Man, the end of the THQ monopoly on Warhammer games is one of the best things that happened to PC gaming on recent years. A lot of double and triple A stuff came out of it.

@@apocratos0174 yeah, only THQ had the rights for the Warhammer games. That’s why they were only a trickle, with games like Dawn of War, Space Marine. Since they went bankrupt the license went back to the owners and they partitioned campaigns and parts of the lore to different studios, so a lot more stuff is being made. Some is shovelware, especially on mobile, but it’s much better on PC.

I wouldn't pin the lack of diversity on THQ: Games Workshop has changed their strategy a lot in the past decade+. When THQ had the license, GW neglected their wide range of games to only concentrate on 40k as Warhammer Fantasy was slowly decaying on store shelves until they decided to do something about that with Age of Sigmar reboot. Since then, they've been doing a shotgun approach to releasing games (having not renewed/rescinded their board game license with FFG to do things in-house, which includes Forge World team.) They've since employed a shotgun approach to video games as well and I doubt they would've kept the same THQ license agreement going.

I'm pretty stoked for this release. It looks like they put a lot of attention to detail and focused on putting out a polished, quality production. As a big Company of Heroes 2 player, it's something that, sadly, Company of Heroes 3 failed to do. My hope now is that Realms of Ruin (and Homeworld 3) will be the flagship RTS titles that carry the genre forward.

Trivia: the first Warcraft game was supposed to be based on Warhammer Fantasy Battles (the predecessor of Warhammer Age of Sigmar). Relatively deep into the development, the IP deal fell apart and the name was changed to Warcraft and some of the lore was changed, but it's still easy to see the similarities (if you know the lore and factions of WFB).

Likewise, I think Starcraft is partially based on Warhammer 40k. The Zerg are essentially the Tyranids. Definitely the biggest similarity. The Protoss remind me of the Eldar - a highly advanced but dying race, with powerful psychic capabilities. Terrans = Imperium. Not just by default for being humans, but also because they have marines. In space. One might say they have... space marines.

IIRC one dev wanted for WC1 to be a WHB game but the rest shot it down, and as for starcraft, it takes a shit ton of stuff from scfi things, like Alien and maybe 40k for marine armor and thats a bout it, i dont know where the hell the myth that SC1 was suposed to be 40K game came from,if you look at SC1 dev history.

@@einarsdarznieks6082 no, warcraft was initially titled Warhammer and was written as a Warhammer game. It wasn't just one of the dev team, since it got all the way up to the point where GW were involved and a Warhammer demo was made. In regards to SC, the relation is indeed much weaker. When blizzard developed SC they already had a successful privately owned IP (warcraft) and didn't need to give away a portion of their profits for having a stronger brand. So they took some loose inspiration like mentioned in the post above mine, but that's it. Warcraft was literally a Warhammer game for a large part of its development cycle.

Though this looks good, it saddens me to see what was fave genre in the 90s has become today. Why isn’t anyone making a traditional base building RTS? The last good one IMO was Dawn Of War and all it’s awesome expansions.

I still vividly remember Mark of Chaos as a very good Warhammer Fantasy RTS game. There are a lot of Warhammer games out there, as a result there are also a lot of bad ones, on the other hand there are also quite a few good ones.

Hail the Emperor and his ground marines ! I mean, Sigmar and his stormcasts ! Gameplay wise this looks a lot like Dawn of war 2 to me, which can be a good thing if they refine or add to this formula. But so far it looks less rather than more in comparison.

I know what you mean. It's got the good signs of DoW2 but it almost feels (idk how to describe it) less beefy? Less meaty? Than DoW 2 or even warcraft 3. Still, it at least doesn't look bad! So we can have some hope for the space err, Sigmarines.

They honestly just need to rebuild Dawn of War Soulstorm in a modern engine with all of the races and a big conquest campaign with a Starcraft 2 campaign style upgrade system.

Yeah a DoW remake would be insane. That said if you want to make a serious aka competitive RTS i think 9 factions are just to much for gameplay balance ,its what kinda turned original DoW into a shitshow after Dark Crusade and even worse after Soul Storm, they never got it right. So they would have to decide if they want to make a more casual game with all expansion factions or a more competitive game like Star Craft or release DoW was with only 3-4 factions, maybe 5 at max.

Soulstorm was my jam. I don't think anything has topped that since imo. This one looks to be more of a DoW2 vibe which is fine but looks very light on rts but just squad micro. BTW the end of Soulstorm campaign when they cut to worlds being bombed and erupting in total war across the void was ultimate kino. Shame nothing happened with that and we got dow2 heh.

It's more like DoW2, rather than DoW1. So it stands to reason there is no base building. Kind of a shame for someone like me, who likes the base building aspects of RTS games.

There aren't really any night/dark elves in Age of Sigmar (yet...) There's four "Grand Alliances" in AoS. The Stormcast Eternals are Order, the Kruleboyz are Destruction and the Nighthaunt are Death, which just leaves Chaos! So it will probably be Slaves to Darkness, but it could be Beasts of Chaos, Skaven, or any of the specific Chaos god factions :)

I'm torn on this game. On the one hand, I love AoS and we've gotten almost no video games set in this world. But on the other hand, I don't normally play RTS games and what I've seen of the actual gameplay doesn't seem all that compelling.

I've always thought this kind of RTS were the best fit for AoS and I relaly hope this goes well, sadly I can't say I'm particularly thrilled about it, since Warhammer is all about the factions you play and this game has none of the ones I like, in fact it has most of the ones I hate. Hoping the chaos side gives me something good but 80% guaranteed to be Nurgle. *sigh* Maybe if it does well enough they'll had more...

Interesting to see heroes included. Those units tend to overshadow other units, and their demands for playing them well tend to take away from other aspects of the game. If you're just playing one or two hero units while being lightly augmented by a disposable army, then why not just play a MOBA? Thanks for the Check Out. Onward to 300k. All glory to the algorithm.

My understanding is that the way Age of Sigmar launched really irked a lot of people with the way they left the old setting behind and the initial rules were not well received. Personally, I didn't start learning about Warhammer at all until a year or so ago, so now with some of the growing pains out of the way and no attachment to the previous version it seems like a setting for when you want Warhammer but high fantasy, though otherwise is a bit uninspired and could use some depth still.

@@MortismalGaming whoa, I thought you at least knew 40K as the majority of people =) Interesting that you're learning about all warhammer settings at once. Indeed AoS is high fantasy, and a bit...bland in places, but it has some cool things like ossiarch bonereapers (I'm really surprised they decided to add the boring nighthaunt instead of ossiarch) or kharadron overlords. One thing that makes it different from both FB and 40K is that it's story is constantly moving forward and the world is changing, I think that makes it a bit more interesting than other warhammers. Thanks for answering :) Can't wait for your review of Realms of Ruin, game gives DoW vibes, wonder if it will be as good.

Hmmmm I love that you are keeping up with Rogue Trader but there are so many half assed Warhammer IPs out there I hope you are going to be discerning. Very keen to see if we can get a good RTS but man I've flushed money down a toilet on everything since Dawn of War bar Rogue Trader and DarkTide and even DarkTide eats balls once you see all the maps and start the level 30 one armed bandit itemization that was solved in Vermintide but decided to screw it up.

Please try out Total War Warhammer 3 as well! It is an amazing RTS-like game set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles setting. The publishers made some controversial decisions lately and the game is definitely not without it's faults but I still highly recommend you try it out (start with the prologue campaign).
