Having sailed that route multiple times as a yacht delivery skipper it's interesting to see how people deal with it in the early stages of their sailing experience.. You were lucky with the weather, or more likely you had better access to forecasts than I had all those years ago, plus the luxury of choosing when you leave.. not always the case when doing it for a living ! I was a bit puzzled as to why with the calm winds and seas being experienced you didn't simply just get over the side with a decent knife and cut away the netting. Picking up nets is a common enough experience.. For anyone contemplating the same trip I can recommend El Ferrol as a destination rather than Corruna.. :>)

I'm sorry guys to be negative, I'm stoked you two are out there and giving it a go but i feel this was a little over the top and you two need to be more self-sufficient. These 'Disaster' where quite easily fixable, plus you are sailors!! If the wind dies out just wait it out, especially if you are in no danger of land or rocks, plus no wind =no waves (jump in and fix the prop) you can't expect to put others in danger because it's easier for you. That said, keep going, keep learning. Sailing is all about learning.

Thanks for the comment Mike, we agree in part. The wind wasn't going to pick back up for 2 days so we couldn't have sailed without clearing the prop. In that moment we were in real danger of being hit by shipping vessels. Our electronics off due to orcas, unable to move from other ships paths, nobody answering their radios, fog so they likely wouldn't have seen us. Our plan was to clear the prop when conditions calmed (we were not willing to risk it in the 2m swells prior to this due to very likely risk of injury or worse). Unfortunately the sea calmed at the same time as orcas. In that moment it all came down to we didn't want to get hit by the multiple collision courses, and felt it very likely that we'd be without steerage too due to the orcas (quite common in that spot). We agree that there are likely things we could've done differently, but if you've watched our other videos (or followed us on social media) you'd know we are definitely the type of people to have a go at sorting things out ourselves, and don't scare easily (we've sailed across Biscay with barely no experience). This instance we put our safety and boat safety first in a situation where we thought we were going to get hit or lose a rudder. The only thing we think we could've done is waited out the orca attack and then waited til morning to jump in. But hindsights a wonderful thing! Appreciate your views and thanks for watching 👍

@@Dave-pf7yc the seas weren't light at any point. Anyone whose tried to film sea states whilst sailing can tell you it doesn't show what it's like. We had consistent 2m waves for the whole time we had the net on. A lot of seasoned sailors will confirm that you risk head injury by attempting to go below in those conditions. We did clear as much as we could from the cockpit 👍

I wholeheartedly agree Ben. It's so nice to identify with the nationality and accent of our favourite KZbin stars (did you like the 'stars' bit Jade & Bryn!!? Well you'll have to get used to it, like such figures as Barry 'Old Seadog' Perrin, Sam Holmes et al). It's nearly always Americans or Canadians who have such rapid adaptability to new culture and technology. Did you know they came up with colour telly only 12 years after black and white was invented? These lovely people are totally warm, generous, cheerful souls, but there is a strange disparity that we just cannot get past, entirely because the accent and lifestyles of the North American KZbin star are so different from our own. There seems to be much more money in the North American way of life, and we Britons have a hell of a lot less and so struggle to identify, like Leonardo DeCaprio's Jack, so bewildered at a formal Titanic dinner in the eponymous film, sorry, 'movie'. We hear terms like girlfriend, which doesn't imply a romantic coupling, and "Let's take a ride to pick up some soda" which leaves us wondering if this is going to be a horse and cart journey to lift up some boxes of washing soda, perhaps making the containers safer from damp. Like children we hear "flea market" and "Freshman" and "Directionals" and "Sorority" and "Semester" but have no clue what they're talking about, ha ha! I spent a couple of years in the late eighties 'Living With Uncle Sam' as a roofing foreman in The Bronx, my favourite man-made place on earth, and seeing bus advertisements and Times Square billboards asking "What's Vanna Wearing Tonite?" or declaring that 'Nobody Beats The Wizz' , or traffic signs saying Snow Emergency Route (pronounced rout, not root) and despite that I'm aware much of the American terminology is totally alien to us. I know that our US cousins feel as suddenly disconnected when, upon arriving in the UK for the first time, Brits say "bollocks" or "Christmas crackers" or "fizzy pop" or "petrol" or over-use of "sorry", or driving the 'wrong' way around a 'roundabout'. I've witnessed so many Americans being over here and feeling absolutely cut adrift from reality (as though their prop was tangled!), their confidence shattered by unexpected culture shock, their outgoing nature having gone out. There's something very endearing about it. Perhaps that culture shock may descend like a blanket of fog when getting into rounds in a pub or being asked to queue for dinner when a queue means 'standing in line' and 'dinner' is an evening meal, not a lunchtime one as it often is here in the UK. I've seen Americans enter an English pub, sit at a table and after 20 minutes get impatient about when the waitress is coming, and not one bloody Englishman bothering to explain it to them as they are enjoying the floor show created by it, ha ha. It's even worse for French-speaking Quebecois Canadians, to whom a 'queue' is a tail or a slang word for penis. Oh how our English-speaking nations are divided by our common language!

