Chemistry experiment 41 - Golden rain

Lead(II) nitrate and potassium iodide react forming yellow lead(II) iodide.
Hazards:
- Lead nitrate is very poisonous.

I did this exact experiment in college chemistry class today. The crystals actually form pretty quick and when light was shined through it looked stunning.

When a solution of lead nitrate is poored into a solution of Potassium iodide a yellow precipitate of lead iodide is formed. This is golden spangles test. Pb(NO3)2 + KI= Pbl2 + KNO3 The precipitate is Pbl2 (lead iodide) which dissolves at high temperatures and precipitates at lower temperatures . Perhaps we might mention that Ksp is temperature dependent, and that colour comes from transfer of electrons from anion to cation

Chakravarthy Kalyan yeah but your reaction is incorrect: Pb2+ (aq) + 2 I- (aq) -> PbI2 (s) The rest of the ions stay dissolved, so you cannot say that KNO3 has been formed l, as it did not take part in the reaction. Hope you understand now.

It is not 24 karat gold,this experiment "golden rain" where iodide of lead was recrystallized from hot solution by cooling, forming crystals of golden-yellow...So it is just a golden yellow crystals that is all.
