The really interesting thing about this example is that as soon as it happened, people started coming out of the woodwork saying "yeah, he had this reputation in our local circle and couldn't get games a result," or "everyone sorta knew you had to watch him carefully at tournaments" or even "we cut ties with this guy for our paid coaching service because we knew about his penchant for cheating." So he had been doing it for years, and it was known about, but it took it actually showing up on a stream to be able to actually do anything about it. This argues in favor of harsher punishments - because cheating in 40k is so hard to catch, when someone actually does get nabbed red-handed, they've probably got away with it dozens of times in the past.

@@bellportbattlebunker4682 Unfortunately happens far to often in games, especially TCGs. You see some the the stuff being done in MtG and Yugioh tournaments and the skill with slight of hand just screams "They've done this in at least 90% of their games." They also then usually come out saying it was an accident and they're sorry for the mishap and it'll never happen again. Between the time he got banned and the next Con he literally dyed his hair, got a tan, changed his style of clothing and registered under a different name for the event. In my local clubs one is a hot bed of known cheaters, so much so that they have curbed all external members from playing there due to the toxic nature of said players. In my main club, we have a subscription service that can be terminated to stop them from playing here if folk don’t like the clubs rules on being a ‘gentleman gamer’. We’ve had to deal with everything from fake dice, fake faqs, over spending points, adding /changing equipment on the fly (helped by not using wusiwig), changing die results, rolling too many/ too few dice, ‘Misremembering’ rules Bringing books for wrong editions (changing data in books) No army lists Asking for perpetual redos / ‘I just forgot to do this’ (but refuses opponents the same ‘rights’ Fudging measurements Etc lots of other toxic behaviour like dropping opponents figures if they are losing, stealing figures, constantly asking for rules clarification to slow games down so they can win.

I forgot to add. They give excuse to the behaviour with a number of points. *regards to GWs policy of its your game do what you want that’s fun for you. (They say they enjoy the extra intrigue of braking the forth wall). *Warfare isn’t fair and any tactics should be allowed, it’s your fault for not knowing as much as them or been careful in watching them (fog of war) *Lastly they are open with their antics and so if folk agree to play there against them then you can’t complain.

@@TacticalTortoise thanks for the link, I appreciate that. In my opinion, your video/report on the incident was just that, a report as to what happened. It was not defamation, insulting or an attempt to attack the cheating individual. But by keeping the individual’s name from your report because he/she and their friends might get mad is allowing the trolls to take the tolls. I get that comment fights are not what your channel nor any channel is about but I also think it’s a small price to pay to discourage what I consider the worst behavior in the game. If I was a TO how am I to know if this cheater is attending my event. If I am a cheater and I see someone was caught but no one found out who it was, I would be encouraged to continue. Idk, that’s just my opinion. It’s not on Tactical Tortoise to police the hooligans but I do think if you’re going to report an incident, the who/what/where/when should be a part of it. Cheater are a curse and it gotten worse in all kinds of video multiplayer game in the past months or it is just because more (cheater) play those games. I had to stop 4 games in a row of 40k via tts this months already because I catched my opponent cheating, like changing the size of their minis while moving them, abusing the dice rolling system of the game or the mod, adding command points, telling lies about their abilities from the start, having wrong stats in the profile etc. etc. I've seen much. It seems like that the inhibition threshold is pretty low for some when playing 40k via a pc, even though they are in voice chat with the opponent. And it annoys and dissapoints me a lot, ruins the time I spent playing and leaves me with a bad feeling/mood. It is worse when its not even a competetive game. I somewhat can understand the urge to cheat in a competetive game, somewhat, but in a friendly one ... like srsly why? My trust in the online community of 40k players is by now deeply scratched and I do not know if I'll play again with randoms via tts ... Another reason why not is that I am done with getting insulted or badly spoken to, because my spoken english isn't as good as the written and I am not a very fast tryhard, chess clock, comp player.

If its like 100% sure without any shadow of a doubt some person was intentionally cheating then lifetime ban is ok. But like, would hate to see someone banned from a hobby they spent so much time, effort and money in because they make a few back to back mistakes which side in their favor. 4 year ban for cheating honestly sounds like a good middle ground. Person will age nearly half a decade before they get back into the mix, maybe that will be enough time for them to mature and think about their despicable actions which led them there :3

I think a lifetime ban for things would need to be very closely looked at something would have to be seriously done to warrant it. I'm pretty much thinking things like that can cause more damage than not especially as a lot of things can come to hearsay. Smaller things that are enforced feel better. The year long itc points ban I think is kind of their recorse but also that depends on how many times they can prove this happened.