We are trained self rescue might be your only option for survival I would say learing the skills nessery to carry this out would be a smart idea. Learing from this invest in protection for your head if your concerned about getting knocked out under the boat. Also can invest in line cutters to reduce the risk of injuries from the knife. Train to carry out this task in different conditions untill your are compant to do it for real as items caugth in the propeller are common.

Well done for getting there, safety first. Swimming under a yacht in a swell is dangerous as you say and I know this from experience. Good the Orcas didn’t do any lasting damage but you had a succession of issues so making the PanPan in good time was a good move. This is why we treasure the RNLI. They wouldn’t be looking for anything other than a big thank you and a donation. Take care and look forward to next time. Andy UK

I clearly remember arriving in La Corunna on 26 July 2007 after our first Biscay crossing, we had force 9 winds and massive swells for the last twelve hours of our crossing so by the time we arrived we were knackered and recovering from being rather worried that something on the boat would break. I think that the reality is that it is a significant test and a proper milestone in becoming long distance sailors. You have clearly learnt an enormous amount from the experience and will be able to look back at the events with the wisdom that you have subsequently aquired.

We're both comfortable free diving, the issue was large waves in the Atlantic could've knocked us out/broken our neck if under the boat (we've read of this happening) so we chose to wait for a calmer period. Unfortunately the calm period came at the same time as the Orcas and again, we didn't want to risk losing our rudder through an Orca attack which is getting very common in that area.

First time I have came across your blog great stuff and admire your spirit. The Orca are a real pain in the arse dare I say dont rule out another attack. Great boat I nearly bought one great headroom to. We got as far as south Brittany and winter there with the plan to get to head to Portugal this year. Covid and Orca's but our plans off until next year. Keep smiling your doing great.

Yep the headroom definitely won us over. Hopefully we'll see you about next year somewhere 😊 thanks again, and stay safe 👍

@@ChasingCurrents A great place to winter is up the Guardiano river the border between Spain and Portugal. I have never been there but that's were we were headed. I know a lot of people that have spent time there. One of them has bought a price of land down there and put a couple if his own moorings in. I know i'm a bit behind the times here , but i would like to ask a question . This Orca that visited you , as many have said it happens quite regularly now , and many are confused as to why ! . What i would like to ask is , do you leave the echosounder/sonar on , when offshore , and did it happen to be on this occasion . I ask this question because many years ago , there were a number of incidents where small craft , were regularly colliding with sleeping whales . A couple even sank , and one led to the publication of a book , and i think even a film . The advice given at the time , was to leave the echo sounder on . The theory was that , the acoustic signal they emitted , was on a frequency that whales could hear . Echo sounders have moved on a lot over the years . They have gone from the simple up and down depth warning devices , to the sophisticated mapping systems they are today , using a method similar to fish finders . I would guess this would need a different frequency and i wonder if this pod of whales , who are known to be intelligent , have figured this out . Maybe i'm giving them more credit than they deserve , but one theory is they are attacking the boats , as they are seen to be competing for food .

