list of what you need to buy for re-assembly. If you wait "until later" to write something down you're gonna forget something that will hang you up on the rebuild side...also even though you're doing a video stop and take a photo at each stage for later reference, this can really pay dividends in remembering the sequence of things coming off and the order they need to go back on...my 2 cents. I'm having fun watching this!

I own a 2012 Monster 796 which is the exact same architecture as the 1100(just smaller engine) and I have to say you did way more work then you needed to do to get to the battery.

I have the same problem with my aprilia rs4 I have to remove side panels bolts and lift the tank to get to the battery witch is just behind the triple tree where normally the air filter is, but for some reason they decided to swap it round and placed air filter under the seat and half way under the tank so if I want to remove the filter I have to remove the tank and the seat. Glad you didn't try to crank the engine. FYI, if the scroll screen you see when the key is turn on reads "M1100 RACING", that usually indicates the ECU has been reflashed or replaced. A replacement ECU comes with the Termi exhaust package thanks to a Ducati/Termignoni partnership, if it was purchased through the dealer. The tune is Ducati-approved.

Much respect for diving into a project like this and learning as you go on the internet!!!. You probably should have started with something that didnt have engine damage. Anyways the scrolling message said something like "1100 racing" you likely have the Ducati performance or race ECU to go with the exhaust. Also....my Ducati has the battery is under the seat, so not all of them are under the tank

I know it's not really an option for you but what usually helps with bolts that free spin like that is a bit of pressure in the right direction and an impact gun to quickly spin it out. Speed helps.

Just a helpfully note, you should never keep the front forks compressed with those straps, it can damage the forks and the seals could leak or burst causing a lot of unneeded damage, the easy thing to do is to loosen the straps when your not working on the bike. your not even supposed to keep them compressed over night like on a trailer, just a helpfully hint so no more accidents or frustraition ochre. Good luck.
@spencerhoffman68227 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, there should be a tool to get a bolt like that out. It kinda looks like reverse pliers. Two ends that you stick under the bolt that pull apart to take the bolt out. Used one on my car once and the bolt looked exactly the same as the one here (didn't have an Allen key on the other side either).
@ThadeuAzevedo7 жыл бұрын

you can use poppet pliers that you use on like car interior to jam under the bolt to hold downward pressure while you unscrew it. just a little trick you can use if you want
@titaniunhead7 жыл бұрын
There's a thin plastic above the head of that screw on the tank... It's a 5mm allen key... You can mark (27 millimeters from the end of the tank) and drill the plastic (it's really thin), the head of that screw will be there... Won't be any gas leak... I have a 2010 Monster 1100, and have the same problem with that screw... Sorry about my English, I'm from Brazil!!!
@Dsam047 жыл бұрын
Europe version of the fuel tank is the one you are looking at. I also have an 09 1100 monster. You should change the air filter while the tank is off.

I think think these build videos need more editing. No offense Chase but you obviously don't have that much experience working on bikes and it is making the videos drag out. I think you need to have more items to work on per video and try edit down some of your learning curve. Check out the "B is for Build" similarly learning about the mechanical side of things as he goes, but he is more liberal with the editing and tries to get a lot of tasks in each episode.

Side note, I wasn't a big fan of your garage makeover. yet it did turn out quite nice in the end. Does the bike stand itself just wobble or is it because of what's under it?

matty smith he also didn't know how to get the tank off because it clearly didn't follow the microfiche on his computer. he got the broken bolt off in less than a minute. but trouble shooting problems when your service manual doesn't even have it, when you're new to wrenching on bikes, is every guys nightmare

Audi really did something good with Ducati. My Monster 821 battery is just under a cover in front of the rear wheel. Also, battery replacements are really something common.
@milheim057 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the fuel pump primed when turned on. 6k miles is hardly broken in IMO. I predict it'll fire up once the crankcase cover and fluids are replaced.
@DesmoriderV7 жыл бұрын
If you need to replace sparkplugs on Yamaha or Honda, you should also remove the tank, but on Ducati the cylinders are in free access. The battery should be replaced every three - four years, or you should to unplug cables from battery if you will put the motorcycle in the garage for a long time(maybe in winter).
@shelbywatts12337 жыл бұрын
Just a little trick for next time that my dad taught me a long time ago is when you have a completely dead battery that is it's not going to charge is you take another battery say from your r6 (same voltage) and jump them together and put the charger on the dead battery while they are connected this will make the charger "think" that there is power and it will charge and it would then charge the battery. Most the time this has worked for me but sometimes the battery is just so bad it needs to be replaced.
