2 of the things i got from my mom was a love for martial arts, and the ability to sew. I recently started making my own belts, its a pretty cool and rewarding experience. Im thinking when i have a student reach black belt i will custom make their belt for them. Whats more personal than that?

Ryan im from the U.K im really trying to get to the U.S to your academy in the near future if all goes to plan.I am really big on the idea that if you learn this art then you need to start with the self defence because i found that if you start with sport jujitsu it takes you much much longer to understand it and apply it effectivly.Thats if you work that out at all, to me it sort of sends the wrong message out and i know for a fact most people who quit early would not if they started with self defence. Here in the uk its light years apart from the U.S in the way of schools and good teachers and it being taught correctly, im really struggling to find a good self defence teaching school were i live.I mean they are here but they are just not possible for me to get to them at the moment. My goal is to progress in the art the correct way(in my eyes S.D)and eventually teach other people and spread it that way all over the U.K.Do you know of any good practitionars in the north of England (Yorkshire) if so i would be greatfull for your in put as i have exausted my search and i just feel like im wasting valuble time practising sport and not practising at all.its so frustrating thus im commenting here i watch you all the time and i support your patreon channel. Many thanks.

Excellent belts reviews Professor Ryan Young! ISAMI is actually based out of Tokyo, Japan! With all due respect the ISAMI in Europe is not affiliated with the one in Japan, of which they often say so. In other words the original ISAMI manufacturer from Japan, has made it publicly known that they are separate entities if I can put nicely and leave it at that. ISAMI commenced mainly making belts for Judo as well as Kyokushin Karate, as Sosai Oyama Masutatsu, being both a 4th dan black belt in judo, as well as a Kyokushin Karate tenth dan black belt, was originally one of their most famous and renowned customers. Over the years ISAMI has expanded to manufacturing judo, Karate, jiu-jitsu, Taekwondo, etc uniforms and belts world wide. Your ISAMI black belt with the embroidery, does indeed say jiu-jitsu (柔道) in Japanese Kanji (letters). Just wondering what made you get an embroidered black belt from ISAMI, along with your name and so forth? I have noticed that most Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners are wearing plain black belts and so forth. Though some are now getting personalised black belts, along with their names and degrees embroidered, instead of the good old fashioned medical tape. By the way if you do not mind me asking, where did you obtain your black belt, that you can wear with your regular clothes? That looks awesome! Thank you for such an insightful video on the various belts. While our Kyokushin Karate organisation issues our official, embroidered personal belts from ISAMI in Japan, I actually want to order another belt of my own, from Kataro. Greetings from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 also wishing you, your students and family, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. God bless you all, Osu! 👍 ☺ ✌

Master Dave gave me the Isami black belt. He ordered it as I received it, with the embroidery. As far as the black belt for clothing, I got mine from www.onthemst.com. Lucky Gi makes one, as does Isami. The Isami I’m referring to is www.chokesports.com Not sure if that is the Japanese one.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu thank you for your kind response to my question. I truly appreciate your time and benevolence, in doing so! Ah Chokesports is indeed associated with ISAMI, the original one founded in Tokyo Japan, with affiliates in Osaka, Yokohama, as well as Seoul (South Korea). Again without offending, or stepping on any body's toes, unfortunately there is an unofficial ISAMI store out of Germany, as well one in China of which as I mentioned previously, ISAMI Japan has not acknowledged as one of their official partners. I just jumped on the Chokesports website and they have a picture of Rickson Gracie and some other Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners, with their gis and belts from ISAMI! How nice of Master Dave Kama, to have presented you, with that very nice and embroidered black belt from ISAMI. That and the Kataro black belt, are my favourite from your video review. Thank you for providing the link for the black belt, that one can wear with their regular clothing. I am definitely going to get my hands on one of those. Just curious have you ever reviewed, compared any of the various Brazilian jiu-jitsu gis, that you have used, trained or currently owned? You briefly mentioned the original ones from Tiger brand from Brazil in the early years of the art? Also do you and professor Dave, happen to have a Kama jiu-jitsu Facebook page? Thanking you yet again for your time and kindness Professor Ryan, for answering my questions, Osu! 👍

it's all personal preference. the Lucky Gis belts i used to buy are 1.75", and the Kataaro belts i buy (i have 4 of them) are all 2". they have a thinner version of the belt that "collapses" better when tied if you don't like how the belt unties when new, esp when they're wider.

@@KamaJiuJitsu Thanks a lot for the reply! Do you use the conventional belt knot on the 2" belts? Do they stay tied? I'm looking to get the stiff deluxe version at 2" for my upcoming blue belt promotion - I figure to stay at blue belt for a couple of years. Cheers!

Question...If you are a 2 degree black belt with those stripes sewn on....Does Professor Dave just hand you a new belt with 3 stripes already sewn on? Or do you take your initial belt to a tailor or something to get a nice sewn stripe on your black belt? Or mail the belt back to Kataaro or whichever company and ask for them to sew it on? Sorry if my questions seem confusing and thanks.

You mentioned the notion of not washing one's belt, according to some superstition. Unfortunately that exists in various martial arts styles. Some people say that once you progress to another rank and you obtain a new belt, that they should tie a permanent knot, to retire that belt once and for all. Good God, not to offend anyone however it is funny how the creators of the style, did not create such superstitious and weird, ritualistic practices. To me as you said in some of your other videos, hygiene is very important, when training with one's fellow students. Of which it is important that one washes their gis, belts and other training attire or equipment, as regularly as possible. I use two gis for my training which is Monday to Thursday, then on Saturday and Sunday, I use another third gi, when I train with my own students. I wash all three gis once a week, nevertheless I have trained with some individuals, that only use one gi and good God it seems like they only wash them once a year. The foul odour that emanates from such smelly gis, is putrid! I tell my students to wear clean, washed, tidy gis, along with finger and toe nails, kept short, also to shower and deodorise themselves adequately. No one should be subjected to someone's, offensive and awful hygiene. As for the belts I admit as our style is predominantly a stand up, striking art. I often tell my students to hang their belts on the clothesline, after each training session, or at least once a week, when there is no training, so that fresh air ventilates them.
