A lot of people seem to prefer the Diane years, but shoot me, but I prefer the Rebecca years. I was born in 1981 so I only remember Cheers in its final seasons. I was never introduced to the Diane character until I started watching the show in re-runs later on.

+GBoi1 I Like both for different reasons. As the show went on, the characters were flanderized (became exaggerated versions of what they were.) HOWEVER, I did not care for Diane, and prefer Rebecca, who was more quirky and fun, compared to Diane who was a busy body and snob. And I didn't care for her relationship with Sam either.

I much prefer the later Cheers. Way funnier show and those episodes have aged well.

You had to see the relationship Sam and Diane unfold, especially in real time, to appreciate what it meant for *Cheers*. For all their ups and downs, S and D was a magical pairing. I recall how the country eagerly waited to see their relationship unfold. Each installment never failed to please. Rebecca settling in the Cheers scene would eventually expose how much the series lost its original bearings. I would even say that *Cheers* became a different show altogether, more sophomoric and less interesting. That the rest of the characters were getting a bit too sclerotic for my taste didn't help.

Lay off Kirstie, she was a perfect contrast to Diane, basically she was sam malone in a skirt which made the Rebecca/sam relationship a more ballsy, wisecracking affair.

I loved Rebecca. Diane was good but she fell for Sam too easily and I like that Rebecca wasn't that way.

@jksonny no but is was in the first two seasons. Sam told Diane he was going to a cultural event to prove a point but came back to the bar with the date and admitted going to Star Wars... Diane asked a question relating to his ex-wife and Carla says something like "that was his ex-wife.":)

I like Rebecca better, she represents an independent woman, Sam thinks her life revolves around him and that he is so irresistible, but she couldn't give a crap less. Good way to burst his bubble.

No matter who they got to replace Long though, the replacement was never going to be anywhere near as good. The show was sam/diane and both were excellent in the roles.Once Shelley Long quit, the show lost its magic.
