I just want to say thank you for mentioning AJ Bonar. I looked him up and watched the bebetter golf videos. This guy is simply a genius. I wish I knew about his brilliant approach to golf years ago.

I’ve been watching you for years and really appreciate how you have tested all the swings and are teaching us in this series the absolute essentials based on your experience. Could you provide me the link to your instant results video you referenced in this video? Also, have you ever tried training aids that have helped you with the feels that you recommend?

I tried copying the link here, but it's not working for some reason. If you go back in my channel video list, you'll see a pic of a golf ball with a nail through it, down by my feet that says "Instant Results". I'm not big on training aids really. I'm sure there are some that are worth it, but my experience is that many of them are "pet rocks" to make a buck, when you'd be just as well served to practice getting there yourself.

Weird… you read my mind. I watched a video a week ago from a PGA Pro that said- ‘Focus only on the grip position during ball contact.. the target position is the INSIDE of the LEFT KNEE. Forget about the ball. Just focus on this one thing’. You’re saying the same thing, and now I’m hitting ball then turf every time. 👍

Good stuff Chad, do you have a favorite drill for getting the low point of your iron swing in the same place every time, on a mat I can hit behind ball and still get a good result, it’s not the feed back I need

Bryson actually had a good video recently working with Rick Shiels, and then solo, and it's actually what Marcus Edblad has done also. You can get in a bunker, draw a line, and practice striking after the line without hitting it. Inside, on a mat, you can use painters tape, make a line, and make swings without disturbing the tape.

Interestingly, your launch angle diagram for irons has the high launch with what very much appears to be a positive angle of attack. I do think that this is possible especially for a longish iron and the right lie. Maybe the club levels out just before the ball and then the clubhead is slightly climbing during impact. One of the biggest keys (if not the biggest) is for the club to be dropped and start falling at the right point in the approach to the ball. This depends on how the turn of the shoulders and the weight shift, plus the pull of the lead arm get the club to the ball in the downswing which can vary a lot. The clubhead must drop while it's still behind the hands, and the faster the lead arm moves through impact, the faster this must happen to get the right angle of attack for optimization. A lot of golfers with weak impacts would be well served to try and throw the clubhead downwards actively with their hands while the club is still well behind their hands in the downswing and the harder and faster that they turn through the more that they would need to do this. Golfers need to remember that the club needs to get low enough and inside enough early enough to produce a good strike. It's a little counterintuitive but the hands need to get ahead of the ball in 2 planes vertically and horizontally at impact. This is why Cameron Champ has such shaft lean through impact because he has tremendous horizontal rotation through impact and is also leading the clubhead horizonally around his body through impact. However such a thing is impossible if the clubhead does not drop (fall towards the ground) behind the hands early enouigh and fast enough. Cheers.

Yeah, the diagram is one I pulled from Google, and it shows an iron, but I implanted it into my driver on the tee chat, hoping that the angles would be king. But also, yes, I agree, with long irons and hybrids, given a fairway lie, a zero or even slightly positive attack is possible, but it may not be optimal. Hard to know without context and a given set of circumstances to take into account. I also love the thoughts on the clubhead and its position during the swing. I think if you were trying to relay this from strictly a club perspective, replace "hands" with "grip". The thing I've learned is that you can set "proper" golf positions and motions from basically 2 different points of view. One, is to think that if you hold the club a particular way, setup a certain way, and make all the moves correctly at the right times, the club will do as it should and strike the ball well. My perspective is that if you work on just getting the club into the right positions at the right time, your body will learn to move in a way that facilitates that club movement, and the shoulders, arms, hips, etc. will find the places they need to be for you.

@@GolfTestDummy Yeah, I was trying to speak from your current perspective which is club and hands.. However, there are a lot of things happening from halfway down that affect how the club approaches the ball. The weight is shifting to the lead foot, the trail elbow is getting closer to the trail side, the hips start to open, and just before impact, there is a slight standing up that starts to happen , and there begins to be a true freewheeling rotation acound the spine angle which release the head and neck. So if you want to focus on just club and hands, there has to be a kind of "prediction" that one makes of how the club wil be approaching the ball starting from halfway down up to the point of when all of these motions are completed (or underway in some cases) especially in a full swing. Because things are shifting as described leading up to impact, if's very easy to leave the club too high and too outside so the biggest thing to concentrate on when thinking just hands and club is to start getting the club lower and further back right around halfway down or even before if you're swinging hard. Even getting the hands involved in doing this can be helpful in many cases. BTW, this is basically very similar to Edblad's circle of speed which is essentialy dropping the club behind the turn down and straightening the trail arm farther back. which when coupled with the downsing turn sequence gives an almost ideal appraoch into the ball. It can look quite different depending on where you play the ball and what your turn sequence looks like but the concept is essentially pretty universal in high quality powerful swings. I also think that Marcus does get his hands involved in this motion, particularly on harder swings, in order to get the club low and inside fast enough for good impact. Cheers.

Chad, enjoying your videos. What I think all amatuers (including me) should be thinking, and you hit the nail on the head, is the golf club handle, i.e., your hands, and NOT the clubhead. I say this because the handle controls what the clubhead does, and in many cases it works in opposite of each other. Ex. push the handle down and the clubhead goes up, pull the handle up and the clubhead goes down. This is no way means that the golfer should be pulling the handle up, in fact, the golfer should really be pushing the handle down AND around the body. If the golfer pulls the handle up, he or she will be early extending and needing to flip, which is no good. Pushing the handle down AND the around the body as well as twisting the handle towards the target side will produce an in-to-out and back-in swing plane (arc) with a closing clubhead, which is what we all want. So, I said all of this to say, we should be focusing on controlling the club handle and NOT focusing on the clubhead. Cheers, and congrats on getting past the 10k mark.

For me, the penny dropped during the last round last season. Had a good start but then everything fell apart. The lowpoint was all over the place, and the more tired and frustrated I got, the wider the stance became and the harder I tried to hit that little round disgusting thing. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Then on 17 I suddenly realised about the stance and put my feet together to a very narrow stance, and voila, I started to strike well again. I’ve hit a few practice shots with very narrow stance, and it’s night and day for consistency, although some people claim you lose distance.

Great scenario to reflect on, and I love when people ask WHY. That means you're digging in to discover something and that's a plus. Your observation was your feet got further apart and your focus became the ball. Then, it was fixed when you went feet together. That forced you to do something you weren't doing, or stop doing something that was hurting your result. So, my next question would be; Why did that help? It's really difficult for me, or anyone else, to answer that without context, but you could figure out, since you know yourself and your swing. One guess, which may or may not be accurate, could be that when your feet were spread, you had a super stable platform, that supported you making incorrect movements with the club and your body. But, feet together meant that you couldn't force movements, you had to allow movements. And those are 2 completely different things. It's always awesome when you've been struggling and you can fix it. Great feeling of accomplishment.

Thanks for your input! My best guess is that I, with a wide stance, sway instead of turning hips and shoulders in the backswing. With a narrow stance you can’t really sway, because you will lose your balance.

What happened to the steelfibers? Also, have you watched the channel “easiest swing”? They strongly believe that the traditional golf swing “pro swing” is not a natural body movement and should not be embraced by amateurs. The pro’s can do it well because they were taught the method at a very young age and repeat it daily. Even if something is wrong, it can be perfected if practiced daily.
