It makes me think since Skizz used to work at Costco about a video they have of a great quote from Jim Sinegal (Costco founder): "The pursuit of excellence is what we're after, not perfection. Perfection is unattainable, it's neurotic and it's a terrible waste of everybody's time. On the other hand, excellence is very attainable, it's very healthy, and it's very worthy of all our time and that is what we should be shooting for." and that's something I feel like these guys both embrace and talked about today. about the shooting competition at the olympics: the turkish man who won silver did have ear protection, they were just ear plugs rather than over-the-ear protection. also the headgear that shooting olympians wear is basically something that squints for them so that their facial muscles don’t get exhausted after squinting to see different targets all day! the turkish man squinted without the manual squinting headgear.

That just means his stressing his vision and muscles more, not exactly a good thing to do. Reminds me when people say they still use a mouse for animation and the viewers go wow. But not realising it's much worse for their wrist and hand, it actually does more damage. I can't imagine the shooter is looking after himself by stressing his body out more, and people admiring that.

This entire episode reminds me very heavily of a lesson that i learned at my summer job that ended a couple weeks ago: "You have your comfort zone, your growth zone, and your danger zone." It's really easy to stay in the comfort zone and never reach into the growth zone but it's also easy to slip from the growth zone into the danger zone. Its all about knowing your limitations and yourself as a whole. I loved that job and i love this podcast, i look forward to this every week. Imp and Skizz have been my favorite content creators for a while and every week that just solidified more.

I love how you guys weave your marching band/drum line stories into episodes pretty often. I feel kind of validated in holding onto the nostalgia of my own marching band experience. I came from a high performing high school marching band and i was as deep in the coolaid as you guys were. For example, my band was about 120 people and we won most awards in our division. I got the best marcher award as a sophomore and was a squad leader my junior year and drum major my senior year. I played the flute, though, so drum corps wasn't really an option for me unless i learned a new instrument and i couldn't afford that. Anyway, back to the point, marching band taught me how to constantly strive to be better. To be part of something greater than myself. I often worry that i'm holding myself to such a standard as that time, and it's no wonder i keep burning out. Hearing you guys talk about it, though, in the context of perfectionism, has almost released me from that. I wasn't doing it alone, as i am with any pursuit now. I had directors and assistant directors, instructors, other student leaders, and not to mention learning from people newer at it than me too. I had community to help push for better and better results. That makes all the difference. It sucks that it is so hard to find that support in the real world if you don't know where to find it (i don't).

This was great to listen to. My wife frequently tells me "done is better than perfect" because i struggle with it quite a bit. It's all about the balance, and it does matter and is worth pursuing, just gotta avoid the diminishing returns and sunken cost and know when to call it as close as you're going to get reasonably.

My therapist always told me to pick and choose your battles. Do you want to waste your time and energy on useless things in life. Focus your energy on what will benefit you and will bring joy into your life. And everyone's perfect is different in their eyes.

I love your podcast very much. And as a content creator, I made a thumbnail for my video and listened to the podcast while I was doing it. And after I finished the thumbnail, I continued listening to the podcast, and after a few minutes I returned to the thumbnail and moved something a few pixels to the right. So now it's perfect :)

this is actually really timely because I just started film school, and we did our first group project today. It was supposed to be intentionally bad, and so we were given bad equipment and a short time limit to help us not worry about quality too much. But perfectionism struck, and struck the entire group hard. It was miserable trying to nail down every detail, to make sure everything was right. Even though we got it done, everyone was stressed and miserable by the end. So it's nice to hear an in-depth discussion about realistic expectations with that kind of stuff.

I am currently watching and I love the comment by Skizz, "It's the best we've seen yet." This is the best way to think of perfection. I strive for perfection and I know I don't really hit perfection, but it could be the best I've been yet. I have been following Imp & Skizz for a couple of months, thanks to finding Grian. I am a Minecrafter, gamer, and avid KZbin fan and these two are some of the best I've seen yet (see what I did there?!). Between the different genre's I am learning to have more confidence in myself and I am moving in a direction in life that I am not sure I would have had the motivation to chose previous to meeting Imp & Skizz. I hope one day that I can meet these two men because they are so inspiring.

