Dr. McDougall is the founder and director of the nationally renowned McDougall Program: a ten-day program that he and Mary McDougall host where medical miracles occur through diet and lifestyle changes. Dr. McDougall has cared for thousands of patients for 5 decades. His program not only promotes a broad range of dramatic and lasting health benefits but, most importantly, can also reverse serious illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and others, all without the use of drugs.

I was that one overweight child Dr McDougall refers to - the one who was ridiculed. It continued for 50 years. Led to psychological & emotional damage alongside the physical. Now in my 60s I am following the program & am at a healthy weight. It is a miracle. Thank you.

@@crystaltorres7313 careful she recommends starches. They aren't good for everyone. I have Leaky Gut which is the main issue in losing weight for me. Starch are a no-no as are nightshades. Basically a very strict HIGH(est amount) NUTRITION foods only...Clean water, de-stressing in various ways etc...It's not just the food, but that's a vital part as are any plastics/harsh chemicals in your household/around you some can affect your hormones and things like mold can also wreak havoc in the body. Best to see a doctor or do a test with a credible company to see whats even the issue. What works for one person might not work for another

When I walk my dogs - I used to listen to music. Now I listen to Chef AJ & the McDougals. I went vegan in January of 2021 and immediately lost 11lbs. Trying to get my other 11 off has been a struggle. Monday I started the Mary’s Mini and I hope to get another jump start to get this last 11 off. My husband & I saw Dr. McDougal speak at the VegFest in Portland about 10 years ago. We followed his plan until different situations took over. I’m happy to say we’re back on it and I pray we stay healthy for many years to come.

Dr McDougall, you and the other plant-based doctors have saved my life. I was morbidly most of my life. Eating wfpb sos free has been a game changer. I have been on a weight loss and anti-inflamation quest and it has been successful to date. Originally I was over 400 pounds but then experienced a plateau at about 300 pounds. Last Doctors appointment I was 301 pounds. I have since dropped down to 285 pounds eating potatoes! I have never been hungry eating in this fashion, indeed quite the opposite, I have been absolutely stuffed! Instead of counting calories, I have eaten when I am hungry, and abstained when I wasn't.

Ive been listening to these great interviews with Dr & McDougall & Mary. I’m listening from Ireland & can relate to his love of potatoes. Irish people’s staple diet consisted of mainly potatoes for centuries. Back in 1845 to 1849 the potato crops failed due to a late blight causing a major famine. A million people starved to death & many more emigrated. Any Irish person that says they don’t like potatoes is looked on with great suspicion by their fellow countrymen 😄. Love your videos & am following the Mc Dougall diet now. I’m sure with that surname you must have a few Irish ancestors. Thank you & keep up the good work 😊

Love these weight loss videos, I have a mental illness & food addictions! Achieved weight loss goals but my weight always fluctuates by 10 lbs. Boxed cereal is the worst in the winter because I'm drinking hot coffee & munching on dry cereal with it! Dr. Mcdougall is so right about avoiding tofu, nuts, seeds, olives, avocados & nut milks, weight goes right back on me the next day.

Now that dr Mcdougall said it, it makes perfect sense. As Asian our main course is rice. Everything else including meat/egg/fish are side dishes. Most families live on rice+ veggies. If you’re well off, you’ll have 1 fish+2 veggie side dishes for the whole family. Sometimes we eat rice with braised potatoes.

I had to smile when I read your "rice with braised potatoes." Yesterday I mixed my beans and rice in with potatoes I'd cooked in the IP. I wondered if I was overly starching. LOL Anyway, it was delicious and definitely filling.

@@dmbmeister0 yes, this is the reason i hailed hallelujah when my former trainer recommended that i read dr macdougall’s book. I was restricted by mother when i was 13 because she thought i was fat (was only 35kg at the time). She only allowed me 1 scoop of rice (the equivalent of 1/2c) w/ loads of veggies & meat/fish/egg. I’d rather eat my usual 3 scoops of rice+veggies (include potatoes, carrots, radish along w/ greens & squashes) than eating all those meat. I found meat often got caught between my teeth & unpleasant. These days i’d eat my 4 scoops of mixed grain rice w/ a bit of beans/tofu & loads of veggies. So filling i couldn’t be bothered to snack on chips my daughter always offers me.😂😂😂😂😂

Great interview and discussion! I am having a very hard time with the Kempner weight chart because I have never been that weight since I was about 10-12 years old and I have never been overweight in my youth or in my teens or much in my adulthood. So that will never be a standard I hope to achieve. And I do disagree… you *can* lose too much weight and look just as sick as someone who is highly overweight. Moderation is key. Extremism one way or the other in unappealing to me in the diet world. While I fundamentally disagree on these points, my experience in the McDougall program in general is a sound one that I have benefited from and I am thankful for the scientific work of Dr. McDougall.

My problem as a vegan for 37 years is i dont like to eat. I dont like to feel food in my gut or my stomach period...since i was a kid. The more i have to eat the angrier i get. The more annoyed i get. Potatoes taste good but are too much bulk. I just eat salads and fruit and no starches at all and an avocado a day. Starches dont work for me.. Only raw food works for me. Anything cooked or dead makes me feel an energy drop. Fruit adds an amount of life force way beyond calories. Fruit adds life force. Anything cooked is dead. To me it is dead food. Himans began as fruit eaters and digressed into eating cooked food due to hard times we are devoluting not evolving haha

I bet the people who gain weight on potatoes are in ketosis and getting more than 15% of their calories from fat. They get fiber back in their system, water gets something to hold on to and there you have it - 2 pounds or so of weight in the first days after introducing starches into your diet.

