15 months with the Cannon X and 15k on the clock. It’s done the Flinders Rangers on L8-L9 tracks, towed a 2.5t caravan and is a city commuter. No issues with rusting or quality. Unlike previous GWM vehicles, this Ute has reputable parts from ZF, Borg Warner and Bosch. I don’t think anyone will say it’s a Ranger or Hilux but to be honest, who pushes their vehicles to that extreme. With 3t towing, 300kg ball weight, 1050kg in the tray, the only Ute to have a tailgate step, 7yr warranty and for $41k it’s fantastic.

@@brianward2313 the Steed 6 was (is) the previous model of the Ute and still selling off existing stock around the world. Interesting review. I'm in the market again for a new ute and I'm seriously considering the GWM. I had from new an RX NP300 for 5 years and did 500k. The reason I bought the RX single turbo was because I couldn't hack the delay when accelerating. The RX had no delay and felt like a petrol off the line so I installed the wheels, chrome bars on the rear and nudge bar. The point being, this model produced 120Kw of power with 400Nm of torque. Never was an issue and I suspect same with GWM. I used to tow cars on trailer just over 2 tonne. No issues. Only complaint was that despite the average fuel of under 8 litres per 100, when it towed it really sucked the diesel. Was very poor on the economy under towing conditions. But other than that, it had plenty of power for me so I suspect the GWM is just fine. If you're a V6 diesel punter then you'll never be satisfied with the GWM. But from what I'm reading, the GWM is hard to pass up if you have a limited budget.

I have a '13 x200 w 5 speed auto, probably the same origin engine, the a 1t boat & trailer fine with it. Like he said the trans jumps into hi gears too early so often drive it in manual mode. With a heavier boot it might act better but not w these diesel prices. Economy is good w 8.5 - 9 on highway, 12 with the boat. Ill put a decent trans cooler w fan on mine as no low range so torque conveter will work when crawling around. Lots of electronics, and it will go to limp mode/ electronically accelerate. Disconnectedly in gear due to small things like water in fuel sensor. Toyota's won't stop for this, the newer GW may be more durable. Rev it, drop into gear & once rolling it will drive. Al in all got good bones, some drawbacks & quirks but cheap

All that time and distance and you missed a few things TBH. The Hilux air box is notorious for letting dust in did anyone bother to check, did we look at the other two? Alternators have been gradually sinking in engine bays which has implications for water crossings and driving in muddy conditions how do these compare? How easy is to to change a fuel filter and reset the light should you get a bad lot of fuel or for that matter bleed up the system should you run it dry? What are the stock tyre sizes, profiles and availability of off road tyres in these sizes i.e. wander into the tyre shop at somewhere broken hill and see what they carry in stock. Having run a few vehicles in mineral exploration these are some of the areas a modern 4wd tend to fall over in.

You could use that $20,000 saving to get a dyno tune to increase the power, upgrade the suspension and you’d have a duel cab that would possibly be on par with the Hilux in terms of its power and handling. And still have change from the $20,000!

The new vehicle tests are nice, but not a real world comparison. Get the 3 vehicles 3 years down the road with all having done the same milage in the same type of environment, being used as a ute then test them against each other then. Toyota and Isuzu have been around for years and they have been developing their products for years. I'd take the Japanese contenders over the Chinese one until they prove themselves. I live in South Africa and if you talk utes here the Luxie is the benchmark. I agree that Toyota is too expensive for what you get but the market determines the price.

The Isuzu & Toyota have been around for decades for a very good reason, even though they are going at a steep price bracket lately. I have a 10 year old Mitsubishi Challenger and I've recently had to take it to panel beaters for rust repairs on the roof and under bumpers at the front end. Going mainstream Japanese is not always a guarantee you won't ever get problems, you just pay more. If you have saved a good 20k from the start and put that into your mortgage, at a modest 5% interest compounded over 10 years, that sum equates to $32.5k. So even if you get problems in 10 years time, I reckon you'll still be much better off.

