Thank you for doing Singapore's local food justice. This is likely the most in-depth series i've seen so far. It is hard to call any particular stall the best, for each stall you recommend there are at least 5 or 10 alternatives of quality. But it is a great job you have done. It reminds me of what a rich heritage our young nation has, and often taken for granted. Subscribed and looking forward to more! You should give those vloggers a lesson on how to properly do research instead of just copying. Tian Tian is my peeve ok deep breaths deep breaths

Thanks so much for your generous comments John15 Photography! We feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface of Singapore’s food culture which is exciting indeed as it means more visits in the future! You are right- the quality of food is so high that it is hard to pinpoint a particular stall or restaurant as the best when it comes to many foods. Hope you enjoy the content we have coming up on the channel. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. 😄 Cheers, Sheena

Well, Old Airport Road is super touristy but that's OK. "Touristy" food destinations are quite often a must visit but it takes research. - Tsukiji outer market (Tokyo) - eat everything - Campo dé Fiori (Rome) - eat everything - Katz's Delicatessen (NYC) - go early, share a sandwich - Fisherman's Wharf (San Francisco) - 50/50 do your research - Rue des Bouchers (Brussels) - walk, look, do NOT be tempted, leave - Váci Utca (Budapest) - walk, look, run away immediately With research (which I love) I don't shy away from lots of "touristy" places. 😀

The Lo Mee is similar to sichuan style braise noodles. It's the same exact Laksa I had in Last November when I was there and they used Lai Fun for the noodles. Thomas had curry puffs in some of the video in Malaysia. The Chee Cheong Fun he had usually used in Dim Sum dishes except without those chilli on the side. Wish they did or will do some food video in Hong Kong because the Chee Cheong Fun over there don't include shrimps, pork, or any protein in it except they served with 4 to 5 different kinds of sauces and top with springle sesame.
@ChasingaPlate4 жыл бұрын
We have a short HK series 😄 My parents are from HK so we eat a lot of Cantonese food. Chee Cheong Fun traditionally includes either shrimps or bbq pork if it’s of the steamed variety. The pan fried ones which have dried shrimp and spring onion rolled through it comes with the sauces on the top. Cheers, Sheena

I'm surprised you guys managed to find the laksa place because its really in the residential heartlands of Singapore and its a spot where mainly locals go to, in fact that place is just a 10 minute walk from my house. You can choose to customise your laksa noodles, personally I prefer the thin rice vermicelli in laksa for its ability to soak up more of that delicious broth rather than the thick rice vermicelli shown in the video. You can also choose to have a mix (yellow noodles + rice vermicelli is a classic). The Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee stall at old airport road is also legendary amongst Singaporeans, it's really really famous - that said I find prices at the Old Airport Road to be a little steep since it caters to more tourists though it is indeed a spot where locals go to for good food as well.

I really love the Singapore food centres and whenever I travel to Asia from Darwin there is always a stopover there. The flight from Darwin to Singapore arrives in Singapore at 9:05 am and I always miss a couple of connecting onward flights to give myself a 6-10hr window to get in a few feeds before my onward flight. Old Airport Road is one of my favorites with such a variety of food and drinks. My last visit was in April and this time I was determined to get a Biryani, the recommended favorite in most reviews is Selera Rasa but I have learnt that you should choose with your eyes as I often find a better version then the KZbin recommendations if you look around and try a few of the same dish. (even yours lol no offence) I guess we all have different tastes too. I chose to eat at "Mamas Recipe Biryani Rice" and I was definitely not disappointed with the Lamb Biryani it was absolutely delicious and I got a piece of their fried chicken on top too which was amazing. You should give it a try on your next visit..... Give "Roast Paradise" a go too.... I have favorites at many of the food centres including Golden Mile, Chinatown, Maxwell, Telok Ayer and others. There are so many to explore and it is so cheap for such an expensive country. mmmmm cheap beer....
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
That biryani sounds brilliant OBIE! You’re so right- it’s super important to eat with your senses! It’s why we always try to stay in places a bit longer so we have the opportunity to just wander and eat what and where looks good rather than just having a list to tick off. Not always possible but super important to do! Singapore has such a great food scene- we always enjoy our visits too! Thanks for watching and commenting mate, hope you enjoyed this series 😄 Cheers, Sheena

