The cheap chinese knock off carburetor is back and the price has dropped so low that people are buying this epic hunks of garbage. I'll show you why NOT to buy this awful thing and why you should spend your money to get the Edelbrock instead. Seriously. This knock off is awful.

I ended up buying one a few months back due to my old edelbrock carb screws being stripped from numerous rebuilds and over tightening which is totally my fault. But this video is the total opposite of my experience. Perhaps I lucked up mine has been working fantastic since installing and my several attempts at tuning it. I’m sure time will tell if it’s crap or not but for now I’m a happy camper.

The chinese automotive parts manufaturerers make good carburators, almost all of Summits products are made in China. Sure there are higher quality performance carburators hence their price. The guy doing the carb review is a wannabe expert, its mostly hate speech.

@siliconvalleyengineer5875 calling a thief a thief isn’t hate speech. You’re comparing two entirely different designs. One that summit purchased from a Chinese vendor and not a blatant knock off of a well known brand.

We learned a lot from your videos (and still do)!!! and YES those fakes are junk. we notify eBay every time we run across one and let them know they are frauds. Not sure if it does anything, but it makes us feel better. Edelbrock is a great made in the USA company and I hate to see jerks like these guys in KY use the Edelbrock name to sell junk.

These carbs are actually discontinued italian weber designs from the 50's that edelbrock bought the rights to and makes clones of so... it really depends on how far back you want to go with all the copys being made and sold now.
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions 3 ай бұрын
@fathergratwick you’re a little confused on the details. What makes. It confusing is the several manufacturers who made that product at those facilities in NC. Yes Weber owned it for a time. So did Magnetti marelli. Now Edelbrock does. All three had their names in the tooling but that doesn’t mean any of them actually created it. They were just the owners at the time. Like Edelbrock is today. But comparing that to a blatant knock off is ridiculous.
@fathergratwick
@fathergratwick 3 ай бұрын
@@MuscleCarSolutions the last edelbrock I owned only had weber molded into the body as far as I rememeber the edelbrock marking consisted of a sticker. it was my understanding that weber originally designed this like 70 years ago. To be fair there are a lot of car parts now sold by many makers that are copied designs once the patents expire. Some are crap and some arent but they are copies of someone else's design none the less. Like my scat crank which looks a lot like a GM crank or my aftermarket waterpump. And I think edelbrock got started with making copies of gms performance intake manifolds afterall.
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions 3 ай бұрын
@fathergratwick that’s because Weber owned the production facility and as they went through tooling, their logo was embossed in it. Same with Magnetti when they owned it. Same with Edelbrock who now owns it. No, none of those manufactures designed that carburetor. Edelbrock has gone through several internal redesigns to include the annular upgrades to the AVS while the previous two just manufacturers from the original design.

Very good to know. Thank you. As a car guy I love to buy new parts & try out different stuff on my trucks. But as a guy that dousnt really have alot of money after paying bills its hard to buy some parts. Especially good parts. Somtimes I have to wait along time & save small amounts to get parts I somtimes need witch means my hotrod somtimes has to sit while I earn the money. So when I get a new part or just get it running somtimes it's exciting. But if I have a set back, a bad part, it's a huge let down. Carburetors are expensive! Some are dang near a thousand dollers!! So I have to settle for one that works fine even if it's not what I really want. But the one thing worse than not having enuf to get what you really want is spending what you do have just to get going & finding out what you spent your money on is just junk & you can't even use it at all! So you now still have a hotrod you can't enjoy but now you have no money to put towards the part you need.
@MuscleCarSolutions

I think most of us are on some sort of budget. I’d like to not be, but hey sometimes the wait and the effort to earn that next part makes the pride in the work even better! Unfortunately the cheap Chinese knock off parts are just going to continue and some will be successful while others will fail. But as long as there’s a buyer, they’ll keep making them. Sad.

If any of those screws have a 'dimple' next to the cross they are not Phillips heads but rather 'J.I.S.' (Japanese Industrial Standard) and require the appropriate driver, reason why a Phillips screwdriver or drive bit easily slips/strips them out as the angle/depth of the cross is slightly different.

Even a bigger failure if that’s what they are (they aren’t). I’m assuming the Chinese and or whoever might have commissioned this from a factory there would know the general consumer in the US doesn’t have that tool. Not unless they’re a classic power sports enthusiast that MIGHT have a set.

I suspect this is not the case. We’ll eventually find out when I mill it down and measure the channel volume. I think that coupled with the garbage parts inside created the inconsistent, erratic operation. I guess what concerns me more is when folks cheer on products that were 100% stolen and knocked off by the Chinese all in the name of saving a few bucks. American made means nothing to those people.