What fiddly systems for the air conditioning? You turn the left knob to lower the temperature and the right knob to raise the fan speed. There is a mode button to switch vents but do you need to change that all the time? Also, would you go driving in the outback without applying proper window tinting to help repel the heat? Lane Keep Assist is annoying and I wish there was a single button to disable it (especially when towing!). It's a shame reviewers aren't briefed on 4H which is called Cross Country Expert mode. It's not even in the manual but owners discover it via FB groups and love it!
@chriswording8638
@chriswording8638 2 жыл бұрын
Precisely, I was about to say the same. AC access is immediate, no menu to go through, you have button access. Takes two seconds to adjust anything. Lane keep assist only works if the car can clearly detect the two white lines (boundaries) of the road, which is hardly present on dirt roads. Which means it isn't active. When you go off-road, you adjust your tyre pressure and slow down. Looking at the video, hitting corrugations at 100 kmh with probably tyres set to 34 psi, of course the front will bounce around and eventually you'll cause damage to any car. You need to set the tyre pressure to 32 front and 30 psi rear when empty. Lastly I wish people would test cars if they owned it, not with the rental car mentality (we trash it, who cares, it isn't ours). I certainly don't drive my Cannon (nor any other car like a Hoon) and drive it to conditions, not like pedal to the metal.

In regard to the complaint re the GWM lack of torque, my now 14 year old PK Supercab Ranger has a sweet Mazda 3 liter diesel with just 380 nm and it has pulled a camper trailer and a 19 foot tandem caravan all over this country and mostly not the coastal routes, the Gibb, Streslecki, Oodnadatta, Boroloola to the South Western corner of WA, and that 380 nm does the job just fine, it just does it just fine, IMHO the breadth of torque is more important and driving to conditions. I am considering a new ute soon and I have looked at GWM, LDV and my preference may be a Sassong Musso ELX with optional suspension mods ie as with my old Ranger 2 inch lift, excellent KYB Scorcher shocks, Dynapro ATM's. And the Musso in that form only has 420 nm but a broad torque band and the same sweet Aisan 6 speed as in the Mazda/Isuzu and Hilux. I would like to see a similar test with the superbly assembled Musso, 7 year warranty and ( I think roadside assist) knowing that a fraction of the $20 - 25,000 saved on a Hilux or Ranger will allow a considerable amount of good aftermarket accessories, bar, canopy, lights. Toyota, Ford, Isuzu etc need to sharpen up their pricing, just look at the cost of the same vehicles in Thailand to see the big profit the Makers are touching the Australian buyers up with! As for reliability, Toyota have certainly had their problems, injectors, Cats, , Ford, no cooling on ZF autos and continual activation of limp mode towing in heat, failed dual mass clutches in earlier models, a fair share of low mileage 3.2 engine failures and turbos. Navaras, repeated rear main seal failures, and the list goes on. The Chinese manufacturers are here and improving a good product rapidly, some just have issues as many in the 60's did with what then was termed "Jap crap" until it was realised a Landcruiser was superior to a 22 or 2a Landrover and whats more didn't break axles every 5 minutes when snatching second gear with a load on the back, ask me how I know? History will repeat! Just my take!

So basically… you still get what you pay for. I was curious about the gwm (& haval), but it seems they are cheaper for a reason. Good cars, but not great cars. All still damn expensive though!

It's a good thing to have a entry level car on the market to keep the likes of Toyota and Ford honest with their prices. I think charging more than $60k and $70k for a car is ridiculous.

If you press the temp ie 23 it will open up the ac screen … why do you not film yourselves going over the rough as you did in the GWM and made such a grunt going over in the other two? Bias? Hmm

One thing I can say about gwm as a panel beater, is the are awful for getting parts. 6 plus months wait on any panels. Toyota you can still get brand new factory billboard for 1995 model Hilux. Something to consider if you buying a new car is how will you own it and expect to be able to get parts

$70K is ridiculous price just saying... Made in China has come a long way and continues to improve rapidly... Perfect is the enemy of good enough. OTOH...that front grill of the GWM, looks like a giant eyeball 😄 Was slightly disappointed, thought you were really going to put those buggers through the terrain, have them roll over some rocks.

I'm thinking about buying one of these to tow my mowing trailer for my business. Would you recommend 4x2 or 4x4?

Unless you're planning on heavy off roading 4×2 is perfectly fine
