Thank you for posting this video, very helpful. I have a 2009 Prius with the same console layout, did not even know Prius had a diagnostic to check the 12 volt battery status, until I found it on KZbin. I did this test yesterday, and found my 12 volt battery below what it should be(as I suspected) as the car is about 10 years old(I've had it about 4 years), and don't think the 12 volt battery was ever replaced., I ordered a new battery yesterday, after I did the test, was due for a new one anyway. My Prius, with about 178,000 miles on it had been running rough for a little while now, and I believe the current battery was a big factor. Again Thank you so much!!

Sooo, grateful for finding this. Nearly the same set up on 2016 Rav4 2.5L Hybrid as I just worked it out. Having starting issues for a month, knew it was aux battery as car fuel pump priming slowing when entering car. Turned off all accessories, lights etc. Press power button twice. Wait for inititiation. (I already had master warning triangle illuminating) Press display knob in (not stereo on knob) and flick lights on/off three times. Multimedia panel goes into diagnostic mode. Scroll through to aux battery check..... 9.9V !!!!!! Warning on instrument cluster says "temporary limit on A/C heater power" After a few seconds the main Hybrid battery kicks in and puts Aux battery up to 14.5v to charge it. Needs to wait like this before the car will drive anywhere as the reference voltage also affects the many position sensors in the vehicle like in the transmission and the vehicle tells you to put it back in park. It's a 4yr old AGM battery, very low capacity (45Ah 325cca) for such an electric hungry Rav4 Hybrid. Car has auto everything including boot hatch and we get temps from -10 C to +40C, which isn't extreme, but for all the demand from this vehicle, it's definitely a battery that's designed for finite cycle capacity. But I am the second owner, who knows what the previous owner did with it.

It's very important to note once the car is fully turned on the voltage reading is picking up the hybrid battery voltage. The important numbers for your aux battery come before turning the car on while pressing the brake.

@hybrid324946 жыл бұрын
Hello, if you drive with this mode, you will see that the battery voltage will mostly remain the same when your gas engine is on or off. So there is no alternator. I did not notice any voltage changes when the gas engine kicked in.

Thank you. Very useful advice as I was expecting some voltage increment (keeping the diagnostic screen on while driving), but no rise beyond the 14.3 V. I have the 2008 model and, my mileage being low, the car seems to east 12V batteries unlike any of of the previous I have had (over forty years). The third battery change on this Prius was few days ago, after only three years and only 3000 miles since second battery. Local Toyota offer no clear answer and I am uncertain if they can find out if the 12V battery is actually being properly charged. I shall thus get some dedicated voltmeters / 12V battery analyzers and try to find out myself. Thank you again for your video and advice.

Once the car goes ready it's no longer showing battery voltage it's showing the charging voltage being applied to the battery. The best test you can do in the is to watch for that momentary dip in voltage between when you start the car and when the charging voltage comes on line. If that voltage drops below 10 volts you can expect problems starting the car with red triangles and various lights on the dash. 10.8v is dead for a lead/acid battery.

Great video, thank you! I checked my Prius this morning in 6 degree Fahrenheit weather, the first step showed 12.0V exactly, but when I pressed the button again, it went down to 11.3V-11.4V. When I started the car it showed 14.5V like yours did. Is it normal for the battery to have less power in freezing temperatures, or should I take it in to get looked at?
@hybrid324947 жыл бұрын
Form my experience the 12V battery is always a problem in cold temps. I would say that if your is able to power the car on normally and you drive frequently enough to charge it then it'll last till next winter. I got a price quote over the week for the 12V battery, and TOYOTA quoted 299. So basically double-triple the price of any normal battery.

hello, is your dashboard illuminated? Do you hear the typical clicking noises when you first start your car with the push button? IF you don't hear the clicking and the car won't let you shift/ or dashboard is not illuminated then you need a new 12V aux battery. The 12V battery is responsible for all the power system before the main hybrid battery is operable. let me know, thanks..
@Deathcabforeli6 жыл бұрын
Everything turns on and it shows all the warnings signals on the dashboard too I don't hear the clicking noise though.
@hybrid324946 жыл бұрын
if theres no clicking noises as normal that means your fuel and other realys are not switching on and car will not start. It needs more juice, your best way to check for sure is to jump start it. If you jump it and it starts then you know it's your 12V battery that is weak.

hello, definitely looks like your 12V aux battery is low and not taking a charge well anymore. The running mode voltage about 14V is good, a sing that the main hybrid battery is fine. I find that these 12V gel batteries die every 4-5 years. Your symptoms sounds correct for a weak battery too.

@rondhole3 жыл бұрын
Only in warm weather >12V is a good parameter. In cold weather, the best number is not the maximum voltage but the voltage reading under load. As long as it is above 11 V when the ignition is on, it is OK. If the headlight+heater/defroster+AC blower are all on, it should be still above 10V. This is the best parameter, not the voltage without any large load. Bad battery often shows ?>12V and drop under 10 V, often as low as 8V when under load.

All you need is to get a USB power plug that has a display.

Too bad this wasn’t a way to check the hybrid battery. A 12v is cheap and easy to replace buying a used Prius the most important thing to check is the HYBRID battery

hey buddy! you can indirectly check the voltage your HYBRID drive battery is putting out when you power the car on, you will see the voltage will jump to around 14V, this is showing you your HYBRID battery is fine. Since this car has no alternator, it uses the voltage from the Hybrid battery right after startup from the 12V pack. and BTW, the 12V gel battery cost about 350 to replace from the dealer, and there are no aftermarket ones for this car that will not void any warranties or are a direct fit.

@@bv2745 This isn't a good check for the hybrid battery. priuschat.com/threads/how-to-test-the-hybrid-battery-condition.176496/ is how I figured it out for me. A laptop or an android phone + a $15 OBD wifi reader will tell you everything you need to know.