I have one very old Edelbrock carb, runs excellent since the day it went on twenty some years ago. Retuned it once about eleven years ago when we moved from elevation in Colorado. It came off a fresh wreck when I got it. I would definitely rebuild it before buying a knock off if it ever clogs up. The quadrajet knock offs are supposed to be better, I am going to try one of those until I have time to rebuild my real one. I have too much work to do in my shop to be messing with it right now when I can get a quick cheap temporary fix, if the knockoff is a good one. My quadrajet worked perfectly for a good twenty some years but clogged up over the winter and it just won’t clean out or properly tune. It needs a complete tear down. The old carbs were really designed and well made. Alcohol is the devil on them but most of the rebuild kits claim they are alcohol compatible so hopefully they will out last an alcohol proof knock off by a decade or so after a rebuild. Many working class hot rodders buy what they can afford. The Chinese are making them cheap. Cut government regulations and taxes on our workers and our carb manufacturers and we could be making them cheaper here but I think we all know that will never happen. Most old car replacement parts are made in China. For many parts there are no US options, that is why we hoard certain old parts and NOS parts if or when we find them.

I own an engine shop that does service, maintenance and repair mainly on complex small engines mainly for businesses who own lots of equipment. Landscaping, Hardscape, construction, logging, mobil services and mechanics shops etc. I also do motocross bikes and jet skis. Just stating my credentials before I say this. My experience with chinese carbs has been it's a total crapshoot as to if they will work. And it's about a 50 50 chance they won't work at all if not work poorly. And usually when they won't work you can tell just by quickly inspecting them. Yes they are so off that you can see it with the naked eye. Just like this one.The machining is horrible. Jets will be in crooked. You'll see casting flaws internally. The flaps will be in crooked and not open or close all the way. Accelerator pump cover will be off to where it will never seel. All kindz of sh!t. But there are a couple of chinese replicas that do have a brand name that they will advertise and they do work. But they are also more expensive than the no name ones. Like just for example say if a factory stock tractor carb new costs $500. And you can buy a cheap no mame knockoff with hundreds to choose from for about $75. There will be maybe 3 or 4 of them to choose from that have a name brand you've never heard of and they will be in the $200 range. And they will usually have a satin finsh with only the machined part being shiny. That's the one that will probably be acceptable. Them making the carb shiny is part of the trick. The decent ones are never shiny like that. Like a faux nickel plating or polish like this carb you have. I've had to learn this by trial and error because some things they don't make the carb you need anymore. So you're stuck with a chinese replica. Very few. But some of them actually are decent. Of course that is reflective in the price. But 98% of them are garbage. They're horrible. And as far as a readily available automotive carburetor. I'd never even consider them. They suck. Oh and that carburetor you have. If you paid more than $85-$120 for it then you are most likely a 2nd or 3rd buyer and somebody before you bought it marked it up. You can buy a whole box of them like 25-30 of them for $40-$60 a piece. And they are so cheap it's worth the crapshoot in the long run for some shops with no morals. So cheap if you buy 40 of them and 18 of them work you still come out on top. I don't do that shiz. I'm not crooked and I don't have the time. Chinese carbs are horrible. And that oily sh!t all over it. That's cosmoline. Same sh!t thet put on gun barrels. That keeps the carb shiny until you get it. In a month it won't look like that. Itl look like garbage.

It's obvious that you're biased against Chinese stuff which I don't like it either but you didn't say the casting was bad or you know major flaws in the thing. I can change the Step Up Springs and go through and lock tight the hardware so it doesn't come loose. And most people know Edelbrock carburetors are mainly for stock type engines with stock cams or slightly above stock. I don't know the current pricing on either of these so hard for me to make a decision but if they are one quarter the price of an Edelbrock and then maybe you can buy one and fix it. But if they're only 2/3 of the price of an Edelbrock then why bother? Anyway if you have a seriously built engine you're going to put a holly on it anyway or I have a brawler carburetor which works very well for about 2/3 the price of a genuine Holly

Not sure I’d say an Edelbrock is for slightly more than stock. Maybe a 500 hp and under might be a fair range. The Chinese stuff is garbage. That’s not biased, that’s pretty widely known. You can be proud of it if you wish, but if trying to tune the knock off, I can tell you it still wasn’t happy even with quality parts. I’m guessing it’s limiting factors are internal. Which I’ll confirm one day when I have time to mill it down and compare it to the Edelbrock 600 I milled down last year. I suspect that’s the issue. The parts may be from China, but only buy from sellers in the US with 100% positive feedback.

It works perfectly and for roughly the same price as a rebuild kit for the West German made Solex that came on it. Is it made with the same quality materials that the Solex is made with? Nope. It doesn't even pretend to be. Does it work flawlessly and cost less that $50? Yep. Don't be afraid of these things because they are made in China. They work fine. I will keep the Chinese one on my Beetle until it goes bad and I will install the Solex back on to it, then I will buy a new Chinese one to keep as a backup. It's an ancient piece of technology that isn't hard to make correctly. You can't argue with results.

