I was really loving the Forerunner 955 or even 965, their formfactor is IMO perfect. Clean and sleek, not too much of a bezel. But it was your video or another reviewer maybe that compared it to the Fenix line and boy the maps interaction was like night and day. This is one of my main buying points so I had to admit defeat with the Forerunners and that put me into the Fenix Pro line. Which are out of my budget... So after many videos and articles I think the Suunto Race is actually the best bang for your buck between Multi band GPS and maps/offline maps and navigation. Yes its lacking in areas, yes I still think Garmin is the best option overall but for a limited budget, they arent really cutting it. You go from reasonable to expensive really fast just to get a few extras

My only gripe with Garmin is the distance tracking is a tad off, and Apple's overall functionality is a bit more seamless. I want to be able to train for a marathon while listening to music on long runs. Based one what I’m seeing I don’t think the Watch 9 is even capable of making it through a 4 hour run + music, right? After 2 hours with music and GPS my first gen SE is mostly dead. I also want to hike and cycle. I use work outdoors on my AW SE for hiking maps, but I feel like it kills the battery. So automatically looking at Ultra on the Apple side. I’m thinking for my use case the FR 965 is the way to go?

After using the Apple Watch Ultra for 2 years, I have come to the conclusion that the answer is : BOTH! I love the smarts, integration and breadth of functionality of the Apple Watch (and I could not live without them), but I have concluded that the running specific functionality of the AW is unreliable for serious runners. Lots of small issues which add up to a big one. The wheel is sometimes hard to rotate, the action button sometimes does not work, random screen touches (eg when wearing a jacket), using different gestures to start, pause and stop a workout, Lack of maps / directions, not being able to use GymKit with workouts. The number of times that I have inadvertently terminated a workout, progressed through a workout or lost data in a race has been frustrating. So I now use the Ultra for most things and have a Coros Pace 3 for running specific features and a reliable backup.

Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen. I use the Coros to help me train for marathons and half marathons.

I currently have an Apple Watch. Battery life is the single most annoying feature of Apple Watch. I have had it for only a couple of years and like the recording of activity and the challenges between other Apple Watch users. I was recently on a cruise and wading into the ocean in the Bahamas killed the watch for a few days. I wasn’t too concerned since I was already looking at Garmin. I am an iPhone user and Garmin watches generally don’t integrate well with those phones. I have come across a Venu 3 which will allow me to make calls or texts based on the voice assistant. In my research I have found the compare option on the Garmin website to be useful. Thanks for your video.

Awaiting your thoughts on the updates from WWDC. Battery life on the AWU will still be an issue, however it looks like we'll be seeing wellness features reminiscent of Garmin, Whoop, et al without needing to use third-party apps. Plus proper offline maps in activity mode? Quoted from the keynote -- “…turn by turn directions for walking and hiking routes you’ve created." Give us tooling to build routes, or at minimum, GPX import and I'd be happy. WorkOutDoors is awesome in this regard already, but if it was built into watchOS even better.

I’ve been wearing the Ultra 2 and the Fenix 7x for the last few weeks and I’ve ended up sticking with the Ultra 2. I’m not a runner so don’t need that functionality, with weightlifting and walking/hiking the Ultra ticks all the boxes for me, and with the new updates for watchOS 11 it adds in a lot of the missing functionality. I’m also getting about 2.5 days out of the Ultra which is perfect for me. The only thing I really miss is how glances are laid out on the Garmin, it was nice to just scroll through and see data right there It’s a lot of the app integrations that also got me to stick with the Ultra, if Garmin could convince develops of bigger apps to also develop for them it could become a game changer, maybe add in cellular as well

Between Garmin and Apple I choose Huawei. Just bought the Fit 3 and GT3. Both do all I need as a hobby runner and the music player is awesome. I can transfer MP3s through BT to the watch from my smartphone. And I have a vast collection of downloaded MP3s. Heart rate is as precise as my Garmin Fénix 7 Pro (I checked it by wearing one on the left and one on the right wrist - they matched 1:1), GPS too. You can get a Huawei GT3 for slightly over 100 bucks.

I dont like to charge every night. Anything that lasts at least 4 to 5 days will be good. Also apple watches are closed ecosystem. If you don't own an apple phone well good luck. That for me is an extra expense.

Came here after Apple WWDC and now the choice of Apple Watch Ultra is much much easier because of training load and vitals app on Apple Watch. Currently using an ultra 2 and a forerunner 255. Will put the Garmin in the drawer after the release of the new features.

One thing though will be important. The AWU measure your heart rate once every few minutes (or so). For Garmin you can use to measure heart rate every second. This is important for statistics and data in my opinion.

@@ciprigeorgiu Yes, you are correct in that. Besides of training however it is as I said. Also in sleep tracking for AW it is only measuring HR few times during your sleep. I think it does metter. Personally I use AW and 24/7 heart rate measures is what I am missing.

I think there is often an assumption that Apple and Garmin are equally capable health trackers (i.e., heart rate and sleep). This is far from the case, Apple is FAR ahead of Garmin in accuracy. Now if they could only master battery performance..

Yup. Way better sleep tracking than the Garmins (at least sleep duration - not so much sleep phases but that's not something I can influence voluntarily anyways so duration is all I need), same precision when it comes to heart rate (tested it) and way better music player with the ability to put MP3s on the watch through BT. Huge advantage for me as I have a huge collection of downloaded podcasts on my phone. I own the Fit 3 and GT3. Both are great. The only downside of the Fit 3 is the missing pressure sensor so you can't get stuff like "hill score" or see how many stairs you climbed. The GT3 has a pressure sensor however. Used it today for the first time to track my morning run and it works flawlessly.

Another great video, I would say that where Garmin wins again is there are no subs for apps for covering feature gaps. Yes you might have to a pay a Dev a small fee on IQ for a watch face or data field but that’s way cheaper than say £27 p.a for Athlytic Pro.
