Well todays aim was to use a cheap easy method to catch some specimen canal fish. The main target being roach and rudd. This session was more of a guilty pleasure trip than anything. I'd even considered not filming as I really do just enjoy chasing and stalking big roach with simple methods it can be really rewarding. The chosen method for today was surface and slow sinking bread crust. Super cheap and really easy to do. No complicated rigs just a small float for extra indication and a hook for the bread. Real simple, real easy, fun session.

There is something magical about roach and rudd. I would rather catch a one pound roach than a double figure carp any day of the week. Brilliant stuff Chris

Loving your enthusiasm and the fact you fish for multi species, not just carp. All quality fish should be respected. Hate the way some throw the “wrong” specimens back with disrespect.

Always had a real soft spot for the larger Roach and Rudd, the colouring of the Rudd being especially pleasing and the peppy Perch like fighting of the Roach. Used to fish every free min I had until work got hold of me and my tackle got half inched, watching these videos really brings back the hunger for those early mornings and lazy evenings on the bank! Great content!

I grew up roach fishing on the lee navigation canal in the 70's and caught decent fish to about 1lb 12oz on hemp. You'd be lucky to catch a 8oz one now the stretch having been poached of virtually everything. I'm now based in cardiff and would love to be able to have a day like that. I catch loads of carp on freelined bread plus occasional bream and the odd roach but there is nowhere where that sort of sport is available. You are so lucky! plus you're a very able fisherman! great vid

Well Chris wonderful days fishing for you and great viewing for us. Some really good fish caught on what we used as kids, (my mum was always moaning about the bread bin being empty again). Down here on the Way Navigation, there's plenty of Roach and Rud to be caught and as you say 8/12oz the best.1 pounders are rare. Was wondering about catching a decent size Dace plenty on the canal and river but getting a large one is elusive..'go on show us how' 🤔. Always eager to catch the latest video. Thanks Ginger.

Brilliant footage and commentary Chris. Excellent net of your intended species. Cheap and simple way to catch fish. All you have to do is put the time in to find them, which isn’t as easy as people think. I do a lot of sight fishing in NZ and when you hook a fish doing this method you really can’t describe the awesome feeling you get. Hopefully other anglers will try this after watching this video.

What a great session!😀 It's lovely to see you enjoying catching so many good quality Roach, with the number of Pike in your canal I'm surprised they weren't all injured in some way! I'm not surprised you started catching the Rudd when it was getting darker; I remember my sister and I catching our first Rudd from a lake when it was getting quite late🌛 on exactly the same method you used today - Floating Bread🍞!! We'd only ever caught Carp on that before so it was a great way to end the evening! Thanks for sharing your fishing adventures with us!😄

Thanks buddy! There's literally millions of small roach and rudd in the local canal. There must be like 100,000 roach to every pike 😂 Probably a bit of an over exaggeration, but you get the gist, so you very rarely get silvers with battle scars.

I live on a boat on the staffs Worcester, and although it's decent, it's not got those lovely tench and the rest of the big fish you catch. We got some big carp, pike and perch though. Not like they were in the 70s,if I had half a dozen roach that would be a good day!

oh bruv can't believe how clear your canal is i take it no boats come through ours is a dark green and when the boats come through all the mud kicks up and it's constant never gets chance to settle, every time i go local canal it's always murky and nothing is feeding....i mostly go to local pool for the carp or the river severn which is 2 mile away and i'm always catching chubb on your trotting garlic luncheon meat down river not got a barbell yet but that method is killing it many thanks for your tips and vids love them

I go on the Leeds Liverpool, it's crystal clear at the moment. I think the weeds and plants that grow, through spring and summer filter the water. Usually in autumn and winter it's like chocolate milk, think this is due to the amount of rain in those seasons, washing mud in from fields at the side.

Chris - some beautiful Roach there, taken on what many would describe as an 'unusual method'... Big Roach are awesome creatures - back in the early 80's (when I was younger!), we used to fish for Livebait on the Regents Canal with poles over the top of the dying marginal weed - small pinch of flake looking for small roach to go Piking with. On so many occasions, I caught Roach between 1lb - 1lb 8oz - and believe it or not, we HATED these fish as we put them back because they were too big for livebait! Bread has always been deadly for Roach - those days were before the advent of the 'Breadpunch' for us - but when we found it, we slaughtered the Roach, both on pole and waggler - livebaiting had stopped for us - we simply enjoyed bagging up on these lovely fish!

What is it about roach?!. I've been lucky enough to fish in some fantastic places and caught many specimen fish. However, none give you that thrill of a huge roach. It's just a primal feeling when landing a 2lb + roach. And let's face it, a specimen roach is a thing of utter beauty. P.s. can you get polarising filters for your camera so we can see the fish you're seeing!?. Lol.

Nice to see " real fishing " rather than the fixed line heavy weights cast 30 yes to haul in some poor catp that has probably been hooked a 100 times.Returning to fishing after decades I use a 13ft match rod ,with light float tackle, still catch carp ,roach, rudd, decent sized bream on 12/14 hook size , small baits, bread, corn, maggots. The cost of my total kit is probably less than the trolleys the Carp anglers use to cart around their thousands of pounds worth of kit.
