@lyco46 Did you even listen to the video? A tablespoon of flax seed and 1/2 to 2 ounces of walnuts, depending on body size and need, is hardly "way too much" nuts. Funny how Fuhrman can reverse peoples' heart disease while they are eating such "extremely dangerous" amounts of fat (most of which in walnuts is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, not saturated). His multivitamins are unique in the market, leaving out vitamins he considers harmful and containing moderate amounts of those he considers beneficial. Many people can do well on McDougall's diet without supplementation, but not all. Not everybody's nutritional needs are the same. I don't see anything controversial about supplementing nutrients that are often marginal on a vegan diet in order to prevent potential future problems.

My story is similar to his, getting interested in nutrition/lifestyle for health ever since high school, and now my goal is to utilize it primarily in my future practice! Studying nutritional biochemistry really opened my eyes about the wonderful world of phytonutrients! Nutritional research is needed more than ever, and thankfully more and more funding is sent in that direction :) As for the controversy with the fat, the type of fat matters and they are obviously not all created equally. We need healthy fats for many reasons, but especially for brain health. The studies are quite clear on this! Vegetarians who cut out all fats, even nuts and seeds have a higher chance of Dementia, Alzheimer's, and as Furhman mentions here- Higher chances of cardiac events, strokes, etc. Also, not all starches are created equal! This is why I prefer Furhman's Nutritarian approach generally. Btw, Dr. Furhman looks a heck of a lot younger than 6 years younger than Dr. McDougall!

The worst thing with the Vegsource travesty is how Jeff commits all the sins he complains about from others. He mis-characterized what Dr. Greger said on multiple occasions (still no apology that I have seen) and he also is inept at reading and interpreting studies. He lambastes epidemiological studies and yet does an entire video on the anecdotal reports of one doctor in Japan. He is a hypocrite and youtube drama queen. I have unsubscribed from his channel and no longer view his videos.

Great interview. I have been following Dr. Fuhrman’s Eat to Live for almost 6 years. The emphasis on nutrient dense foods with very small amounts of fat from nuts and seeds has worked beautifully for me. 60 pounds dropped in the first 9 months and kept them off without effort. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and prediabetes all reversed. It makes me sad that some have maligned his character. He is a hero to me. The value of the information in that book is inestimable. His vitamins are a good value if you comparison shop, by the way.

Thank you for handling the interview the way a friend and colleague would. We can only grow by continuing to seek the truth.

I appreciate Dr. McDougall speaking directly with Dr. Fuhrman about the differences between their two dietary approaches. After starting with a starch-based diet, I now follow the nutritarian diet. For me, I feel better eating this way. I still eat some starch, some oatmeal for breakfast, or a cup of brown rice or quinoa with dinner. But the emphasis Dr. Fuhrman places on vegetables and salads has dramatically improved my energy and well being. As I encourage my patients to move towards plant-based eating, and to eat as many vegetables that they can, I recommend they start with either The Starch Solution or Eat to Live, depending on what they find they are attracted to. Those who are wanting to be 100% plant-based, and who love their potatoes, will probably feel great with Dr. McDougall's plan. Those who are not ready to take on 100% plant-based, and who still want to eat a bit of animal food from time to time, but are okay with reducing their consumption of grains and potatoes, then Dr. Fuhrman's approach is probably best for them. I am very happy that there is more than one option as far as eating a primarily whole food plant-based diet.

Adversaries by definition means "one's opponent in a contest, conflict, or dispute". They both treat each other with respect for each other though they remain passionate and steadfast to their protocols. Fuhrmans protocol is not unlike McDougall's. Fuhrman still promotes starch but not to be the centre of the diet and rather, promotes (GBOMBS) Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, Seeds/Nuts ie GBOMBS than McDougall. At the end of the day, they promote a WFPB lifestyle and one must find what works best for them. Personally, I incorporate everything as well as Dean Ornish's holistic approach 😊

You both sound excellent and I'm very happy we have professional, strong, charismatic and intelligent leaders. I have to watch the videos and it works to keep me motivated. I ate some sort of pretzel chips with sugar added once, and accidentally drank a few 2 liters of soda awhile back, but that's it. I don't get tempted at all. I'll see some banned food on the table and my hand may move towards it but I stop and don't feel tempted; as long as I don't start eating the really addictive stuff again I'm fine. I have mentioned this before, but I eat bread twice daily for the vast majority of my calories and protein. I also eat raw spinach with each meal for a total of 5 ounces daily. I just purchased a bread maker and my estimate is a savings of 15 minutes of labor (kneading, mixing, cleaning) per batch. At 2 batches a day for 10 years, I estimate that's approximately 90 full days of saved labor time using that purchase. The biggest benefit of the bread machine is having bread ready in the morning the time I wake up, and evening when I eat dinner. I can set a delay on this model. I wouldn't recommend a bread machine to people who rarely cook bread. However, if anyone can benefit from such a device, it's me since I use it almost every day. Also, a bread machine guarantees consistency of mixing, baking, rising (the timing etc). Also, it is substantial money savings over baking the loaves in a standard oven. Finally, there is a really good setting, for French bread. I like crust on bread and a heavier center, and it is perfect. The programs are quite advanced in my opinion, with multiple knead, rise and crust darkness settings. I will stay on this diet. It's too easy. Thanks to my hero Dr. Mcdougall and Joel Fuhrman as well as all the other greats.
