Joel Fuhrman, M.D. is a board-certified family physician, seven-time New York Times bestselling author (his latest book is Eat for Life (HarperOne, 2020)), and nutritional researcher who has specialized for over 30 years in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional methods. At his Eat to Live Retreat in San Diego, CA, and through his books, television specials, and virtual speaking engagements, Dr. Fuhrman shares his life-saving nutritional protocols with hundreds of thousands of people around the world seeking to recover from obesity, food addictions, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, cancer, and other serious health concerns.
Dr. Fuhrman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (Perelman) School of Medicine (1988). He received the St. Joseph’s Family Practice Resident’s Teaching Award for his contribution to the education of family practice residents and a C3 Cardiology Global Health Award for teaching nutritional science to cardiologists. Dr. Fuhrman also serves as the President of the Nutritional Research Foundation and is on the faculty of Northern Arizona University, Health Sciences division. His work and discoveries are published in medical journals, contributing to multiple ongoing nutritional studies with major research institutions across America.
A native of Yonkers, New York, Dr. Fuhrman is a former world-class figure skater, placing second in the United States National Pairs Championships in 1973 and third in the 1976 World Professional Pairs Skating Championship in Jaca, Spain. Dr. Fuhrman has served on sports medicine committees, advised professional and Olympic athletes, and lectured to athletic trainers and world-class athletes about maximizing performance and preventing injury.
In 2018 Dr. Fuhrman opened his Eat to Live Retreat in San Diego, where people from all over the world stay for extended periods to resolve food addiction, lose weight, and recover from serious medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, and more.

I’ve switched to a nutritatian lifestyle 8 weeks ago when I was in the ER with high blood pressure… I walk tons a day, eat healthy with Whole Foods and lots of GBOMBS… I lift weights and now have dropped 37 pounds and am now under 200, feel amazing and have had to lower my blood pressure medicine and am almost off of it!

When I read his book “Eat to Live” I followed it strict for 30 days and I lost 31 pounds in 30 days. Was absolutely amazing. More than weight loss I mentally felt like a new person.

20 years ago I was addicted to Diet Coke. And just for "fun" I walked to the corner coffee shop and bought myself a bottle of it from a vending machine. Well, let me say....it tasted like Tylenol and burnt feathers, with a slight aftertaste of boiled plastic.

I find helpful Dr. Fuhrman's comments at about 42:00 to 45:10 mindset in treating others with compassion rather than defensively or aggressively when they challenge or criticize your healthy eating.

He is a wiseman. My journey of recovery addiction has taken 30 years, first alcohol, then tobacco, the cannabis and now finally food. It is exactly the same process, the substance is secondary.

I would just like to comment on the peer pressure from friends that you mentioned. I’m vegan but I would say a junk food vegan, who has a tonne of health issues and I’m about 70 lbs overweight. So I decided to try Chef AJ and the other drs advice and eat a healthy plant based diet. I tried to encourage my friend who runs a vegan cafe to try it too as she wants to lose weight. But she told me that it made her really angry that I might lose more weight than her, she even told her daughter that she wasn’t going to let me lose weight and be slimmer than her! She has tried her best to sabotage my efforts and sometimes she’s succeeded but I’ve got right back on the horse so to speak and I’m carrying on. I listened to chef AJ about how long it took her to lose all her weight and that took all the pressure off me, so I’ll get there when I get there! But I’m not giving up, peer pressure or no peer pressure! 😉

I wish you much success on your journey. Once I started eating SOS free, I knew I'd never go back to vegan junk food. Perhaps your friend isn't someone you can be around right now. I know what that feels like and I stopped talking about what my plan was and just did it! Then you see who your friends really are.

"Fast Food Genocide" by Dr Fuhrman is also my favorite book. I was completely blown away. In 12 Step Programs it is suggested that you take a fearless moral inventory. This is a practice to correct the future, by repairing the past in the present. It becomes a daily practice. Repetition breeds recognition. Dr. Furhman does that for our country in "Fast Food Genocide". The middle grocery isles will never be looked at the same way. And you will know why?

What Dr. Furhman said between 44:00-45:00 is true compassion. I wish that was highlighted. I have more respect for this man now. The first video I saw him, he was bantering with another doctor, I think Dr. McDougall.