Edelbrick's carburetor quality must have really jumped up in the last 20 years ? My old Weber/Carter carburetors were great quality peices, until they were "copied" by Edelbrock , putting boosters in the secondaries of the AVS? Cheap design and probably couldn't get the fuel tubes right. Late 90s I would try to contact them for help with parts and not a single person at the company ( back then) could get me any help? Anyway Edelbrock carburetors litter junkyards and pull-a-part yards now so why in the world would anybody pay 200.00$ for a knock off? I think I paid 15.00 $ for a 1405 and a 1404 500cfm. Honestly the old 9000 series I feel was better, even with flat cheesehead screws.
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions Жыл бұрын
You’re a little confused on a few things here. The exact same plant that made the competition series Carter has made the Edelbrock since day one. Literally those folks have been building that carburetor at that facility and some there today were there back in the Carter days. Edelbrock bought the fixtures and molds directly from Weber/Magnetti Marelli. They couldn’t be more identical other than that badge on the front of the carb. Boosters are what meter the fuel in the primary and secondaries. The carb doesn’t operate without them. Not sure what you’re talking about there - the design of the carb didn’t change until Edelbrock updated it for annular boosters in the primaries. As far as tech support goes, there are some long term Edelbrock employees that are still there. Smitty Smith has worked for Edelbrock for 30 years and is still going strong at 70 years old. If you use the contact form on their website, Smitty is the guy that answers those. There is no one in the world that knows that carburetor better than Smitty and the man literally trained every tech since that carburetor has been out. Including most of the tuning guide was written with his guidance. I get it. If you’re brand loyal to the Carter then that’s cool. But the points you tried to make are all completely incorrect. If you’re a fan of the carters, be a fan! As for being in junk yards, I think one thing this channel has done is help people to understand just how painfully easy it is to tune them. You just have to understand the process, which 100% applies to tuning an old competition series.
@iraagans3144
@iraagans3144 Жыл бұрын
@@MuscleCarSolutions I was pointing out that the Original AVS carburetor did not have booster venturi's in the secondaries, they were brass tubes that were angled into the air stream by the air control plate. I'll send you one if you are unfamiliar with the design. Both Mopar and Chevrolet had these. I had a primary booster that extended far down into the bore of the venturi that I was researching form the 70s , I was literally told that it didn't exist? By the tech at edelbrock. Also Secondly air bleeds changes took place between Carter and edelbrock and primary shaft diameter, idle needle diameter and angle took place from carter to edelbrock. Also when Edelbrock name was on every carburetor they pretty much did away with manufacturer specific linkage so you had to buy adapters for anything non Chevrolet. When did you start messing with carburetors?
@MuscleCarSolutions
@MuscleCarSolutions Жыл бұрын
You’re comparing two totally different carburetors. The factor Carter’s came in a wide number of variants and Edelbrock never supported those. Neither did the folks at Federal Mogul when they owned the Carter competition series. The linkage you’re taking about is specific to the vehicle/engine it was offered on by the OE. Carter not Edelbrock “eliminated it”. It’s always been a universal replacement carburetor. I understand what you’re confused about now and it’s comparing a factory Carter to an aftermarket Carter competition series or Edelbrock performer/AVS series. Different animals.

One of the 1406's that came on a vehicle I bought, the carb was almost brand new, maybe 2 months old out of the box and the throttle shafts on both primary and secondary throttle shafts hogged themselves out on the passenger side of the carburetor within 3000 miles. Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN laws )

These days they make Chinese knock offs of pretty much every automotive carb ever, Chinese Holley's, motorcraft carbs, Rochester carbs and now edelbrocks/afbs. If the original carb you have is completely destroyed and not rebuidable and you don't have alot of money a Chinese carb will usually function and get you down the road but most of the time they never run 100% correctly and usually have very poor castings.

It’s one thing if there were good enough to run well, even ok. But I’m 100% sure it’s going to be a massive pain with replacing parts, trying to tune and keeping up with all the difficulties I can see happening. Heck, right out of the box it needs a rebuild kit.
@briang4470
@briang4470 2 жыл бұрын
@@MuscleCarSolutions pretty much all of the Chinese automotive carbs I have fooled with would run but never run quite right. And most of the time the parts they use in them are slight different then the OEM carb so if you try to use an OEM rebuild kit in the knock off carb most of the time the parts and gaskets won't work. I would not recommend buying a Chinese carb for a car,truck,or boat. Maybe for something like a lawn mower or leaf blower but for something that you need to run right and be reliable just find a rebuildable name brand carb. Most of the time you can find good rebuildable edelbrocks on craigslist or market place for $50-$75 then throw a $50 rebuild kit in it and have a decent carb for less than the knock off.
