Great video. I had a similar session a few weeks back. I set out after specimen river perch on small dead roach, but all I caught were pike. The upside was I smashed my personal best pike with one of 16lb 8oz.

Great to see the old simple ways of catching big Autumn Perch still work.☺ That's the basic deadbait rig I used to fish my local rivers round here when I was a kid. And I had plenty of 2 pounder plus fish back in the 80s...not to mention the innumerable pesky Jack Pike and occasionally better fish.😀 But they are good sport when the Perch aren't biting and a lot of fun to catch. In fact you can rove a river stretch and you might even get 100lb net of Pike that way...with enough deadbaits.☺ Cracking brace of Perch at the end though Chris. It's always good to catch the fish that you're after and that last fish was fantastic. Maybe you'll catch it again when it's closer to 3 in the spring? Great fishing and great vid as always. Tight lines mate.☺🎣

Love the content dude you should try lipping the perch like a bass you'd get a better grip to avoid them falling back in the water and doesn't hurt them
@theodorepersson26852 жыл бұрын
i usually use 2 fingers and puts them on the line and following the line down to the hook and then holding the hook and then doing the lipping grip to avoid getting a hook in my finger incase the fish starts shaking

@kermglass Жыл бұрын
@potats1770 That's not true at all perch and bass are in the sun / pan fish family...So perch , crappie, bluegill/sunfish , large and smallmouth bass are all fine and 100% safe to lip 👍
@potats1770 Жыл бұрын
@@kermglass I know that, but perch have a far smaller and weaker lip than bass and people have told me you shouldn't hold them by the lip alone and you should use your pinky to support the weight on the belly

Great to see a small river still thriving, I grew up with an identical river that was full of chub between 2 & 4lb, perch to over 3lb & pike to around 8lb. Sadly it’s a shell of its former self in many ways & hardly any fish left at all over 8oz

I'm jealous of those big, chunky Redfin Perch you have over there on that side of the pond. We have Yellow Perch over here. They're marked pretty similar, but they don't get nearly so CHUNKY and the longest one I've ever heard anyone ever catch was just over 30 cm/1 foot. They're my preferred fish for harvest (I return around 95% of what I catch most years.) because they sit on the intersection of good flavor, plentiful numbers and low mercury levels. Seeing those perch made my mouth water.

Good place to start on rivers is to look for any overhanging trees or slack water - most fish will sit in the slacks from time to time. Trees again, Lilly beds or grouped up boats are good places to start on the canal. Good luck 👍🏻

I live in Northern Ireland and the pollution from lough Neagh is so bad that there’s not even a perch around. I went easily 10 times this summer with the intention of catching some with worms and spinners and not one perch did I catch. Only a few trout because they’re the only things that can survive. I went down to the Republic of Ireland to a spot that has done me well in prior years and caught a 3lb 11 ounce perch and some good sized pike with the dead bait methods. I’m jealous that you live somewhere that you can just head out and enjoy fishing like that. The pollution in our waterways is beyond pathetic. For Lough Neagh in particular the eutrophication is so bad that it could take over half a century to restore water quality if efforts began right now. But guess what absolutely nothing is being done about it.

I just feel bad because i love fishing pikes but i don't want the fish to die just because i hooked her for fun... i fish for fun even though i sometimes get one fish home and cook it (totally legal over here), but it kind of make me feel bad today..