I lived through every minute of your video. I used to listen to the 'real sailor adventurers' in Falmouth bars - I was approaching 60 and had to do a double Biscay to prove a point to myself. I set off from Falmouth full of fear and trepidation not knowing what was ahead of me. I can just imagine how you guys felt. I was a reasonably competent sailor, but one thing I did know was that no amount of training or theory could cover every eventuality. All the 'high achievers' I know could have 'done better' or 'done differently' at the a time of crisis. You did what you thought was right at the time - you put nobody in danger! Like you, about 10 miles from La Coruna I picked up debris on my prop. I hadn't the guts to go overboard. The coastguard refused to help me, but fortunately a Brit in La Coruna with a big power boat picked up my VHF message and towed me in. Doing that Biscay was one of the best thing I've ever done. I met so many fabulous, interesting people from all walks of like with differing levels of experience, attitude, confidence and skills. Peoples mindset and courage differs and we need to recognise that.

Thanks so much for your comment, really appreciate the way you've put it! I think the big thing for us was we'd never even left the Solent and our longest sail was Southsea, to Cowes. We then decided to just have a go and went in one stint from Southsea to Falmouth, then Falmouth to A coruna. We could've waited until we gained more experience, but as you said it still doesn't prepare you for every eventuality. In our minds we think we've achieved something that nobody thought we'd be able to, especially on a 28ft boat with two absolutely sailing newbs 😅 it is sometimes hard to hear all of the things that we've 'done wrong' but we have the outcome we wanted, and us and boat are both safe. We'll never know if it was the right choice, would the orcas have broken our rudder if the rescue vessell didn't arrive? Would we have sustained injuries going under the boat to clear the prop in 2m swells? There's no way of knowing. But we do know that we made it, and it's possible for anybody to do if you are willing to take all of the naysayers and the fear of the unknown and just go on blind faith that you'll figure it all out as you go! We're now sat here in sunny Portugal thinking of how much energy and work we've put into getting here, and just so grateful that we didn't listen to anybody telling us no and went with our hearts. Wow that was so lucky there was a Brit there to tow you! Nobody was answering our VHF calls though plenty of ships around. We were trying to call ships on collision courses with us and got no replies. Only channel 16 answered unfortunately! We've only just begun our adventures after Biscay, but can definitely see that we're going to agree with you! Already met some incredible people and saw some beautiful cities that we'd likely never have seen otherwise. Thanks again watching the video and commenting, all our best - Jade & Brynn

@@ChasingCurrents Hi - strangely, about 2 months after returning to Falmouth and sailing off the Lizard, I picked up a lobster pot, rope, ball etc. I took a different view this time and decided to divert/sail to the nearest reasonably protected cove a few miles away. The boats sailing performance was marginally compromised, but she sailed well enough. There, I went over the side in 3 or 4 metres of nice clear water over white sand and cut it free. Vastly different to the dark, threatening depths of Biscay. In retrospect, I should have waited off La Coruna until the wind picked up, allowing me to sail to the outlying coast of La Coruna to take a dip!! Hindsight's a wonderful thing. When we first start sailing we become too reliant on our motor, tending to think it's a 'get out of jail' thing. However, as we get more experienced we get more confidence in our ability to sail out of trouble. I envy you - in 'letting go your lines' you made the best decision ever. I'm 80 this month and have decided to put my boat up for sale. I've put it on at a price I'm unlikely to get, perhaps secretly hoping that I'm stuck with her! She's 'Tulip', a Contest 31 on Yatchsnet.co.uk website. I look at you two now and think - what if I ????

May I suggest putting an outboard mounting on your transom so when you need to get in an out of a marina your 5hp outboard will get you there. I'm about to do that on a 30ft boat I'm renovating. Very interesting video and no doubt the best way to learn is the hard way (and on your pocket). A mayday is for when there is a clear threat to your life from my understanding. This would in my mind be when you have been in a collision and sinking etc. Yes it would have been inconvenient and scary to have hoved to or drifted in the calm winds forecast keeping visual lookout with handheld VHF at the ready for shipping, but that is a hazard of the occupation. I saw no risk to life. Lesson learned, good stories to tell etc still.
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely a lot was learned from this, and agree a Mayday likely wasn't the right course of action - though the scary part was also that the ships weren't answering the radio which did concern us. We were actually standing with the air horn ready. We agree in hindsight there was no risk to life, however in the moment with the orcas spinning us, us disorientated, ships not answering the radio, our electronics off due to the orcas so likely ships wouldn't have seen us in the fog - it was enough for us to decide to get out of the situation before it got worse. Likely the pan pan would've been sufficient, and think there are parts We'd do differently if it were to happen again. Thanks for the comment!