He would manipulate dice, manipulate rules, manipulate turns, try to manipulate you, he would move his nids further than allowed, he would surround further than allowed with his models, he would place his models illegally when deep striking to get as many out there as possible, on top of one another and laugh about it to make it seem like he was the one suffering, he would use rule effects more times a turn than allowed. such a complete fucking asshole, and he would be smug about winning. a ruthless narcissist, that pushed everyone around him away, as he deserved. he knew the rules and he chose to try to win by cheating. Good, there needs to be a harder stance taken on this. Now I think trying to make Warhammer into an e-sport (or t-sport as it may be) is ridiculous if there's any hope at all for it to get that kind of traction there needs to be a zero-tolerance standpoint on cheating.

As more events start giving out bigger prizes or any cash prizes, this will only increase. The risk/reward favors cheating. We've seen this with M:TG since its inception in 1993 (the value of booster packs even at release was such that essentially any packs were effectively a cash prize). There is only two ways to correct this: limit prize support or drastic and draconic punishments for cheating. What's draconic? A player who acts this brazenly probably should have a lifetime ban from ITC events. There is no excuse for this behavior, it was extremely obvious that he was cheating, he benefited from cheating and everyone he played was impacted by his cheating. The one year ban would be more appropriate for lighter infractions. In no cases, however, should the player be allowed to participate in future events until their ban is served. The idea that this guy could attend events and cause more trouble for his opponents or worse, find new and more subtle ways to cheat should be considered. Regardless, no matter how much ITC doesn't want to, it will have to start taking responsibility for the integrity of their events.

ITC can't exactly stop a player from playing, but they can and SHOULD void ITC points. That's without a doubt clearly in their power.

I'm not sure that a life time ban for one verified game of cheating seems a tad harsh. I am a fan of the 3 strikes rule for something that final. I would like a system that allows for people to change and grow, discourages bad behavior and rewards good behavior. I do agree that a nuclear option like a lifetime ban is nessissary, but should only be used when a variable pattern of cheating has been proven. Or you could just do what some of the people on reddit have put forth and have him killed... that seems a bit harsh to me.

I have been guilty of doing the exact opposite of that. Where if im going to win or the other players is just rolling trouble ill throw dice and pick them up and say it was a miss. Even did it this weekend i let them know after but pulled the oh man i totally forgot my archon has 7 atk the whole game. And even didn’t reroll 1s for non kab troops even though i was playing a raid detachment

I have this hypothesis regarding "scummy players" in wargames - there is a fixed percentage of douchebags in the world. The bigger a community is the more (absolute number) douches are present in that community, so you hear/see more of that behaviour as a result.Any crackdown on behaviour of that is very much needed, though I would prefer it to have a sort of "redemption opportunity". Thanks for the vid.

Side note, ITC is no longer the “Independent” Tournament Circuit, it is now the “International” Tournament Circuit. They’re pretty big now, and now give balance advice to GW, so they are no longer independent.

Couple of comments. Kinda felt like this video was click bait Mr. Turtle. Hyping it ahead of time and then not even naming the culprit? Life time ban would be too harsh. As humans there is still such a thing as redemption. He has to carry the stigma of this forever and I am sure it will affect his KZbin channel or the ones he participated with. Lastly I think you are wrong that GW gives a wit about whether someone cheats playing their game. They are a model company. I am aware they once rewarded someone for good sportsmanship in a very publicized tournament though. But that was self serving PR in my humble opinion.

I have to say I'm against "life time" bans as a general principle. Because theres then no road to redemption...people need to be allowed to rehabilitate... not just in 40k but In life generally, punishment yes life time bans no

Exactly. It's like in any sport/competition, cheaters cheat to get an advantage. It's only reasonable to assume that the highest ranked players are more likely to be cheating then those that rank pretty low. And yes, some maniacs manage to be bad while cheating... but usually cheaters run towards the top til they get either outed as scum, or get away with it and hailed as the "greatest".