I think a big challenge for a lot of people is the fact that they love to go out to eat in restaurants. It’s the social aspect of it, and they do not want to give that up. I have a few friends that constantly struggle with weight but they are not willing to change their diet when they go out, they look at it as a treat and eat whatever they want.

It takes discipline to have good health and to manage one’s weight. Constantly looking for reasons to treat oneself is a recipe for disaster, literally. At a restaurant, one should order a large vegan salad. Unless a person brings their own salad dressing, they might have to accept oil and vinegar or oil and lemon juice as the only vegan options. Oil on a salad isn’t the end of the world. A large vegan salad is better than most other options on a restaurant menu. For dessert, I would suggest bringing some dark chocolate just in case there are no vegan choices for dessert.

This is so so true! I just started Dr Furhmans six week Eat to Live and I feel awesome! It’s funny because BMI wise my weight is considered fine BUT as he says it’s the body fat and all of it is absolutely in my belly! So grateful to be here!!!

Thank you so much Chef AJ, I have been Vegan for 6 months. I've lost 30 pounds. I was struggling untell I started listening to your concepts. I was eating way too many sugary fruits and not losing weight. I have switched that to broccoli and potatoes. What a difference. I'm leaving for Alaska Thursday and have a traveling steamer I will be taking with me so I can continue eating correctly. I will be listening to your book on the plain too. 🥰

Thank you so much Chef AJ and Dr. Furhman. What an exceptional talk once again. I had a 6 month post bypass check up with my cardiologist who said my diet of WFPB SOS free lifestyle was hard core. He was trying to tell me little oil is OK. But I am not buying into it. Thank you so much to all of your guests who keep me motivated and on the right path. In particular this time I took note of what damage the cramming I do at the end of the day is doing to my insides.😱

A@Gayle Williams. A little oil can quickly become a lot. I find it best to not keep any in my house and not to worry if, when dining out, something might have some oil in it. Just make the best choices you possibly can and do not intentionally add it to anything. And, keep in mind, your doctor is practicing medicine. He is not a nutritionist.😉

I went low-carb, low/no sugar 2 years ago and lost the 15 pounds I'd always wanted . Cravings for processed food favorites mostly gone. Feel the best at 66.

I have been bringing my own salad dressing with me to restaurants for years. No one has said anything but if they did, I would tell them I have allergies, and since I don't know the ingredients of their dressings, it's "safer" for me to bring my own homemade dressing.

Exactly, If people are timid about bringing their own dressing - remember you already have paid for the dressing. No restaurant makes you pay extra for dressing. They should have nothing to say if you bring your own.

I agree with what he said! I did juice fast for 21 days, my husband for 25 days, though i am not fat. After this, i was 49 kr, my height is 1.53 m. But i became 54 kr after my fasting within 3 weeks. But last year, for ten months i did eat without meat and lots veggie. I did not consume animal protein, only my cookies contained melk. My weight reached 47 kilo. But i did not go without eating. As he said, yes, we should change lifestyle, that time we loose weight gradually each day without getting hungery. I lost weight more when i had veggie food for 10 months than fasting for 21 days. Fasting too many days made me very agitated, unhappy, very tired and made me think more food. I was sleeping very bad for these fasting days.

As always, great interview! I could listen to Dr Fuhrman every day. It's good to keep reinforcing the information to stay on track daily. I loved the suggestion for dining out, that's a good plan. I've lost over 10 pounds in roughly 2-1/2 months following the nutritarian protocol. I actually love my giant salads with all the great micronutrients added in.... the varieties of salads you can make are endless.... I'm also never hungry..... it's a wonderful lifestyle and I'm hoping to fully regain my health back after eating the SAD way..... I'd love to do one of Dr Fuhrman's retreats some day, that would be so much fun and inspiring too. Thank you Chef AJ for all your help in guiding us to live healthy and maintain it through life. Your guidance, interviews and recipes are so valuable in my ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Blessings to you 🙏💕

Nice lecture. When I turned vegan from vegetarian in October, 2021 (thanks to John McDougall's lecture) I didn't find it that hard. Now I am reaping rhe benefits of this diet. I realise the damage milk and it's products do over the years. Luckily I am an athlete, tennis player and long-distance runner and kept diseases at bay! Now at 65 I lecture my loved ones about the dangers of milk and Indian sweets laden with ghee! And extra oil we use in our cooking!

