In my 1969 wood working class in the Boston public schools, we were instructed to save all the saw dust. Because we were taught to mix Elmer's glue with the saw dust to fill in holes, or stripped out screws, or repair damaged wood with it. This is something that works well with all types of glue.

And Elmer's wood glue and similar brands blend a lot better.

Wood glue and saw dust for blemishes, minor cracks and scratches, and concealing screw heads. But I'd think super glue, being stronger than wood glue, would be best where strength may be needed; like where screw holes are stripped.
@Mr.Robert12 жыл бұрын
Elmer's Glue or any kind of wood glue is what we used to use. As a matter of fact one of the first projects we did in wood class was to take a 2x4 cut it in half then we used to put some wood glue or Elmer's Glue connected with a vice and then the next morning to teacher you would show us that it was actually stronger where the glue was then the actual wood itself trying to break it in half with a sledgehammer that's how well Elmer's glue works on wood when you apply it and use a vice as instructed.
@michaelrandall76672 жыл бұрын
@@jim9219771 its actually the opposite. Wood glue is much stronger than super glue. If you were to glue two sets of two pieces of wood together, one with super glue and one with wood glue, and than hit each with a hammer.. every single time the super glue will fail. I'm hesitant to say the wood glue will never fail but 99 out of 100 the wood will break before the glue does. The only benefit I see to the super glue, besides fast drying time, is it is harder standing alone. For instance in the video where he is recreating the corner of wood the super glue will be harder at that corner but you'd still be better off cutting a block out of the corner and wood gluing a peice of wood there, then shaping it. It does have its place, most of us use both at the same time. The super glue dries fast and holds the piece there till the wood glue dries.

While wood glue & sanding dust has long been a traditional filler to match the original wood colour, superglue does seem to change the colour, sometimes by quite a lot. It can also be inhibited by some woods, pine and spruce for example. Filling holes using sanding dust from the same wood mixed with PVA, Aliphatic resin or even sanding sealer seems to work well. Some timbers seem to react with some liquids. I am doing some mahogany repairs ATM using a very mahogany coloured timber for the repairs. Its the right colour but I don't think it's actually Mahogany. I have noticed that Shellac makes the sanding dust almost white but if I use sanding sealer or PVA to make up the filler, the colour is preserved. PVA remains a bit rubbery so doesn't sand well, aliphatic resin tends to be better for this but I ran out a while ago. Sanding sealer does sand extremely well for an excellent result so that is what I am using now. I do like the results you are getting along edges & at corners though, that's always a difficult bit.

I have an upholstery & furniture repair shop. This works but is actually too brittle for screws. It fractures if you overtighten by just a little. Tightbond 3 is better choice, behaves more like wood. Actually regular glue and a toothpick is better for screw holes anyway. Color match can also be a problem with CA.

I was a flooring installer for over 28 years. I learned at an early age the magic in round wooden toothpicks and Elmer's glue. Also, I carried a small tin of the dark brown shoe polish and if I scratched the surface of wooden furnature or wood trim a quick treatment of rubbing some shoe polish covered the scratch and made it invisible. That little tin of shoe polish saved me countless thousands of dollars on having to replace or hire someone to repair scratched wood. The shoe polish works so well the customers never even knew their wood received a new scratch!
