Cheap Amazon Chinese diesel 168F teardown, reassemble and put to work.

I disassembled a Chinese diesel single cylinder i think its 2.2 kw or almost 3hp. i thought it was a 6 hp. the add was kind of weird. I took the engine apart found metal contaminants in oil from factory. Cleaned all the parts pulled the piston found scoring on the skirt and cylinder walls (not awful but bad for brand new) I decided they were caused buy the bad oil in the crankcase from factory running checks. I assume the oil is reused after each engine and not filtered at all down the assembly line. most bolts were found to be tightened properly except the muffler. put the engine back together and installed it on a grain auger i was using to feed my seed cleaner slowly. So far i have ran it for 40 hours and no issues. it does vibrate and have different harmonics than the gas and will chuck belts if at the wrong rpm but rev it up slightly and it smooths out. i ran 8.5 hours on 3L so i figured 150 hours and the fuel itself will pay for itself. i have not loaded this engine down hardly at all and am curious to see how much it can auger compared to the 16hp that was in its place.
good engine, bad assembly and run in factory. was it worth the 250 usd shipped? ya i believe so, almost for the simplicity of its design itself.

Break in oil changes are critical for small engines, because they usually don't have an oil filter. It's even more critical for diesel engines, because of the high compression, and accompanying high chamber pressure. If you buy a new engine, run it for ~1 hour, then again, after a tank full of fuel. You will see a lot of metal in the oil, as the crosshatch in your cylinder and rings bed in. While perfectly normal for a new engine, you don't want those metal particulates swimming around in there any longer than necessary. (It attacks the bearings and cam lobes and lifters) Those first oil changes are the difference between a 400 hour engine and a 4,000 hour engine! It's well worth spending an extra $10.00 on oil, to get a good break-in on a new small engine.

It drives me insane when I see the instructions tell you to do the first oil change at either 5 or 25 hours. OUCH! That's literally the same as putting a handful of metal filings in the oil and running it for 5 hours! It's a good idea to get a magnetic drain plug or other magnet before you ever start it - during break it it helps catch a large amount of the ring wear. Wish I could get one this small with an oil filter. :(

@@southtexasspecials175 I don't know about the diesel version, but for the gas engines you can get a magnetic drain plug for like $6 on Amazon. Wouldn't be surprised if this engine uses the same size threads. Also I've seen people take the stock drain plug and drill a 1/8" or so hole in it, not all the way through, and stick a cylindrical magnet in the hole with some epoxy. They also make magnetic dipsticks for the fill hole on the gas engines, but again not sure if it's the same threads.

Pretty much the same inside as the gas ones. They always come with *nasty* oil full of metal, I pour kerosene in the crankcase and shake it all around and dump it out if I'm not going to completely disassemble it. Then change the oil about every hour for the first 5 hours...they just keep making glitter. Eventually once everything wears in they work surprisingly well. Magnetic drain plugs are also really, really good to have in anything without an oil filter.

I also change the oil multiple times for the first few hours, but I do the first oil change after 10 minutes of hard break in. It comes out super shiny. I'd rather not run the initial break in oil for much longer, since it has the biggest metal shavings. I stop changing the oil after ever ride when it stops having shiny stuff in it. That crap will wear every moving part early if left in for long. If I could afford it, I would rev to max rpm then replace the oil every 20 seconds for the first 5 oil changes.

It almost looks like they did the initial break in already on the engine. If you do an engine tear down immediately after running a new engine, it will look like that from breaking in. That's why it is always so important to do the engine break-in procedures and rinse out the crank case after each oil change during the break-in process.

Watch the oil level breaking in. It's high. Cold weather? Ether can break it very easily. Use a kettle of hot water on the top of the cylinder slowly. I love my Sichuan Sifa MB168F. I made a 20 MM to 1 inch shaft adapter and added a 7 inch pulley. I won't idle it very low and I won't rev it high. 15W40 and real pump diesel. It cranks a car alternator. We use a lot of older equipment on our 2 farms (dairy and cattle/feed farms) mostly 1970~2000 New Holland/Case Inter implements, similar tractors with newer high power additions (John Deere, Kubota, older International). We tried to stick to OEM parts and avoid Chinese parts. Our experience with Chinese knock-offs (belts, chains, bearings, ...) has been at times disastrous and have occurred at the worst time (evening harvesting before a storm). You were fortunate to identify your impending engine failure "just in time". Thank you for sharing your experience with the farming community. May I suggest filming videos with a more stable camera - the constant motion including focus variations makes it hard for the viewer(s) to follow. The reason it had old cruddy oil in it, is because they "recycle"/reuse the same oil after testing the engines on the assembly line. So that oil has probably been run threw hundreds of those new engines. They drain all they can but no matter what some is left behind and by the time it makes it to your door it has all settled to the bottom. I'm also pretty sure they don't even filter the used oil they literally just poor out as much as they can then poor it into the next engine to test.

One of the biggest problems with cheap Chinese engines is that they make everything from common metals that dont take to heat treating well or they don't heat treat critical parts at all leading to them having very high wear rates on critical components like camshafts and the injector pump internals and the injectors themselves. Don't be surprised if this one starts acting up while it still has less than 1000 running hours.

There are good Chinese 168s and there are crappy Chinese 168s, that one looks to be closer to the crappy end. You can usually tell at first sight just by looking at the external build quality. Overall tho they take a fairly hefty beating but I always flush the sump, run it briefly on running in oil (10 minutes, no load) and flush it again before using a good quality oil with first change at 5 hours.

Looks like they use filtered used oil for initial testing . Which I guess is fine since the benefits of brand new oil are resistance to heat change and thinning , I guess it works but that’s really gross that they contaminate a brand new motor like that with random contaminants

The rocker arm pedestal should have a dowel pin to enforce alignment. Could you tell if the piston was only aluminum, vs having steel reinforcement cast in? It looked like the tool for making the housing could have been designed to eliminate the 'dead pool' of oil. That camshaft should have rolling element bearings. It's not going to last with splash lube and high pressure from diesel valve springs. I suspect the metallurgy isn't even close to adequate for a good diesel design. It appears someone who was ignorant of engine design thought they could just convert a gas engine to diesel without accomodating the diesel's significantly higher operating forces. Sheet metal will crack, mounting feet could start breaking off, etc. It's fine for messing around with, but you wouldn't want to rely on one of them.
@306familyfarm

Ya but the hole that the stud goes into must be too big hence the movement side to side. We will see how long it lasts if it breaks I’ll put up another video. Lots of small motors don’t have cam bearings. The Polaris 800 side by side is the same, but it has a oil pump at least.

Not sure about Canada but you can buy these on eBay for about $220 shipped (US dollars). Trying to buy them from China directly through AliExpress is insanely expensive due to shipping. When I bought mine it was shipped from within the US I think.

Some manufacturers run every engine before packing and shipping or pick one out of every 10 or so. You got one they ran. As for debris, you have seen the KZbin videos of some of the "factories" there, haven't you? If you reassemble it clean and correctly, to specs given, it should be okay...for a while. You get what you pay for!
