Carter Mansfield Drinking may be encouraged at a younger age in places such as France or Italy, and especially Spain where children at the age of 7 may be allowed a glass of wine with dinner under parental supervision (which I certainly agree with because it does encourage moderation). However in Ireland it is actually mostly discouraged that children should drink because it's seen as "starting them too early" in most cases. Obviously there are many families in Ireland who do introduce alcohol to their children when they are younger to teach them moderation but often this isn't the case. So in Ireland we too have just as much of a problem of teenagers getting their hands on their first drink with their friends usually as young as 12 or 13 (as I did) as in the U.S, although the only difference I have found is that in Ireland teenage alcoholism tends to arise at an earlier age.

Gazzeth Kensington NO! :O Not actually Spain! At the age of 7 your parents may let you taste a sip of wine or beer (and laugh at the kids disgust face). Most of the people I know didn't drink alcohol with their families until 13-14, and just a glass of cava (spanish champaigne) during weddings or new year's eve/christmas. And a lot of people doesn't drink in front of their parents until 18!

Well, unlike beers, which many people dislike the taste of, good wine is hard to mistake. The first tip comes from the aroma, then you confirm with taste. Don't need to be an expert to tell wine is good.

themegamariobros1 All I'm saying is there's still a bias, whether it's a slight one or a large one. Plus, he's not a wine expert--he's a beer expert. I don't see how that makes him a 'professional' in wine. Besides, when has Buzzed been known to always have accurate information on their channel? They also have a "pizza expert" and a "coffee expert" episode of this . . . what makes them "experts?" I just thought it would be interesting to add the rest in, but that's just me. You don't have to agree with me.
@themegamariobros1
@themegamariobros1 9 жыл бұрын
whackedout101 The reason is that he makes alcohol professionally including many types. As for the other experts they are payed to taste test those foods and have actually spent years training. (At least the coffee guy did) I don't think there is but a bias being there is possible.

Andrew Bordeuxpe How could they be biased? They where comparing cheap genereic versions of a product vs. the high end stuff they're used to. They weren't ranking wine vs beer.
@tirsden
@tirsden 9 жыл бұрын
Possibly because if they used an expert in the actual drink type, the expert might know what brand of wine or beer they are drinking, which would essentially be cheating and would color their review based on personal biases in their past. It's like the video where they have a perfume expert give her opinion on household scented products as if they are perfume. It's not perfume, because she'd know "ah, that's Red Door" or the like.

There is nothing wrong with box wines. The problems are what wine is put into it and how long do you plan to store the box? But yeah. My parents often by semi classy wines in box form since they might not want to finish the bottle they are drinking but feel like quitting before they are hammered without wasting the remaining part of the bottle.

You must've never seen wine in real life. Boxes were never, are not and will never be the norm. Bottle cost is minor and shipping cost is not even worth mentioning. Bottles are inferior at maintaining quality? Come one now, that is just trying to be stupid. Not a single self respecting high quality wine will ever put their wine in boxes. Boxes are generic low quality wine that people who don't care all that much for wine will buy.

I'd love to see what would happen if you put a few of those wines in expensive bottles and told the guy they cost over $100. I mean clearly not the blue one but most of wine tasting has been proven to be psychological. People will think it tastes better if it costs more. In blind tests over 65% of professional wine tasters will say that Two Buck Chuck, the Trader Joe's Wine is the best wine and likely the most expensive. My great grandmother apparently loved this one wine. When it got too expensive they used to buy a similar cheap wine and refill the bottle and at Christmas she'd get a new fresh bottle of the real stuff. They pulled this off for over two decades and she never knew.

I don't know if it matter, but in one episode of Mythbusters, there was this myth about refining vodka (I really don't remember exactly). They brought a "vodka expert". He did a good job identifying the cheap, the good and the refining. So I guess if you are trained well enough you can actually bypass that psychological part.
@blryan23
@blryan23 10 жыл бұрын
That's vodka. It is a different type of alcohol. Just like pricier beers tend to taste better than cheaper beers, pricier vodkas taste better than cheaper vodkas. But wine is a whole different story. There are tons of factors in how people taste wines and just by telling someone that the wine cost more makes them more likely to believe it even if it isn't true. Something as minor as the temperature of the wine changes the taste.

I've posted these studies numerous times on here but most of the studies show that seasoned sommeliers are the worst at telling differences between wines because their biases are stronger. The best at telling differences tends to be people with no knowledge of wine because they aren't affected by the same biases. I'm allergic to Red Wine so I can't say anything aside from what I've red in studies. I drank red wine once and after trip to the hospital never did so again.

I think you guys are confused. I didnt say it would fool him, I said it would fool you and I. Read my comment again. Besides, up to a certain point they all can only taste so much better. Wine is one of those douchey things used by people to feel better about themselves anyways. If your motive is to get drunk theres better, tastier, and less expensive ways to do so.

***** Wine is something used by douches as a status symbol to feel better about themselves, a totally different kind of fun that me and you are talking about. It kind of ruins it for me knowing Im drinking something that someone else would laugh at even though its not that serious. This is a good point, but at the same time while $15 may seem low, I would say that it's about the cut-off point for shitty wine. You can find some impressive bottles for around $20. I would define "cheap" wine as under $5.

"Why did a brewmaster review wine and a winemaker review beers?" I can't speak for alcohol, but in the food tasting world, this is actually a fairly common thing to do. You want someone who has a good, well trained tongue, but who won't instantly be able to tell the origins of the food they're tasting, which might taint the opinion they give. You want them to be able to say "Yeah that is very badly made" but without them instantly knowing it is a slice of cheese from a place with a bad reputation, or a place they have already had a bad experience with, and that they SHOULD review it badly. It's all about keeping them objective.

People always tend to assume that "tasting experts" are biased if they're told they're drinking the cheap stuff and would be thrown if something more high end were tossed into the mix. But other (non-Buzzfeed) videos have show other experts in wine, beer, vodka, being given a variety of the alcohol they specialize in and told to rate it, and they've all been on the nose. MythBusters did one with a vodka expert, and she rated them perfectly.

well it depends: the wines in the video are plain garbage. So if you are saying that it's a joke that those experts can distinguish between good and really good wines, then I mostly agree with you, on the other hand, to find a difference between the wines shown in the video and "fair enough" wines it's definitely easy and anybody who tasted a good wine in his life can easily do it.
@StuPV

Suggesting that good wine and bad wine are essentially the same, with different prices, is ridiculous. If you want to suggest that floral notes, stone fruit, elements of spice and what not is in the eye of the beholder, you have a different and probably valid argument

I am a bit confused about how this video ended up being made and called what it was. A number of the "wines" were not wines. The Blue Hawaiian one, as it says on the bottle, is an apple wine product, a wine based beverage at best. The sangria, is also in this category. They seem like very strange choices, surely there are other popular cheap wines that are actually wine and not a mix.
@TravisStewart42
@TravisStewart42 9 жыл бұрын
And on top of that, the person selected to do the tasting was a brewmaster, who brews beer. I realize he likely has experience with this, but it also seems like an odd choice. Why not find someone that specializes in wine?
