Had the chance to test drive both few weeks back, in my humble opinion apart from the similar price range the Scorpio is not in the same league as the Tank 300. The Tank is really a much more refined product both in terms of tech and driving capability (on & Off road). As a matter of fact, I do think it is a strong contester to the likes of Prado, Wrangler and the likes. (Speaking from an owner of Prodo for the last 6+ years)

I'd honestly choose the Scorpio cause I'm a old school guy. Not a fan of gimmicks in a car prefer when a car remains basic and does the job. I'm a Off-road freak and I've driven both cars. For me it's about the Feel when off-roading and I get that in the Mahindra it feels like I'm in control of the machine like trying to tame a wild bull I love that feeling. Unfortunately in the tank it felt like just another generic 4×4 with plush toys inside trying to overcome obstacles on the road. I love when my 4×4 has grunt to it honestly it makes the ride more fun for me. When I sat in the Mahindra and took it for a test drive it took me back to the day i brought my land cruiser home. Again just my opinion but the Scorpio feels more of a 4x4. For some reason I prefer the interior of the Scorpio to the Tank I find it mature and it gives off a very rugged and manly look. I mean there's got to be a reason why the Scorpio is a outback favourite right. Seen a lot on the beach too. 3 months with my Sand muncher (Scorpio) and it hasn't missed a beat.
@dune782410 күн бұрын
Tank has only a 400kg payload too. Unless you're solo travelling it's not really going to allow a family to carry all their gear for an outback adventure. The Mahindra isn't great in that regard either but at 530kg it's a significant improvement on the Tank. I totally agree regarding the assists on modern vehicles. I find they work against you. It's like having two people drive the car at once and one of them is a kindergartener. Pretty dangerous situation. The Mahindra is one of those rare vehicles which is still sold without training wheels attached and that makes it very appealing and nostalgic.

Just got back from a test drive of the Tank 300. It was quiet, smooth and had reasonable levels of power. You could not quibble about the quality of the interior and technology. I did not like the turbo lag, from a start you take off sedately then the power comes on at a rush. I intensly disliked the lane keeping steering, it would follow the centre of the road but at a bend it would suddenly twitch the steering wheel. The salesman told me a new model with a diesel option and less obtrusive steering is on the way. I actually loved a lot of things about the Tank 300 but when I got back into my petrol Kakadu, I felt back at home with no turbo lag and more power.

It has a 5 star ancap safety rating and decent braking distance. Back wheel jump for 0.01 seconds under extreme situation which the safety rating matters more under those circumstances.
@simonr23 Жыл бұрын
@@tacticalaccountantancap ratings are a bit of a rort/scam. having features on a spec sheet gives you stars. whether the features work is irrelevant to ancap. braking with wheels off the ground is terrible. the ".01 seconds" off the ground also means ther is a great deal more time where only .01% of the wheel is barely touching the ground. you brake hard and try to swerve around the reason for braking with your rear end only applying 100kgs of load to the tarmac and let me know how that went.
@53glowe Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. The 2 back wheels lifting completely off the ground under emergency braking is unbelievable in this day and age. If this was to happen on a corner or when swerving would mean complete loss of control or a possible roll-over. More computerised electrickery inside a Chinese-made car isn't a good thing, for me. My experiences to date with rentals has convinced me that budget car makers simply don't do a great job of the computerised stuff and, when that includes so-called 'autonomous safety systems', I just see problems waiting to happen. In this sense, the Mahindra, despite having fewer bells and whistles, appears to suffer similar problems, i.e. complaints about the hill hold and something else I can't recall. These issues, especially infotainment connection problems, seem to occur with some of the major manufacturers too, though much less common.

I am researching those off-road cars, and found similar complaints from Chinese forums. This is definitely a calibration issue, front suspension is soft and weight is not well balanced. Change a harder spring on front suspension would mitigate. It’s a pity cuz tank300 is the best small size off road I could find, but this issue really limits its handling ability.

One word : RELIABILITY. It's like comparing Toyotas to a Chinese car. Mahindras are much more reliable workhorse in the long run just like a Toyota. Also Mahindra is largest seller of tractors in the world! Cars and the famous 'Bolero' pickups are very popular as a reliable commercial workhorse products.

If you ask anyone who has done off roading or need to off road. The thing you are calling unrefined is actually a very important feature. Just like when most of the cars went the electric Power steering route everyone who is serious about driving was missing the confidence in the steering as you felt disconnected. If you are driving you need to know what all 4 wheels are doing …

Where is the originality n character in the Gwm tank? Whereas the Scorpio has an identity and character of its own with great off-road capabilities for a vehicle thats is meant for urban family use also. Scorpio combines the best of both urban SUVs n serious Offroaders with highly proven ruggedness and longevity which Chinese products simply can't match.

Engine noise - diesel will naturally be a little noisy than petrol and vibrate a little more. Having driven the mahindra i find the engine extremely sophisticated Off road- with 95% people keeping 4x4 for urban driving, does it really matter . Mahindra has the required capabilities of a 4x4 which 99% people will ever need !! Camera - ill give that to the GWM . Too many modes for 4x4 - i donno , whilst its a interestung gimmik, its also a perfect disaster waiting to happen ( thats why we go with keep it simple stupid motto ) Lastly all the gimmicks ( lane keep etc etc ) , people i feel are loosing the ability to drive and natural instincts that every driver should have

Dont go for gismos, just opt for korean, japanese, american , europen or even indian manufacturer vehicles. Chinese would make you cry in few years. Warranty alone will not help.
