I don't consider these Schrade knives "cheap" in the quality sense, though compared with many of the "leading name" survival knives, Schrade are VERY LOW-PRICED indeed. In the UK, I have just bought the Schrade SCHF37 for GB£39.99 which is approximately US$52, which I feel is a very low price for a knife so very highly rated per my research and per reports/reviews I have seen and read. In effect, these Schrade knives are bargains ! Best wishes. August 6, 2018. #

I watched this again today. Great job, I especially appreciated the explanation you gave about the tip test and how it can be overrated and that one should expect a tip to fail under such quasi-abusive testing. I have a channel, I do mostly budget folding knives and there are always guys asking for abusive testing but I feel weird about that because it's not a test of how it will function under normal use. Test to failure certainly has a place, I just get the feeling that many guys want a knife to not reach failure - sort of odd because everything will fail, eventually, it's just a question of when. The point isn't will it fail, but will it do what it should do.

I hate that people knock free gear. In this case you got to really beat these for us and not be out $100. Whereas my 36 I paid for won't see severe abuse just regular use... Hell the scaxe2l that schrade sent me I hit with a hammer on the edge. Wouldn't do that if I paid for it. We as reviewers are tougher on the free stuff, and as a result everyone wins.

Great review. I own the original SCHF10 and the SCHF9 and I love them. I own a lot of Schrades but also CRKT, Kershaw, Gerber, Opinel, SOG and even Camillus. In my experience the people at Schrade have good customer service. I am currently waiting for a replacement sheath for a new SCHF31 as mine has no retention. I was promised that a new sheath would be pulled for me and tested before being sent to me. I feel confident that Taylor Brands will replace a broken blade or a badly made sheath without any hassles.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and performance of the ferro rods that Schrade is producing and including with these knives. I have the SCH36 and it isn't on par with my ESEE 6 or Ontario Gen 2 series but it is a very nice package for $30. The black coating that Schrade uses is too rough and should be stripped as soon as possible. The nylon sheath is serviceable but nothing to brag about. I like the rubber scales. The handle jimping that everyone is complaining about doesn't bother me and it can be easily removed with a file and belt sander if necessary. Now I highly recommend these for anyone who only has $30 to spend on a fixed blade. Strip the coating, use a decent stone aned put a better edge on it and get a kydex sheath and you will have a nice beater fixed blade that can do everything a $130 TOPS, CS or ESEE can do.

I’ve had the SCHF26 for a while, and for my normal knife use, this one has been abused, but I only paid something like $26 for it. I’ve had it for a little over a year and I’ve done a lot of small tree limb whacking clearing trails, and the finish is certainly holding much better than yours. I did not get a stone or fire starter with mine, but the pouch in the sheath allowed me to put a small stone in there. Overall, these knives are a great bargain, are heavy and hold up well for some heavy usage. A fine cutting instrument? Probably not, but plenty sharp enough for what I use it for.

I have the SCHF36 & SCHF9. The 36 I worked on the jimping a little to make it less aggressive. I believe the SCHF9 was made in Taiwan where the 36 was made in China. Both good knives for the money.

I like the test that you gave the Schrade #36, #37 and #38 knives. I think you made a very thorough evaluation and reported the actual facts, as it should be done. I applaud your report. I previously purchased (1) Model #36 and (1) model #37 Schrade to give to two of my long time friends and camping/fishing buddies. I really liked the look, feel, sharpness out of the box and the overall quality of those knives, so tonight I ordered a #36 and a #37 for myself! Great value for the price. I have purchased many Chinese bush-crafting items over the past couple of years, some of it good and some of it bad. The Schrade knives are definitely very good.

I'm glad you recommend the 38 because that is the one I bought. I don't like finger choils for the most part. I think it is a waste of cutting real estate. I did not know the tips on the 36 and 37 were not as strong. I know the 38 has a very stout tip, but will not press my luck with a tip test. My knife is great at batoning, but also works just fine for smaller carvings. Thanks for showing all three side by side. They are a tremendous value (not cheap).

Do you ever use a steel to bring an edge back up? Knives are for cutting. The edge extends out from the taper and has micro serrations and feathers that a steel can bring back up. If it were a SHTF situation, unless you have access to a forge and ore, that one in your hand could be the last one you ever own.

Just want to post a note. I just purchased the SCHF37 and it came in today. Brand new, not used. I took it outside to test it. I batoned some 3 year old split logs and a limb that was about the size of a soda pop can and about a foot long. The knife broke in half! It batoned the split log with no problem, then when I was starting on the limb it just broke in half.

I have read that has happen with another person doing the same thing. Also read and see pictures of a Ka-bar breaking on the blade. Someone told me it has to do with how the metal is heated. Its not like I don't have either of the these knifes I do. I did some reading and what I did read doesn't make Esee the best knife but I did some work with and darned if the blade still cut paper. And what I read was that Esee does cook the knifes diff, so far so good. Esee 6 I like it. Oh, everything you read on the net is true.haha

Same here , chopped realy well (dry fir) as soon as i batoned with it it broke right where the blade edge meets the outer finger choil. I had bought 2 one for me and one for my brother . We picked the straightest grain you could find and his broke too 2 hits in. That being said when we took a look at the breaks you could see a black almost rust going up a half inch from the knife edge. These are obviously flaws , i got them from amazon. I think the handle scales are great , the knife feels good in hand and it chops like hot a damn. would i buy this knife again , yeah im gonna give them another chance . I belive i just got a flawed batch.I havent seen too many people complain about this , your bound to get some duds once in a while I guess.