@@epcode5121 Mayday is an emergency call when life is in danger, this was no mayday.Help from a wealthy subscriber, why, if you want to sail around the world you need finances in place before hand, boats are cheap to buy, the expense comes after. All part of the learning curve which is steep.
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 жыл бұрын
There were lessons learned. We called a pan pan, and were told to call again for help if we were in danger (there was a rescue vessel in the area, however wasn't coming to us as an urgency - only if we ran into trouble) We were unable to use our prop, there were a lot of cargo ships on collision courses with us, a number of them not answering the radio nor adjusting courses. Perhaps a Mayday wasn't the right route, but general calls to the coastguard weren't being acknowledged and we were scared that we may end up on a collision course. We do have AIS so probably theres a good chance they would have seen us, but we were scared to take the risk. It probably wasn't the right route and we don't claim to have done everything right, this is how we acted in the situation, and us and boat are all safe and nobody was harmed. As I said lessons learned, and I'm sure if it happened again we'd feel more confident in what to do
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 жыл бұрын
You are partially right, and partially I'd disagree. Not everyone has enough finances to sail around the world, yet have the ability to make money as they travel - there's plenty of stories of shoe string cruisers. We've said in previous videos that we don't have a lot of money, if we couldn't finance our travels or pick up work as we go, we'd work over the winter months back in England. We don't ask people to fund our adventures, we work hard to make these videos and the fact that people want to give a little is extremely generous and appreciated. It's an extremely steep learning curve for sure, but lack of finances is never going to stop us doing it - we've found a way out of worse scrapes.

Thank you for sharing - Impressive how you handle this situation. Must have been scary. 1500 € is a slap but as I understood your boat&rudder is OK. Regards Sweden Trintella 29/Jan S

Thanks so much for your comment! Yeah it definitely was scary, but thankfully there was no damage so all was well in the end. The main thing is that us and the boat are safe 🙂Sending our love to beautiful Sweden 👋

I'm sure the Orca's were trying to take the net off the prop for you.... I was wondering why you didn't jump in and try to unfoul the prop and then you mentioned the Orcas and I fully understand why you did not offer yourselves up for a banquet. André in Sydney

You never know! Yeah basically, we couldn't get the net off the prop during the evening as we had 2m Atlantic swells which would've been very dangerous to get under the boat in. We were waiting for a calm patch which unfortunately came at exactly the same time as the orcas, the dark, and the fog 😂 thanks for watching Andre, all our best Jade & Brynn

Hi Guys, hope you and any rudderless sailors find this of use. A line run from one winch aft to another winch aft, around the stern, outside of the backstay and everything. In the middle of that line you tied a loop prior to deploying it in order to create a bridle. From that loop in the middle you have tied several dock lines which will trail. These are your warps, and if you want to further reduce speed more warps, you can also tie overhand knots every couple of feet in the warps. With the original bridle mounted on winches, you can now adjust the position of the loop (and trailing warps) behind your boat. That will steer your boat or slow it down in heavy weather conditions. :)

This is brilliant thank you! We have a similar back up plan using buckets but its super handy to know Dock lines will have the same effect 😁. We also have some large stainless bolts we can use to manufacture a back up rudder.. we hope we never have to be in this situation fingers crossed 🤞. Thank you for your comment and hopefully it will also help other sailors 😁

Probably a dumb qiestion but, when the wind went to zero, why didnt get in the water and cut the net off? Would have taken just a couple of minutes, no? Im no sailor so aplogies if im missing something obvious.