Fun fact, and maybe I'm just being a psychology nerd and this isn't what this is about, but what Impulse said at around 45:40 reminded me of the mere presence effect. It basically states that whenever someone else is present, whether they are actively observing whatever it is you're doing or not (they can literally just be standing on the other end of the room doing sth else but still being within earshot or capable of perceiving you/your actions), we switch to our 'main' response. This means that when you're good at something, and know exactly how to do it, someone's presence will improve your performance (take for example professional piano players at a concert). But, when you're not good at something, or at least not very practised, someone's presence will be a *detriment* to your performance (take trying to learn a song on piano, and you finally got it down, but when a family member stops by to hear you play you suddenly mess everything up). I wonder if what Impulse described about not being a natural in improvisation, combined with the presence of the viewers during a livestream (and maybe some anxiety as well) is a display of the mere presence effect; while alone, everything usually goes great, but the moment somebody, or multiple somebodies in this case, watches, the improvisation of recording an intro/something for a video goes 'wrong'. Again, of course, I could be completely wrong, but I thought it was an interesting and fun thought to entertain for a second :)

When Impulse and Skizz were listing athletes who were passionate about being the best they could be, a quote came to mind from someone who also devoted his professional life to being as perfect as possible... “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence” - Vince Lombardi. Vince's passion for perfection drove his team and his players. They succeeded on the field and, for the most part, they succeeded in life. They applied that principle long after their playing days were over. In my opinion, Vince's quote reflects one of the healthiest outlooks on the attempt to achieve perfection I've ever heard... Know it isn't possible so don't beat yourself up during the attempt. Chase it relentlessly and you will achieve excellence. Excellence is an extraordinary achievement that anyone should be proud of.

Just started the video and I want to make a comment because of the thumbnail, I learned from a city planner on KZbin that "perfection is the enemy of good" and I have slowly been trying to take that in. It's hard to divide the line between what you want to do and what you can do in a reasonable time, but slowly I'm become more and more comfortable with projects that are 80-90% "perfect." I'd rather make (and sometimes share) something I'm almost completely satisfied with than nothing ever making it to the finish line. Impy seems pleased his son found his way to the 90s music. My son is almost 30. When we travel together, he lets me choose the music playlist. I often play "my" music. I caught him singing along and asked, "How do you know this? You aren't old enough to know this song." He looks at me with that mother-is-in-trouble look and that deep sigh he says, "Mother. You raised me." lol We forget sometimes as we are jamming out to our "old people" music that are children are listening. :) This podcast episode was absolutely wonderfully as every single one has been up to now. The perfect podcast is a conversation that is natural, flowing and not broken up by having to stick to a script. So yeah, yours might be on the verge of perfection mates. I'm a perfectionnist. It has that nasty effect of never letting me finish anything : I start, and go on until the first hurdle or failure or miss and then i'm like... Yeah, gotta start again. Accepting the absence of perfection, that a thing can be better if it's finished than if you try and make it perfect and fail, that's hard.

I’ve always seen perfection as the end point of one’s skill, time and effort for their current project. Everyone has a different level of perfection and perfection can be entirely subjective as well. But for many things there is such a thing as perfection

Around 45 minutes in, you were talking about your children's' music tastes. It's actually surprising how many people listen to music from before their teenage years. Even the 2000s is now seen by some younger people as old music that nobody listens to anymore, while I'm still listening to and singing old songs made by Stephen Foster back in the 1850s, and many people like music that's much older than even that!

If I could share my opinion on one thing, take it or leave it, I don't love the purple hue to the light that's shining on you guys. After a while it's a little uncomfortable and you already had it dialed in perfect before with the natural color light. The angles, the clarity, the contrast, all of that though is *chef's kiss* beautiful! Just a little opinion if it's worth anything to ya 😊. In my own setup I found two colors of "white" light to be an awesome mix. 4200 Kelvin is a great honest light for faces with 2700 Kelvin for accents. Again, it's just one way and one opinion in a world where there's no wrong way. Keep up the great work guys!

Skizz' "0.1 s pause" story reminded me of something my dad, an old fashioned sign writer, used to say. With regards the 'perfection' of a hand made sign, it's never going to be 'perfect' as it's done by hand and there will be errors BUT "up high nobody can see it, down low, they can't read it". On the rare occasion see that somebody spots a line that's slightly too heavy or a curve that's a little wonky *they're not looking AT your sign but at the line work in the sign* Or, shorter version... "perfection is the enemy of good"

The bit about Imposter syndrome is so relatable to me. I have a constant voice in the back of my head thats questioning everything I do or what other people might say about me. It's exhausting and I wish I could turn it off but it helps knowing its not just me 😅

I do think one of the most important things to remember in seeking perfection or just seeking any change is a willingness to be uncomfortable
