Phil - Remove the extension. Since you have to remove that panel. I highly recommend notching a channel for the heating pipe. Do it right as it should have been done the first time. The other door can be repaired back to its original state. Neat and tidy = Peace of Mind.

If he removes the extension, he said he will only keep one set of doors. Removing a set of doors is a harsh difference to the original features of the chateau. If the extension is removed, the complete restoration of both sets of doors needs to be done. If having to choose between keeping two sets of doors or 6 inches of extension that will blend in to the paneling, keeping both sets of doors is more aesthetically pleasing.

i agree with Rob - remove the extension , cut a channel to bury the pipe , repair and reinstall both pairs of doors , patch the panel and paint . i don't understand why this is such a big deal . this is the master suite and this installation should be executed with longevity of originality in mind ... don't cobble it together

Phil, Remove the extension AND keep both sets of double doors. A complete restoration with a few holes to accomodate the pipe. Or could the pipe go under the floorboards? Maintaining both sets of double doors maintains the distinctive look of the era and is more aesthetically pleasing. Removing a set of doors is a harsh difference to the original features of the chateau.

Leave the extension. Cover the opening with wood. Once painted it will look and work fine. Move forward on your refresh of the master. Path of least resistance you can come back to it in 5-10 years when you refresh again. You have trees to cut, wallpaper to remove, walls to paint, lighting to find and other rooms to do.

That's what I'm thinking. Leave it and get on with removing that nasty vinyl & treat the moldy bits. AND deal with those blown down trees.

In addition, I think keeping both sets of doors is more of a historical feature than the extension. The extension will be barely noticable except to a historical architect. For most people, once the door is opened, we look to what is on the other side than at the woodwork.

Can you reroute pipe under floor boards? Or in ceiling below? Or make wider door frames on both sides and bring panels in making doorway slightly narrower but will hide pipe behind the extended paneled wall. You would have to trim entry doors to fit new space.
@soniagallaher3544Күн бұрын
Personally I would remove the extension and return to the original. You will have to remove the wallpaper anyway. Looks so much nicer.
@Lucid.Awakening2 күн бұрын
Can't you take the heating pipe down, and under the wooden flooring? Then that would allow both doors to remain intact (well, with one repaired, obvs.)
@thomasbubacz7402Күн бұрын
I was also wondering this option, even if the pipe shows in the ceiling below, molding resembling the original period of the building can conceal the pipe. Should have been done that way when the heating was added anyway.

@TomTomicMic2 күн бұрын
It might not have floorboards it most probably is solid stone, they should have cut a channel in the wall when fitting the pipes but a cut-out on the door will be the best solution now, the other door is already cut so just keep it the same!?!

Personally, I’d lose the extension. Saving the door but leaving the intrusion into the room would just annoy me continually. I’m less sure about what to do with the doors at that point, I suspect I’d leave them off and justify that (to myself) as part of the impact of changing two rooms into to a suite. But then I’d want to do the same with the paired set of doors on the other side of the room.

Hi Phil, Build it back to how it was. The first instinct is mostly right..... The wallpaper is absolut amazing. Try to recreate it somewhere and put it around the fireplace with that stunning mirror. This would be amazing with dark/ navy blue walls and that white and golden wooden frames. That vinyl wallpapapers are pur horror. I stripped our house as well.....there were papers on the wall from the 60 to the 80.... It was a never ending story of flowers and dust🙈.....so good luck and good night,K.

Hey Phil! That's some good work and very interesting about the extension ... ultimately, it's your decision, but, one option you could explore is whether or not you could put the heating pipe under the floor ... so, just exactly as it is, just pushed down lower! To me, it wouldn't look so neat sticking out like that, plus, dust and things can (& probably do) get stuck behind pipes. Basically, if there's a way to hide it, do so, but, if not, then just work around it.

@lizstevenson7801Күн бұрын
Two points I can see here. 1st two sets of doors may keep the heat in both rooms better in winter, but will probably be open during the day at least in summer. 2nd do you really need two sets of doors as it's your own personal suite and easier to only open one set if needed. Obviously you have to check behind the paneling to see if anything is amiss, personally I'd go for one set of doors and a small recess or alcove effect in the bedroom. 💕🇦🇺

Personally, I'd leave the doors into the ensuite, get rid of the extension and leave off the doors on the bedroom side. You only need one set of doors for privacy into the bathroom. The bedroom side would look like the walk-through hall ways in other parts of the house. Replace the paneling in the walk-through, and do whatever seems most useful with the heating pipe.

Well since you asked for advice…. I would get rid of the addition. Instead of cutting the door I’d remove the original foot panel and replace it with an altered one for the pipe for the time being. But put it aside incase someday you replace the radiators with an alternate heating. But it’s a question which would bother you most the door or the extension?

Hello Phil! I'm loving the uncluttered walkway bringing it back to its original function. My opinion is IF you can reroute the heating pipe to go under the floorboards, THEN it would be worth putting the doorframe flush to the wall and restoring the door that was cut so horribly. Phil. The wall above that extension from the camera angle, looks to be extended as well. Is that going to be a problem to remove the extension, like having to remove the whole wall?? Also, would it not be better to channel a little trough out of the stone at the bottom of that outside wall and put the plumbing into the trough. It would be a little more work but I think in the long run, it would clean up that space a lot more. For the pipe going up the wall, maybe some kind of decorative trim to cover it, make it look like a pillar or something! Make the “ old girl” a bit more grand! All the best 🎉🎉❤❤

Phil, remove the extention and put the door flush, it looks out of place as it currently is. Can you put the heating pipes in the floor? There will be no reason to cut the door.
