Agreed. Another podcast looked up the consortium that was pushing for the ban and it involved one or more insurance companies. I don't think they believe these cars endanger other motorists. On the contrary, If a Kei car is involved in an accident, we might assume the driver or passengers could sustain more injuries than a car with modern safety equipment. The insurance companies would be on the hook to pay for those medical bills. So, old cars and motorcycles are exempt? It's a double standard.

An activist group got together and got a policy passed. It was foolish but from the DMV’s perspective, a consumer activist group was telling them these were unsafe. The DMV isn’t full of car enthusiasts. They’re people who needed a job and responded to public pressure. Thankfully they changed when it was made clear that the activist group were being Karens.

@garythecyclingnerd62192 ай бұрын
@@Bryghttt An activist group was raising concerns. Unlike domestic cars or motorcycles, which are common, these were niche cars. Your average DMV worker probably doesn’t know what a kei car is, they’re just people who needed a job. So when these Karens come in suits with documents saying they’re unsafe, they tended to listen. Was it foolish in retrospect? Yes, absolutely. Wish this never happened. But they did the right thing by reversing. Nobody likes headaches but that’s life. I asked him why he didn't just use a "slim jim" to reach into the gap between the glass and the door. He told me that they were instructed to stop using that tool because it could potentially damage the "wiring". I pointed out that there wasn't any wiring in the doors at all in such vehicles.

I actually lived in Japan for 3 years, and drove those "kei" cars from 1992-1995. Not the little sports cars, just the 2 seater trucks. Here is the problem: if they were sold in America, they are so inexpensive, that 10s of Millions of Americans would buy them. Then you would have 1/2 of the Interstates with those small, 660cc engine cars, that can do top speed of 80mph on a good day. That really would be dangerous to everyone. 4X4s, Side-by-sides are not allowed, even with bigger engines, because it would be dangerous to roads that have 50,000lbs huge trucks travelling at 80mph. Someone can drive a 1928 Ford on the Interstate if they want to, but I wouldn't advise it. The term 'Kei' is a shortening of kei-jidōsha, (kanji: 軽自動車), which translates to English as "light automobile". However, basically everyone uses the word "kuruma" for a car.

I have a coworker who's an enthusiast. He has a fairly new WRX STi (manual). He bought it because it was relatively powerful and came with manual trans (and also within his price range). Well he's said dozens of times "I can't drive automatics. It's too boring".He also calls himself a purist. Okay, Purist... with your variable valve timing, direct injection, synchros in your transmission, not double-clutching like you're supposed to... You're not a purist. You're automotive amish. You love tech but have this one exception and then act holier-than-thou about it. If you really want to be a purist build your own car? Put an engine on a bicycle? IDK... Feel like there's "purer" options than a very modern STi.

Really surprised to see 3 car enthusiasts backing the EPA's fine to Cobb. I see it as a depressing sign of the time for the industry, as that was for gas engines. Diesel tuning fines have been numerous as of late, but having one issued to a tuning company focused on gas performance cars, is a depressing sign of whats to come.
