Can I tell you a Dolphin story. Many years ago on a trip up the East coast of Australia we were visited by a large playful pod. I was lay on the deck with a hand stretched out when Dolphin came up and touched my fingers! What a magic moment that i cherish!

Years ago an old salt told me to change our impellers every year. I did it religiously, inboard and the outboard, and never had a problem. Just like new docklines, new impellers are inexpensive insurance.

Next time you haul out, close off the engine through hulls before the boat is lifted from the water. I have had similar problems with air locks in the raw water strainer.

Great video guys! I found your channel a couple weeks ago and have been binging from episode 1. Pretty cool to watch Emma grow up in just a couple weeks. As a former sailor who's stuck on land due to permanent disability, it's awesome that I can now add this channel to the list of other sailing channels I watch. As for your starter batteries, consider switching to AGM batteries. I used them on my boat for years and they never failed me and didn't require maintenance, plus they're less than half the price of lithium. Also I found that aluminum/mag wheel cleaner for cars worked great in removing dark gray staining from my 30 yo mast and boom. If you give it a try I suspect you'll be very pleased with how it works. Just keep it off of painted surfaces.

Love you guys! I use small agm batteries for starting. You can pretty much forget about them for 7-8 years. I use Odyssey. Keep up the good work! Love the lithium house batteries. Some lithium batteries will shut down their BMS from the solenoid spark if used for starting. I had one that would shut down when using my electric windlass. Had to use a dedicated AGM for that as well.

We had replaced the starboard impeller right before the haul out. After the port impeller failed I inspected the Starboard and it was fine. The sea strainers are inspected and cleaned as we leave each anchorage. Thanks for the sub!

10:41 Good morning from Minnesota, The land of 10,000 dead batteries. The answer I use for my 2 batteries onboard my cuddy while parked on the trailer is a Minn-Kota smart charger. 2 bank, never over charges and I wired it to the shore power fuse panel. It was the winter storage answer to my prayers.

Need a Linh special on galley stuffs. I can’t keep salt or sugar dry for nothing. Seems like no matter what container I use moisture still gets in. Same with spices. Anything that comes in a box I repackage in a silicone ziplock

I use a jet ski gel cell battery battery on port engine and a motorcycle lithium start battery on the starboard engine. Both batteries can take the same charge profile as my Battle Born house bank.

i just noticed how the helm is set up and i like that design , funny i never noticed it before but i have to say it is such a pleasure to see a family like Mr & Mrs Onboard and Emma Onboard and little Compass living outside of the box and just drinking up life and something tells me Emma would not trade her life for anything , more than likely a hunk of plastic blocked the inlet under the boat because that use to happen to me all the time

We use pool supply silicone on our raw water impeller to provide a better seal and lubrication when replacing the impeller.

You are sssooo lucky on the impeller. Every time I had to replace one, had to take all the hoses off to fish out the broken off pieces. 😂

Nice work getting through the problems. Low starter bat is a common, after being on the hard. Yanmars are prone to air lock after being on the hard. Venting or back filling the raw water pump at launch will solve the problem.

Teal...I carry a large rechargeable battery jumper for these incidents....and YES ...LEAD ACID FOR RELIABLE ENGINE START...I not and will not use Lithium on my boats...prone to many weak links with All the control circuitry...and MANY Marine Insurance Co's will NOT INSURE BOATS WITH LITHIUM... Bow thruster. How about a bracket on the inside of both hulls into which you can slot a temporary electric bow thruster if and when you ever need it? It doesn't have to be below the water line. The cage that holds the thruster can extend down into the water. An electric line for this is run up into each of your forward compartments to be ready for the thruster as needed. I watch a lot of sailing channels. I know that it may be a few thousand dollars worth of extra expense but maybe it would be worth it especially if you are in coral atolls and trying to navigate around bommies. And even though a catamaran has two engines (MOST of the time!), helping you get into and out of tight spots in marinas would be greatly assisted by such at well.

