For R&D purposes for us & also for PWR Performance Products, we had one of PWR's new rigs (4JJ3 2021 D-Max) in recently at our Gold Coast store.
We fitted one of PWR's newly developed upgraded front-mount intercooler kits, to carry out some dyno testing for them, and on top of that we also carried out a custom dyno tune to the D-Max to suit the new intercooler & the vehicle's use.

Hello rob. I was watching that dpf delete video and why you should never do it. You did it with another man, and in adition to a few 4x4s in the shop, there was a toyota hilux. It ganed 66% more torque. Is there a video on that hilux as 66% is pretty impressive. What was the rig used for to gane such torque, can you remember

Yes, that is our UDT Hilux Nathan. It has one of our Ultimate Torque Packages fitted to it, including one of our high-flowed turbochargers. Those gains are typical of one of those packages on an N80.

They don’t tell you the 2.5 had the same or more standard power but less torque . The new idea of tiny turbo engine to do the same as a nice 2.5 is rubbish the little engine is getting worked hard just to move your 2.5 ton of metal . Also the volumetric efficacy of the little engine is going to be pathetic compared to a 2.5 turbo

What is your stance on catch cans? Do you absolutely recommend that the 4JJ3 have one fitted from new? Or are they really not needed at all and are just an unnecessary modification? Would I be better off saving the dollars for a intake/intercooler/EGR clean before 100,000km?

Yes, we absolutely recommend them. Keeping your intake as clean as possible is a must. A proper intake clean is at least $1000 & you need to do them every 50,000 or so k's as the soot develops. A decent catch can is less than $500 fitted.

@@daveo1559 it can be pushed more IF the car is never used to tow, is never used offroad or on the beach. This is why it's important to always custom tune every car depending on what the vehicle is being used for.

How does fuel economy change after tuning?

Yes it most cases it improves. With the extra power & torque that we will achieve with a custom dyno tune, you will not have to apply the throttle as much anymore in order to get your vehicle to move as much as you did prior to the tune. It will be able to be driven with less throttle & less RPM in the driving cycle to achieve the same result (because torque will be now produced earlier in the RPM range due to the tune). So, for example, you may have been driving it at 100% throttle pressure (foot to the floor) to get it to go up hill properly when towing, but now (after we've tuned it) you will only need 50% throttle pressure to get up the hill - and the vehicle should also stay in the higher gear too instead of kicking down. Therefore, the less pressure on the throttle; the longer it'll stay in a higher gear & the less the engine will now rev; therefore less fuel will be injected into the engine & consumed to achieve the same result of getting up the hill, prior to the tune. Less engine revs due to the extra power from the tune (higher gear, less effort to tow a caravan etc.), uses less fuel. This also happens without towing too, same thing.

Compared to a standard intercooler that is a waste of coin. Terrible design, look at the right angles on that new PWR entry and exit. No wonder it lost power and torque over a tuned standard intercooler.
