I like the strategy shift! A lot of creators seem to get stuck on the concept of maximizing their CPP value and never shelling out cash for a stay. At the end of the day, I’d rather pay $100 for a hotel (especially if you’re getting 10x back in the portal) than use 20k points on a $500 hotel just because I’m getting a “great value” CPP wise.

Luke you point out a real challenge for travel/ point enthusiasts… booking reward stays vs booking what we really need and want. On most occasions I don’t mind paying cash, and in some cases really have to, book the hotel for me and the fam that requires a specific place in a city, with a specific accommodation, with a specific room layout, etc. As I get older I’m slowly leaning more and more to the CSR redemption portal to get EXACTLY what I want from a hotel. Great vid, thanks!

There are other programs like Acor (Fairmont..etc) and Preferred (Pendry..etc) and so on. Chances are, those hotels are in Amex FHR so you don't really need status. From a viewing perspective, I'm glad you are doing this. I've piddled around the the Chase and Cap One portals. I do wonder if having 3 10x options (Chase, Citi, Cap One) will give you enough pricing variety to get a good deal. From my legwork for my own travels, the deals are pretty hit and miss in each one (Cap One Premier collection looks expensive most times). But having them all may solve that problem.

I've gone the same way in shifting away from expensive cards. Closed 10 cards in the last year. In 4 years I'll have lifetime platinum with Marriott and then I'll close all my Marriott cards for good, I wouldn't need it anymore. When I was in Greece and Guatemala I didn't stay at a chain hotel and I actually enjoyed it. It's all the same at the end of the day, just more or less service you're use to.

The problem I have with travel portals is the flexibility and easy of making changes if needed. A few months back I had a flight I booked for work and needed to change it a few days before. I think for me a better strategy (unless it’s a busy time of year) is to just book the first night with a chain. Once I’m there I can get a better idea of where to stay and maybe book that through a portal. Lessens the chance of needing to change.
@airbornebackpacker6840
@airbornebackpacker6840 3 ай бұрын
I really feel this sounds complicated. I understand some of your thoughts on staying outside of chains, which I 100% agree with. I like unique AirBnB’s. But I still don’t see how you’ll earn enough through portals to justify the issues you can potentially run into.

I think I chose my words poorly. I said I’d be using portals and I meant that I would use them but definitely not exclusively. I only meant that along with points and cash, I’d pick the actually property i want to stay in. Instead of trying to find a particular chain. So it really is much simpler. Find the property I want regardless of brand and book it in the best way.

I use 2 times cash card back to cover meals and gas spent on road trips that we do twice a year and IHG for hotels, American Airlines and Alaska airlines (has a 70k bonus for spending 3k for business right now) for my flights. They partner with American so I replenished my points. I have a Venture card for transferring points if needed. I open cards in my husband and my name plus we both have businesses so I open one in each of those two and I put all my business expenses on to get the bonuses. If you find a lower price publicly available, you can just call up Capital One and they will give you a travel credit for the difference of the price! As a bonus, you do get 10x points on the full price of the hotel when booking - i.e. if the hotel costs $500 on the portal and $400 publicly, you get 5000 Capital One miles and a $100 travel credit on the portal. @@LukesPointsandMiles The AirBnB's are a great choice because you can experience many places throughout Peru. Some are as cheap as $20 a day, and they're pretty nice. Of course there are higher priced ones that are fancy, but when it comes to affordability, the cheaper ones are a blessing, haha. Mostly all of the main hotels that we know of are located around Lima. It doesn't leave too many options when going outside that area. 10x at hotels is nice, but the portal is usually 10-15% more expensive than booking direct or the next cheapest travel site. It's been hard to make the Chase portal math out, even with the 8k bonuses they run. Capital one is a bit better since they price match, but the match is in the form of travel credit. Eventually that credit will need to be used on a flight, or else you're just continuously price matching the same credit back and forth.

Most of our stays are with points, and while I'll make good use of the Surpass credits by paying cash at my weakest redemption stay, I have no interest in another round. The ridiculous part of all this, I would be better off spending $60K on another Aspire card used for business, than spending $100K on the actual business version!

I just recently hit this point with Hilton loyalty. It felt like I was going back and forth between the Orlando Waldorf and FtL Conrad to make the Aspire ‘make sense’. Truth is I’d rather stay at a Disney Resort in Orlando and I much prefer South Beach. Love the Roosevelt but frankly I got my best deal using the Platinum card and FHR.

Side note, check out the Loews in South Beach. Saw some good rates on it recently through FHR. It’s quieter up north of the park. Also have some grocery stores and decent food back a few streets that are more reasonable than resort food.

hi, I have an upcoming 3 to 4 month hotel stays later this year & I am choosing which hotel cards to pick, there are Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott and Crowne Plaza in the area.. also I can get the Chase WOH, Hilton Surpass & Aspire, Bonvoy Brilliant & Bonvoy Business & Chase IHG Premier.. out of the Hyatt Globalist, Hilton Diamond, Marriott Titanium or Diamond, IHG Platinum or Diamond... which is worth spending $30k or more? my family will join me as well so breakfast (and maybe club lounge access) for 4 is an important factor, thanks

I think they all offer quite a bit. I’d pick the one you like best and go for it. If there are hyatts near by I feel like you can really kill it with chase ur point earning cards.

As an IHG employee with a very good discounted rate for rooms (cant use points for that rate). Do you think opening an IHG card as a good idea? Or get like a hilton card just to have flexibility of option

I hear and you out Luke. CPP does matter but what’s usually more important is location, amenities, and situation. This strategy puts you back in the driver seat and not to chase Hilton resorts or whatever the best valuation is. You ain’t a math nerd so why the heck are you acting like one. All the best!

Do actually close accounts or downgrade them to no annual fee cards ?
@LukesPointsandMiles
@LukesPointsandMiles 3 ай бұрын
If I can downgrade I will do that. Some of them don’t have downgrade paths. Hyatt biz will be closed and the chase in preferred will likely be closed as well.

You mentioned getting rid of some cards like the Gold where you now be sporting 3 premium travel cards. Will you really be parting with the Gold? I’ve tried to say goodbye to it but can’t do it.
