Got to say I'm surprised that there was such a significant difference with these cameras. Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing.

I had this one on my watchlist until I learned it had fixed shutter speed and such a small max aperture. If I'm gonna use a fixed/limited settings camera, I'll choose one with manual film control. In fact I have a Fuji FZ-5, DL-8, and just ordered an FZ-6. But for motorized, I got the Canon Sure Shot Owl PF Date (more recent and improved model than the one you reviewed). Great range of auto settings, and that heavenly viewfinder!

Always enjoy your videos! I recently got an Olympus trip xb40 after rereading a cool article from Casual Photophile recommending cheaper film cameras. Love the wide angle and the big view finder!! Thank you for videos!!

Thanks Kary! There are a lot of decent inexpensive shooters out there (including the Trip XB40 - no need to spend an arm and a leg on fancy, trendy compacts.

Im a fan of my xb400. Its shows a time that they were trying to shake up the design of the range. I will say its a funny looking thing, but its an easy camera to travel with day to day and as you said the view finder is a great thing. It sits by my 35 trip in my display.

Noealz - Rain Photographer Yes, if you want a more subtle look, the MD3 is the way to go. Sometimes these challenge cameras give very similar results - I like it when there’s a noticeable difference like this.

Hi hello, I have another question, when I’ve used up all of my shots, does the camera automatically rewind the film back to its canister or do I have to push the mid roll rewind button? Sorry I’m very very new to film. Thank you!!

It will automatically rewind it for you.

@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy 4 жыл бұрын
katy Martinez After you shoot the roll, there’s a button on the bottom that you have to slide in the direction of the arrow to rewind the film. Then slide the lever on the side down to pop open the back of the camera - then you can take the roll of film out and it’s ready to be developed. Thanks for watching!

hello! I just recently bought an Olympus trip xb 401 similar to Olympus trip xb 400. how do you make the flash work? I noticed that both cameras don't have an option whether you can use it with flash or without flash. hope you could reply!! thank you!

Hi - It’s automatic flash - there’s not really an easy way to override this that I know of. Mine fires the flash every time I push the shutter button.

Just bought the MD3 from a thrift store! But it’s hard to tell if you have loaded the film correctly and if it’s actually taking pictures, can you advise me on how I can tell? I slotted the film into the far right edge of the camera or was I supposed to slot the film into that little metal clasp? Help! Love your videos
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy 4 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to slot it through the little metal clasp. Sounds like you did everything right and should be good to go. Thanks for watching!

Mariah Dela Cruz Hi! Can you tel what the model or name of the Olympus camera is? If it’s a simple point and shoot like these, you’ll have to open the lens cover and then push the shutter button (usually on top) to see if the shutter opens and closes. On models like these, you’ll hear the camera winding on (even if there’s no film in most cases). I might be able to tell you more if I know the exact model. Thanks for watching!
@MariahDelaCruz
@MariahDelaCruz 4 жыл бұрын
Hellooo its the Olympus MD3 ST. I did open the lens cover too and pressed the shutter button, but nothing's happening :(
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy 4 жыл бұрын
Mariah Dela Cruz On the MD3 ST, the shutter should open and the camera should wind when you push the shutter button. Unfortunately, you might have a dead camera. If your batteries are fresh and installed correctly, there’s one more thing I would try. You can clean the battery contacts inside the battery chamber with some white vinegar on a Cotton swab (Q-Tip). Even a little battery corrosion can keep a camera from firing. If this doesn’t work, you might be able to find an inexpensive similar replacement camera at a thrift store. Good Luck!

Hello! Don’t know if you’ll see this but I was wondering how you could tell if the xb400 was taking pictures? It makes a sound and flashes but I’m not sure about how many shots I have left? Is there a counter of this cam? There is that small window up top but it just says s? Is there supposed to be a count going on?
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy 3 жыл бұрын
The window with the s is the counter - it should show the number of shots you have taken if the film is advancing correctly. When loading the film, make sure you pull the end of the film all the way to the left so the take up spool will take it up and advance it for you.

Killer comparison and yes the results are quite different. Do you use a lab for your films?
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy 4 жыл бұрын
Raychristofer Thanks Ray. I use CineStill Cs41 kits for all my color negative film now. I’ve got 15 rolls of C-41 to develop - I’m hoping to knock out 4 or 6 rolls today. I’ve been using CineStill Df96 Monobath for BW - the Monobath doesn’t agree with every BW stock, but I shoot mostly HP5 and XX, and it plays nice with those.