Hey, no such thing as a dumb question. Unfortunately, when the wind died, it was pitch black and foggy. It would have been super difficult and dangerous to get in the water, not seeing waves or what was around. From when the wind died to when the orcas came wasn't that long, and if I was in the water, it could have been a different story 😅. Essentially, if it feels too much of a risk, we were happier to take the safer option 👍. Thanks for the comment

Greetings from a fellow (sea)I sailor. Good call and I will be following your channel ;) true emotions and sincere people. I wish you all the best. Good to hear those Orcas didnt bash the rudder that much so it was damaged (or even worse puncture a hole in the boat, as probably the most non-sailors watching this video dont realise is that the rudder is mounted through a hull-through (!) mechanisme to the steering cables.

Thanks so much for commenting, appreciate your kind words 😀 Yes, we've spoken to quite a few sailors now around here with significant rudder damage - so we're extremely grateful! Wish you all the best too, Jade & Brynn

Why didn’t you use your auxiliary outboard motor ?

Unfortunately there was no way for us to mount the outboard for it to reach the water. It's on our winter job list now though!

Some serious lessons learnt here. Self reliance and when and when NOT to call Mayday !
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely lessons learnt - hindsights a wonderful thing though! As we were on multiple collision courses and noone was responding on radio nor adjusting their courses, and didn't seem to be responding to air horns - plus we'd already spoken to channel 16 who said to call immediately if help was needed (but were not answering further pan pans), Mayday was what we felt would keep us safest. Plenty of lessons learnt of course, but that was our logic in the moment.

PS. Forgot to mention something potentially useful. 12 volt solid state cool boxes. They don't get massively cold, as it depends on the ambient air temperature, but they are very good and very cheap. You could drop the air temperature around them, by putting one in an evaporative cooler, such as a Plastic Box wrapped in micro fiber towels, where it is windy, and keeping the towels wet. I think I bought mine from Halfords for about 30 Quid. Or ! your Bilges are a lot cooler, and you may be able to fit one in. 👍 Bob. eta fixed typos.

A solid state cooler will use 3 - 4 times the energy than a compressor cooler. They are much more expensive, but certainly worth it as energy is always sparse on boats.

I guess it's a good thing you had the cash, I'm betting if you did not that they would have seized your boat. Maybe look at a go fund me like Zingaro did. I had a 4hp Honda 4 stroke outboard on a bracket as the main engine on my 27ft after Lisbon and on to the Caribbean after the 9hp inboard self destructed. I found that a bread knife works well on line wrapped around the prop. used it several times to good effect. Recently, in preparation for my, hopefully forthcoming new voyage, I put together a 12v hooka system for working underwater on the boat and acquired SCUBA gear in case I get anchoring problems, like having to dump the anchor in an emergency and then recover. End of the day I'm betting today you are feeling much better and from what you say you were going to have to pull in some more cash at some point anyway. Best wishes from UK.
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 жыл бұрын
Yep just about had the cash thankfully! We got the feeling they'd have seized the boat for sure. Ah not sure we'd feel comfortable doing a go fund me, especially as it's essentially our fault for going without insurance and calling for rescue 😅 thanks though for the suggestion 😊. Wow that's interesting to know. We don't have a bracket for ours to use an engine, didn't think it would be able to move our boat. We're definitely looking into some form of bracket incase it happens again in the future though. We did try the bread knife from on the boat but it couldn't quite reach underneath the boat on the boat hook. We were waiting for calm sea state so we could freedive and clear the prop, unfortunately that time only came at 3am in fog and with orcas 😅 we're both quite confident freedivers, but still a hooka would be awesome - very useful to have. Yep exactly, we knew our budget was likely to get blown very quickly as things often go wrong on boats (we presumed boat work of some kind, turns out it was a fee for towing 😅) feeling much better now and just loving the adventure to be honest! Hoping you're voyage goes well 👍 all our best, Jade & Brynn

They are beautiful and so intelligent! We're going to be doing another video soon in more detail about the orca incidents as we got chance to speak to a researcher with Orca Iberica in A coruna. It was terrifying to experience in the dead of night, but now we're safe we actually feel lucky we got to see them haha. Thanks for commenting! 👍

Question: Could you have turned your engine on and let it idle (not in gear), to scare off the whales? (I have no idea I never been blue water sailing!) I am just trying to help, if that should happen again!

Hey, we did run our engine for short moments to charge our batteries while using our radio. Unfortunately, this didn't deter the orcas. Thanks for the question 😊
