Chassé means "to chase" and refers to the back leg that chases the front leg by closing to 5th position in the air.
To start, the front leg slides along the floor then bends to a plié in 4th position before the back pushes off the floor whilst closing to 5th. It is very similar to children's hoping only turned out and with pointed feet.
Chassé going back is much more difficult so try to master chassé forward first.

I hear that you are very nervous having to demonstrate this tomorrow. So please breath slowly and deeply and try to stay calm. The best thing that I can help you with is with this tutorial. Watch it, watch the slow-motion, then do it in your mind (mind-rehearsing), then practise physically. Repeat this process several times. If you need to revise the foot and arm positions, there are plenty of images and videos only. Type in 'ballet arm positions' and 'ballet foot positions'. I hope this helps somewhat. Best of luck tomorrow!

@@shierelynlaxamana1479 did you try to count the steps yourself? How many do you feel are there? You may have learned a different version in your class" plié 5th, brush to 4th, jump up in 5th, land in plié 5th. Whereas I demonstrate with a tendu front instead of a direct brushing into 4th position.

How would you know that in other schools this step may not be called chassé? Different schools often use different terminology. Just look at the example of the port de bras: the same arm position can be called 3rd or 5th. A battement tendu jeté can also be called dégagés or glissé, a saut de chat can be called grand pas de chat or flic jeté or jeté développé, etc. There is always more to learn.

Holistic Ballet i have an honest question! I’ve seen chasse, which means to slide, done before by sliding the foot from a tight 5th to through forth and THEN jumping, vs. what is shown in this video with a chasse starting in tendu. I’ve seen and done them, both versions, for different things. Have you knowledge of this other version i speak of and do you think it is valid? I think the are both relevant and good to know but I am conflicted on which version to start my students off with. Would you say one version is more technical or appropriate to teach beginners then another?! Thanks for your advice.

@@Misslilliano This is a very good point. As you say yourself, both versions exist. It is up to you which one you want to teach your students. Try both and see which works better. I assume the chassés from 5th through 4th will be much easier as the transition from tendu to plié 4th is the biggest struggle. I shall try the 5th/4th version next time I teach it, thank you for pointing this out. It's just that I do not like the look of it ;)

Thank you for responding! I appreciate your feedback! I totally agree with you that the “going-through-tendu” version has a nice quality to it, and you do it quite well! ;)