I'm not a knife fanatic but I got the 36 model and it's the best knife I've ever owned. I fail to see how other knives that are almost identical in shape and have slightly different handles are so much better. 3 or 4 times the price better. You got to be a knife fanatic to justify it. To me, they might as well be the same knife, only the other is overpriced.

M85FSLUVR I'm Sure they're sharp. They just don't cut well because they are super thick. Just like any other thick knife it doesn't matter how razor sharp you get them the geometry doesn't allow the knife to glide trough material.

Just to add to this review. I made the mistake of buying a schrade knife a Old Timer Pro Hunter Full Tang Fixed Blade Knife (TB-PHW) Based on that neither I nor any of my aquaintances will be purchasing schrade knves in future. I'm in the UK land bought mine form a dealer here BA Blades. The very first time I used this knife I used it to strip the bark from a piece of wood I was making into thumbstick. All I did with it was strip the bark the blade was marked on the edge which was a surprise more so was was that the Grind Line where the ground bevel meets the cheek was stained. The gy who made this video the the video for that knife and other schrade knives used his Pro Hunter to baton cut and shave wood with no detrimantal effects. But even in close up you would not be able to see the damage done on my knife with the video's magnification. I contacted the dealer who's rep said he'd get back to me. He asked for pictures I sent them. He did not get back to me to I got back to him. He said he would have to see what schrade said, 2 more months and I have heard nothing. We won't buy Schrade again or from PJS (UK) Ltd Trading as BA Blades in Kent.

tfr51 A knife shouldn't be used to "stick and pry". That tip test is literally just destruction test and really it comes down to blade geometry. If you took a $200 Spyderco Temperance and did that test, the tip would definitely snap off whereas a $25 Cold Steel GI Tanto wouldn't. Doesn't mean the GI Tanto is a better knife, just better at that 1 task which neither knife should be used for to begin with. I'm assuming you received the 36 by now, have you used it? How do you like it?

Michael StJohn I have a 9 and it is a chopping devil! I don't have a 37 yet, but will have one soon and will let you know. I also really like the recurve blade on the 9. While some think it is hard to sharpen with the recurve( which it is but just a little). The curve on that blade really lets it cut much better than a knife that thick should. The curve leads the material being cut into the blade and it cuts really well. Jerry

Michael StJohn Mike I know that and in general agree with that. But those tip/stab tests over and over are a little over the top. And he did say in the review that it was abuse. But a lot of people don't really listen to what is said and will just see the broken tips and think those blades are no good ( see the post of tfr51 below). My point is that tests that extreme really do no one any good. As there is really no point in repeatedly stabbing and then prying on a stump like that. I have never seen or heard of any woodcraft tasks that require anything similar. Jerry

Hey Jerry, a comment above said that it was discovered that many of these knives weren't heat treated properly. How do you suppose Schrade found this out? Probably from folks beating on them. Now, Schrade is offering to replace any of these knives that break. Seems to me, testing like this always serve a purpose.....the end users/consumers. As long as folks that see this understand this would be considered heavy use/abuse, normal people won't expect goods results if duplicated.
@jerrymorris1527
@jerrymorris1527 9 жыл бұрын
M85FSLUVR I have not seen anything about the heat treat being sub-par from any reliable source. While that is possible, I would think more would have been said about it on KZbin/internet. With that being said, I still can NOT fault the knives or their heat treat. The repeated stabbing and prying into a tree stump, is by a wide margin abuse...for any knife. That would be a test for a pry bar, and some small pry bars might fail that. Remember that the tip of a knife is tapered, normally in 2 directions. Not really that much metal in a tip. And the 2 tips that did break only lost a very small portion. Not enough to really affect the usefulness of the knife for its intended purpose. Jerry

I got the 36 model. I've had mine over 3 years and I paid under $30 for it. I'm not a knife guy but I got a little bit interested in knives a few years back. I did research and everyone said get full tang of 1095 steel.. Thats why I bought the Schrade.. Now after 3 years, I've come to the conclusion that the knufe community are idiots and 1095 is too hard and brittle.. It breaks like glass.. I've watched the destruction test of all the popular expensive knives and the Kabar and Esee broke like glass on the first slap against a concrete block.. The 1095 Schrade actually outlasted all the expensive popular 1095 knives that cost 5x more.. Go watch Joe X.. He destroys knives... And the 1095s all break and it's not because they weren't heat treated properly like you folks keep saying.. ALL the 1095s were brittle. This is why they don't make tools put of 1095.. Your hammers would snap if they were made of 1095.. I don't know how this obsession with 1095 started in the knife community but I'm not even a knife guy and I know it's the wrong steel for a knife.