We are exactly 3-1/2 months from real time as of today, sometimes we get as close as 2 weeks. Videos take time to produce, especially with busy schedules. But most importantly, it is much safer for family channels to have a bit of distance built in. There are many Sailing KZbinrs that run a year or more out. Our sweet spot is generally around 2 months, which gives us time to film/edit/produce/post videos and gives us enough space to feel safe.

This might be cost prohibitive for your large boat, because of cable length, but I joined my starter batteries together with an isolator switch between them. Then if one of my batteries collapsed or went flat, I could still start both engines with one battery.

Just been watching Teal supervising the new solar panels installation on Delos, I did suggest they keep him away from used paint masking tape. It is amusing that when ordering spares for a boat one can go overboard but that should be the only time that might be wise.

Hi Guys. Congratulations on another great episode and a nice fix. In addition to the comments about doing the same PM to the other engine, I can offer another tidbit. If your water flow diminishes again on same engine, and you know that you have already checked / replaced everything, give a thought to the exhaust elbow. If corroded badly internally, the water flow will be greatly restricted. This condition can also cause the raw water pump seals to leak. Don't ask me how I know! 😁

FWIW Teal, on my boat the 63 volt house battery bank keeps the 3 engine batteries charged with Victron solar charge controllers. This also powers the 12 volt systems on the boat when the engines or generator are off.

It seems to be almost a guessing game that requires checking of a list to find engine problems. Captain Teal found the culprit and slayed that sea monster. Great job sir! There are a couple of advantages having the engine exhausts outboard - easier and quicker to check on after starting and exhaust noise wafts away rather than echo and beat under the bridge deck. We also found less sooting on the hulls which made cleaning a bit easier

Before a long period of no engine time, shut the seacock on your engine raw intake, uncover the sea strainer and put a hose(freshwater) hose in and run the engine for 10 or 15 minutes to flush out the raw side of the system.

You need to replace that FLA battery..... I have a hand held battery tester that will tell me how much CA or CCA a battery has. FLA are good, cheap (well cheaper) and work as a start battery, but can't let them discharge too much. Linh and I knew it was the battery. Great minds... and yes it is good you are small to get into the engine bay. Ha ha.

By the way, engines thet have airlock points sometimes have bleeder valves for you to bleed the air out after you have opened up the cooling system. Find the owners manual for your engine online an see if there is one hidden somewhere.

Good Job on diagnosis and fix. Might be a good thing on future hard stay's to set up a closed circuit salt water wash that can be circulated through your engine from time to time that will keep your system wet and fresh for rubber parts etc. That is if your out and dry for a while..

You could replace your starter-batteries with AGM batteries...affordable and sealed so you never have to add water. They require a different charger which also maintains the batteries in other ways besides charging. Air-locks are real. It doesn't seem possible. When I built our home I poured a 5000 gallon concrete water-tank on a hill behind the house 150 feet away and plumbed to the house with 1 1/2" piping but couldn't get any water to flow. Finally realized that the piping was raised about a foot higher in the middle so I drilled a hole there, air whooshed out, then water squirted out and the house had water. I installed a valve to release air in the future if needed. If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it...that the weight of 5000 gallons of water on a hill higher than the house couldn't force it's way through a little bubble of air.

Maxwell have a 12 volt capacitor with an inbuilt charger, I use one to start a 6.7 litre Cummins marine diesel engine, safe as, 😊can be fully discharged and have a 10 year warranty, weight 10 kg.

Most clear plastics can't hold up to the abuse that this part gets. Also any sand or grit would mark and cloud the material.

If there's not one, there definitely needs to be a top bleeder valve on the manifold to purge the air in situations like this.

Someone was making one, but that cover takes a huge amount of abuse. The impeller wears into the stainless cover quite a bit, and the clear plastic only lasted a couple months.

So many marine diesels that I see on sailboats... the worst SP of F is the impeller. Why is this such a bad feature? What could improve this and not have so many failures? Or is this a purposeful design? And if this really is a point to be checked regularly, why do many people not do it? It seems like an easy maybe 10 min check at the most. Thanks for this vid. More info to file away for hopefully future use.