Thank you Chef AJ for doing this to bring awareness to food addiction. I’ve always known that i’m addicted to salt & sugar but never on its own. After watching the first video in this series, i realized that i’m addicted to cakes literally. Hence since going plant based 6 yrs ago, i don’t touch the stuff since there isn’t vegan bakery near me. When i started to bake brownies here, muffin there, i realized that i cannot stop w/ just 1. Nowadays i make Chinese rice cake made of glutinous rice layered w/ jujube or other Chinese dates, redbeans/kidney beans and or other dried fruit then steamed. I could control myself as they’re super filling, i can stop after a 1/2 slice. Then slice them all & freeze. When the craving hit, i could take a 1/2 slice out to steam. Being lazy i usually ended up ignoring my craving. Thank you again for bringing this awareness to ny attention. You rock👍👍💪

Having a foot in two worlds is similar to being “ on the fence”! This ONLY kept me feeling stuck living a halfhearted existence unable to experience the vitality that I’m beginning to feel now after 11 months of dedicated action in caring for ME. This has been a powerful week of insights. I am becoming more aware of my “red flags” and am “armed” with new strategies to support myself. I think Fuhrman is right, when he says that rapid weight gain is dangerous. In 2020, I gained 30 pounds in 3 months, from peanut butter, and three months later....adenomatous colon polyp. I lost the weight (and ate several pounds of raw cabbage/carrot/apple slaw every single day) and the polyp went away.

Occasionally, I'd put all of them in the dressing, if I happened to have it all in my freezer : red bell pepper, avocado, lemon, pineapple, tiny bit of turmeric, black pepper, onion, celery, berries, melon, and ginger.

This was one of the best interviews about WFPB eating I've heard in a long time. It really resonated with me. I love what Dr Fuhrman says about addiction narrowing your world so you become selfish and inward-looking (paraphrasing there). And THIS: "In order to succeed to get rid of food addictions you have to become a leader not a follower ... You have to philosophically change the way you go after pleasure ... in a way that's healthier for the long term anyway." He really speaks from the heart in this interview. Inspiring and informative. Thanks Chef AJ and Dr Fuhrman.

People, don't be hard on yourself. Food manufacturers pay scientists to research and develop addictive food. I drove past a factory yesterday, dedicated to food development. I don't live in America. I live in Australia.

I don't think all drugs are poison. Several are helping me. A lot of them saved my life. I sure hope he isn't saying this diet will cure everything though.

He had me at DEXA scan. I have problematic bone density and have declined to use bisphosphenates or other drug therapies in favor of exercise, diet and nutritional supplementation.

Heads up! Wikipedia lists several MD's who claim Fuhrman's theories lack research? Their mame calling, parlor fad diet is not becoming of them, imo. Better to simply suggest more research is needed. I am a Natural Hygienist & proud of my life style since 1971 devotionary journey.

Chef AJ, I have been learning a lot about healthy eating in your videos. Thank you! As a someone who identifies as a “food addict” and participate in 12 recovery from food addiction, I have found freedom in weighing and measuring my food, and yes, even weighing and measuring my vegetables and fruit! :-) I believe there is a spectrum when it comes to food addiction. While you and others may not have to weigh and measure your food, there are others on the far end of spectrum that need to. I have noticed that you have brought this up in a few of your videos. I sense that you have a real desire to help people recover from food addiction. If you’re open to it, I would like to suggest you not raising this issue. I don’t see how it helps people and if anything, you could be planting the seed in someone’s mind who has a problem with volume, question what they’re doing. What we have in common is the desire to be free from food addiction. For some people, weighing and measuring their food could be detrimental, while for someone like me, it’s life-saving! I don't disagree that being heavy is unhealthy. But I think the body positivity movement is less about encouraging people to fat and more telling people who are that it is okay to love themselves regardless of their weight. Fat people notoriously hate themselves and it doesn't help them to lose weight. When they can learn to love themselves regardless of their weight they are more likely to be in the right mindset to decide to lose weight the healthy way.

@@rebeccalake1271 I would do that with raw old fashioned oatmeal. Besides other ingredients I might add 2 tbs flaxseeds, some crushed walnuts, dried golgi berries. It's tasty and also no cooking--no overnight. Or just fruit/s and nuts, mostly raw. For a treat I fix my own avocado toast and tea.
