Are... are you a wizard? XD Seriously, man, this is AMAZING. You just saved me from buying a nano light system that would cost me lord knows how much money. Seriously, lighting is the only thing that has kept me from starting my first reef tank. Also, I never thought of painting the inside of the 10 gallon hoods white for better reflection! Genius! I have an extra laying around somewhere that I tried converting into a CFL hood, but I went with a 20 gal. hood instead. Thank goodness I did!

It's important to keep seawater away from the sockets or pin connectors, depending on which type of bulb you have. The glass part of the bulb itself may be water resistant but the socket end of the bulb is generally not. Most manufacturers recommend a lens of some sort. Either that or place the bulb(s) well above the salt spray.

THANKS! I did it too. Same Tank, Bulbs, White Paint exactly as you did. Now I got a 10 gal mini reef with a flower pot coral to start.

@algolake That whistling is the sound of high-volume air blowers running in the background. It is a feature of most large land-based mariculture facilities.

Note that for best results we recommend starting with hardy beginner soft corals -- mushrooms, zoanthus polyps, Anthelia, Xenia, green star, Sinularia, etc.

No heater on the 10-gallon tank. Our tank was at 70 degrees F this morning, and by afternoon it will be up to 82F or even 82F. If it was getting down into the 60's we'd add a 25 watt heater.

These are self-ballasted bulbs! There is no external ballast. All of the equipment needed is shown in the video.

The 4 watts per gallon is good for soft corals and some hardy LPS corals like Blastomussa and Caulastrea. It is not enough for SPS corals though.

Aloha! The metal reflectors came with the unit but they are not essential. Painting the unit white improves the reflectivity of the hood. It is not absolutely essential though.

Wish I could get those light bulbs in the Philippines!

so does that mean that the Flower pot isn't a good option? Hmmm it seems to be doing great. let me know.

For this particular hood the 9 inch bulbs are too long. As we state in the video, you want 20-watt Coralife 50/50 bulbs -- the bulbs themselves are closer to 4 inches long.

Once a year remove the acrylic lens and replace the bulbs. The seal is soft and it is easy to separate the lens from the hood. Lay down a new bead of silicone and replace the lens. It's a 10-minute job! If this is TOO much work for you then buy a NanoCube at four times the cost.

Ours says "not to exceed 25 watts," so that would be our recommendation.