The biggest hawker centre is in Chinatown. And curry puffs are filled with chicken, never pork!
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry Tay. Thanks for watching. We hope you enjoyed the video. Are you talking about the main hawker centre in Chinatown? Is that classed biggest by the number of stalls? We've never had much impressive food there so don't visit often. Do you have any favourite places to eat there? Re the curry puff yep we talked about that in the video. Once again thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀

@@ChasingaPlate The claypot chicken is presumably the best in Spore. So is their roast chicken rice, HK style, now awarded a Michelen star. There is also a very famous Cantonese store selling popular a la carte dishes.

Hi Terry Tay, we've eaten the HK style roast chicken rice before and thought it was tasty but pretty ordinary- wouldn't rush back. But we'll have to check out the Cantonese stall next time we're in town- thanks for that tip! 😀

Lor mee is addictive :) The gloopy sweet sauce, refreshing and light chicken breast, and the alkaline noodles are just epic. Laksa is small but looks so concentrated in flavour. Small portions make you appreciate the food more and makes you want to order a variety of dishes to eat at once. As for the curry puffs, black pepper is quite a new flavour. The traditional flavours are chicken curry and sardine :) I know that the mainstream chinese, malay and indian food are ubiquitous around the island, but I encourage you to try peranakan food, especially the dish called buah keluak. Peranakan food is actually home-cooked food by the peranakan people (a very important group of people in the history of this nation) and it's only in the last few decades that restaurants specialising in nyonya food have been springing up across the island. It is obviously going to be a bit more pricey because such food is not commonplace and mostly prepared at home. One example of peranakan food is the curry laksa you just ate, but most of the other dishes are not as widely available.
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Omg the next time we visit I’m going to eat many more bowls of lor mee. That’s the problem with Singapore- there’s too much to eat and not enough time. They’d just run out of chicken curry at the stall so we had to go off piste- which I’m glad about as we always go traditional so it was nice being forced to try a new filling 😄 Peranakan dishes are definitely ones we need to explore more when we are next in Singapore- I wonder if there are any hawker stalls? Will have to look into it! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one A O 😄 Cheers, Sheena
@AO-iv6yr5 жыл бұрын
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Yes, we are spoilt for choice. No, no such thing as a peranakan hawker stall, only peranakan restaurants. I wrote a reply to one of your patreon posts and in it I recommended one such restaurant to try. You might have missed my reply, as I didn't get a reply from you: www.patreon.com/posts/flights-are-25770668?cid=21378512 To my knowledge, there are several types of cuisines or eating styles in Singapore that you can't get from the hawker centre, meaning you can only find them in a restaurant: high-class chinese food (eg pricey seafood, roast suckling pig - all very tedious to prepare and cost you a bomb), zi-char (affordable family meal of stir-fried chinese dishes which you don't really associate with or find in hawker centres, sometimes such restauranst can also prepare things like chilli crab - you don't normally see things seafood dishes like chilli crab at the hawker centre and this is still different from the 'high-class chinese food' I just mentioned), south Indian banana leaf (some hawker centres might have this, I'm not sure, but the authentic experience almost always comes from a restaurant setting). And then there are those famous, age-old restaurants (not hawker stalls) that specialise in only one or a few dishes eg bak kut teh, porridge + side dishes, Singapore-style beef noodles. Cheap and good hawker food is definitely an attraction, yet all these that I have mentioned are also 'mandatory' towards a typical Singaporean's diet - almost every Singaporean would have eaten all of the above at least once. So lots to explore! :D
