Back in the 80' and 90's we use to use gas to get tar off and WD40 on motorcycle and car wheels to keep oil sling and road grime from sticking. We also used it on lower car panels to keep tar from sticking to the panels. We have came along way. Great video Jimbo

Gasoline is honestly just fine. I paint occasionally and I sometimes have to use it as a thinner. It’s actually kind of weak compared to other thinners. (Mineral spirits/paint thinner such as Xylene) If the chemical that you use to clean the paint is less aggressive than the chemical used to thin the paint with, you would almost have to douse the paint to remove any of it. However you’re very likely removing some clear coat but it’s literally no worse than wet sanding and in this case gasoline was probably the best thing (least aggressive thing) you could have used. Great work

I am happy you did this video. 95% of Bug & tar will fail with this kind of dry tar on the paint. it is obvious that you need a petroleum dissolver. I advise you to try Rain-X bugs and tar remover it is solvent and working safely on the paint a try it on both silver and black cars the tar was there over a year and easily it has dissolved and removed it. you can also try to do Rain-X bugs and tar remover vs Citrol 266 Degreaser it will be a fair test, in my opinion, one spray both of them on paint wait for 30-60 seconds scrub with bug sponge and pressure wash it. I have tried this it works even on dry Cement and concrete. also, there are other effective products for tar removing such as GUNK spray can bug & tar and CYCLO Bug & Tar Clean (Extra strength creamy Formula) both of them are also solvent based and cheap and very strong spray aerosol. Gasoline leaves spot behind and you have to do 1 step polishing, I was doing that for the past 20 years until I discovered these products.

Paint Thinner aka Mineral Spirits will remove the tar, bugs, adhesives, road paint, etc. And it's 100% safe for the clear coat. Gasoline will make the clear coat tacky, and soften it. But it will reharden in a few days/weeks.

Paint thinners will dissolve the paint as these are what are used to reduce the paints consistency to atomise through a gun. I DO NOT RECOMEND that thinners are used anywhere near your paint or plastics!

I have a white diamond Silverado and had almost identical road tar on the lower of my vehicle... I used the Turtle Wax Bug &Tar and much like your vid nothing happen at first. I could scrape very hard with my thumbnail and get small particles off and that was about it. I then decided to let the product sit for a little longer(15 min or so) and tar was slowly breaking down. I eventually had to use a synthetic clay bar while the product was on the vehicle to get good results but it took about 50 minutes to an hour and that was just the one side.

Jumbo. That car drove over a recent asphalt section that was recently laid. When your tar product did not touch and the sound when you rubbed with the glove were indicators that this was not normal tar. Look sometime at asphalt machine and you will see that exact brown stain. As suggested by others diesel fuel works, they use same to clean up tools on asphalt jobs. Most do not carry diesel for good reason. Try Citrol degreaser as often mentioned by others. Demo was not a failure of products, it was just hard stuff!
@autodetailingpodcast6 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Thanks man!
@Samuelfish2k6 жыл бұрын
thomkirby What do you mean by ‘most do not carry diesel for good reason’?
@MyGuyKirby6 жыл бұрын
Most auto detailers do not carry along diesel fuel (DF) unless they drive diesel trucks. DF is not as flammable as gasoline but does still have an oily base and is a real mess to clean up. Now with being more sensitive to environment issues getting DF on the ground is something to avoid. But for a old method used for many, DF was and can be a way to soften and remove oil-based stains. See it all the time around asphalt crews and did use it myself working in the oilfield jobs many years ago. And when you do use either Gasoline or DF, please take care and use protective gloves. That holds true of just filling up your diesel trucks and autos.
@Samuelfish2k6 жыл бұрын
thomkirby The 1 good thing about diesel compared to regular gasoline is that it’s nowhere near as harmful if inhaled. History reminds us of this, as the Nazis were stupid enough to use diesel for their so called gas chamber exterminations that anyone with a brain knows were completely impossible any way you slice it!
