Such a great chat! I absolutely love Allen. And you too of course Jimmy. I’m currently reading Foundation right now, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I’ll be curious to see how the adaptation is handled. House of the Dragon! I can’t wait, and I need to read Fire & Blood. Allen, Six of Crows is actually really good, so don’t be worried. I’m still recovering from the “Phonebooth Guy” comment, but it’s ok, because I’ll forgive you if you watch the show. Well, you’re forgiven anyway, but ya know…😂😂

I took notes for this episode to make sure I didn't spam comments like I did on the last episode with Allen. In regards to you liking Foundation, which I love as well, I highly recommend The Culture series by Iain M Banks. I have read the first two. Consider Phlebas is great but The Player of Games is fantastic. You can jump right into The Player of Games without reading Consider Phlebas(i read Consider Phlebas over a decade ago and couldn't remember much from it when I read The Player of Games. I think you would like it. The look on Allen's face when you said Foundation was inspired by Rome now lives rent free in my head forever. Expanse is great but I dipped out toward the end of the series. I was not having a good time. The Caves of Steel which ties into the Robot series and Foundation series is a fun, short read. Since I'm in the future I know you have finished Dune and Malazan so here is a fun little fact. Steven Erikson wrote Gardens of the Moon in the same style as Dune and he said he did it because he didn't know you weren't supposed to write fantasy like that. I was not optimistic about the Wheel of Time show and i feel validated. I love the cast but the screenwriters/showrunner need new jobs. I knew Wheel of Time was going to be bad when Brandon Sanderson started talking about teaching himself to write screenplays shortly after season 1 started filming. That was a big red flag for me. The Stand is an amazing book. I'm glad both of you like it as well. Did you read the uncut version or the normal version? I enjoyed all the extras in the uncut version but I do understand why other people would prefer the shorter version. This was a great episode. I listened to this instead of the audiobook I'm working on so thanks to both of you I'm further behind 😤. (I have been listening to audiobooks for 16 years now and at this point I feel like I retain more from audiobooks than I do reading the books. I feel like it is a learned skill like reading faster.) Keep up the good work! 😎

One thing I gotta say. I think every book in Acts of Caine is great. But Stover does play around with style and structure and each installment is very different, but they fit together beautifully. The core themes and Hari's character are always respected. I think so much of the controversy stems from preconceived notions of what the next book should be and then Stover throws you a curve ball. But if you take a step back and reset your expectations I think you can see, that every decision he makes fits. Kind of like Steven Erikson does with Malazan but I'm also just a sucker for artistic boldness. As long as it feels true.

Yeah I've no interest in reading Kristoff either, thanks to Merphy Napier's glorious rant. I agree with the chat, you both should read Iain M Banks' The Culture, some of the best Sci-fi ever. Its my favourite Sci-Fi book series. Doctor Who is my favourite show of all-time, I don't think you would like it, but Smith was excellent. His first series is one of the best series of Doctor Who of all-time, of both classic and modern eras. Definitely one of my favourite Doctors. I initially liked GotM more but the more I read and thought about it I prefer Deadhouse Gates. You will love Memories of Ice. Halfway through Midnight Tides right now and Malazan is already a Top 10 favourite fantasy series for me. Tho I seem to be in the minority opinion that has Book 4 House of Chains as a favourite. Fun Fact: John Lithgow was Tim Burton's original choice for The Joker but Lithgow declined.

@@thefantasynuttwork Here's the thing. As much as i love the book, i totally get why Allen DNF'd it. It takes a fast paced and action packed book, doubles it in size, slows it down, strips out some of the sense of adventure and injects a metric duckton of metaphysical and philosophical themes. Plus i would go so far as to say that the overall mood is even more bleak and oppressing than Prince of Nothing. Oh, and like Allen said, there are some truly despicable and disgusting scenes in it (not just because they are graphic, but also because of the context). To sum it up, it is a hard sell and i totally understand people who just want to read book one and be done with the series.

Dune was actually written as a counter to Foundation. I did not care for Foundation nearly as much, maybecause I read it much later. For me, Asimov's spent a lot of time talking about the science and seemed dated. Dune does not suffer from this nearly as much as Herbert basically got rid of technology. Had to laugh at the swearing comment. My language will have to clean up a lot when we go back in the office as I am swearing like a freshman and often loudly.

No battle in the history of the world with more than a million combatants? Well, Allen really should take it easier and learn more about history, as there have been several, take e.g. Kursk with the Soviet Union at one point having about 2.5 million, and Germany around a million. These troops were, of course, not collected in a single place, and i take it that Allen means that. Also, I find it "interesting" that Allen criticizes e.g. 300 for not being historically accurate (which it absolutely isn't), and at the same time feeds his school kids straight up lies just to make things more interesting and the kids interested in history. That certainly is a good goal in itself, but if I played fast and loose with historical facts, I would be more conservative in my criticism of others.