A lot of people are successful on a raw food diet if you get the majority of your calories from fruit. We have the teeth and digestive system of frugivores. We just do. However you have to eat a lot of food and it does take time out of the day so cooking helps add calories for sure.

I truly love chef AJ and Dr. McDougall. I felt a little bad when they were laughing at people who believe that omega 3 fatty acid fats are beneficial for brain health. As someone who watched multiple family members suffer and die with Alzheimer’s Disease, this topic interests me. My dad was tested and found to have the risky Apo4 gene. Anyway, there is some research showing low DHA levels associated with dementia. Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are neurologists and specialists in neurodegenerative disease. Their book clearly recommends 250 mg DHA supplements a day. I think people deserve to know that highly respected doctors- in addition to the Sherzais- read reliable research and they disagree on this point. They are not stupid people who should be laughed at. Also, AJ, isn’t it true that you test your DHA levels and test you consume purslane …. and your levels are over 4? Here in Chicago, I can’t get purslane. Nor can I eat enough greens to get my levels up. There are also doctors like Kristi Funk- a breast care specialist and surgeon- who recommend a Tablespoon of ground flax for the lignan content. This is thought to help prevent breast cancer. Flax is a food with two known benefits. My point is that specialists in their fields have looked at research supporting these things. At least we should say that respected doctors disagree. Even Dr. Esselstyn includes flax. I personally have read all the doctors and will make my own decision. Being super skinny is not my only concern. My family has breast cancer all over the place and Alzheimer’s disease running through the generations. It has heart disease too. I’m trying to do the right thing. Watching this discussion it felt like people who take DHA or flax were stupid and being ridiculed. I saw recently Dr. Klapper stopped recommending DHA. I’m still taking an extremely low dose and following this area of discussion. I have a sprinkle of walnuts in my salad and a tablespoon of flax on my oats. If those are making me slightly heavier- well, I still have a BMI under 20- so it’s minimal. It’s a different issue if a person is an out of control food addict and three walnuts triggers them into an eating binge. That’s a totally different issue than whether a food is optimal to eat. I was an addictive eater when I ate the SAD diet, but after switching to WFPB nearly 9 years ago, I am not addicted. I can have a couple nuts on a salad or a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds on my chili. There are people like Dr. Greger who feel that nutrients are better absorbed with a tiny amount of healthy fats. I understand Dr. McDougall doesn’t agree. And I love Dr. McDougall and I love potatoes and rice too! There are a few substantive disagreements here, but also there are differing emphases. I truly feel better when I include a wide variety of veggies and leafy greens along with starch. I have to watch overdoing starch! I do love it. But the truth is that I feel better when I eat a higher proportion of veggies to the starch. I wish I could eat two pounds of potatoes for lunch! But I do better with a big salad that has some beans in it along with other veggies. It’s all good! Different strokes. We should be kind in understanding that people have real health concerns and are listening to respected experts who may disagree.

You are right--there are many slight disagreements between many of these experts. We all have to make up our own minds as to what we feel works best for us.

First time I ever heard Dr McDougal say something totally false and I definitely would warn people against. Clearly motivated by his trademark. To say that humans aren't designed to eat fruit is ridiculous. Discounting our relationship with apes. Were designed to eat fruit first and everything else second. I love you and potatoes, but potatoes aren't as good as fruit to eat taste or otherwise. This is the first time I have disagreed with you on anything.

My goal is to eventually go whole food plant based... I'm just vegan and eat an equal amount of processed and whole foods... it's mostly time management that's the problem for me

I have found it is way easier eating this way...and I don't spend much time cooking anymore. Rice cooker and a air fryer...Greens I buy washed and ready to go. fruit is easy, just wash it. Frozen or canned corn, black beans in a can. It's so simple once you get used to it. Good luck!

I actually have a genuine question, I know it's a show but if we were really meant to be starch eaters/wfpb how do you explain why people on shows like alone have to survive by mainly hunting for food this is also what we would have done long, long ago.

U could be overeating! I was eating & snacking 6-8 times a day & my weight loss stalled after 25 lbs on starch based diet. I now fast all day & eat 1 snack b4 dinner, then dinner & fruit dessert & have lost the last 25 lbs. Check Dr. Jason Fungs videos on intermittent fasting!

@@NN57143 fear of foods? Like fats and processed foods? Eating out? Do you want to live a life of health, or one of eating what you want? It's not restrictive to be full of energy and eating filling and energizing food. It's not restrictive to eat to live an abundant life. It's not propaganda, it's truth.

@@NN57143 I used to think I would never give up olive oil! Or nuts and seeds(for the most part) these people are crazy!....until the weight stopped coming off and I felt like I was already working so hard and this was hard enough already. I really had to dig deep, decide if I would rather be healthy and slim or stay fat because of 10 minutes of taste pleasure here and there. I decided to go for health, it's worth it to feel this good.
