This is the master that my Sifu Master Herbert Pong of Mililani, Hawaii revered and taught his 37 form. I never tire of watching Grand Master Cheng and learning from him, which I at least attempt to every time I watch him. And I never tire of watching him - so graceful, so fluid. He is truly beautiful to watch. My only regret is that I was not fortunate enough to take Taiji from him when he was he in the states - what a wonderful treat that must have been. And although he was not an American he should still be considered a national treasure for what he brought to the United States. What a fantastic remastered video. Mahalo nui loa and aloha…

His moves look remarkable, like a statue that has come to life. Beautiful. Grand Master Chen was absolutely remarkable ❤❤

Here is the secret how Cheng's performance differs from others. In many movements, his hands are "swung" to position, not "moved" to position. Of course, Cheng has to "move" hands to position often but he does it effortlessly. That means his is totally "song"(relaxed). He has very pure Jing which travels the path foot>hip>waist>hand, unblocked. Most people's Jing is blocked somewhere along the path. Never overlook the slight difference and that's why Cheng is so powerful. Cheng's movements totally comply with Chang San Feng's principles: "hands are not hands, every part of the body are hands". My teacher also taught me to "swing" hands but I don't think I can do it as well as Cheng. Most people including those "masters" on KZbin always "move" their hands to position. They also lay low in order to be looked good but their Jing is truncated. Now you have good eyes to tell the difference.

Refer to what Cheng says in his book about the coordination between 動 ("move") and 蕩 ("sweep/swoop/sway") when going from 履 ("roll back") to 擠 ("press").

CMC only accredited a movement from a swing, he says "momentum" for one posture ...white crane. The movement you describe as a swing is brought about from the internal path. The connection that is cultivated internally. External teachers may achieve it as a swing.

I should clarify my memory ...the transition from white crane to brush knee he described the arm movement as "momentum". Translation of his ...New Method of Taichi Chuan Self Cultivation.

@@eddienugent2135 I'm not sure if this note was in response to my 動 vs. 蕩 citation. I'm afraid I have only the Chinese original and not an English translation or exegesis, so I can't really pinpoint the citation you recall/reference. As a Chinese language teacher and a taiji practitioner, I've always been fascinated by how taiji concepts are rendered through language, as they do shape our individual experience.

Master Wm. Chen came to class one day in 1975 and told us Prof. Cheng has died and today's class is cancelled. At that time I didn't realize how great he was.

@@taijiboz Great to see details in movements. For the form He actually cheats with the step a few times to to satisfy the camera,.... So the actually form is a little off, in some stepping parts, as he is filming himself. The quality of the footage however and the possibility to close study Proffesor Chengs movements is realy superb. Thanks.

I recently began practicing TCC with an instructor who studied for many years under Abraham Liu in San Diego. Six weeks in and I'm beginning to remember the first few movements up to 'embrace the tiger'. I'm also holding a couple positions for as long as possible and practicing arm movement in bow position. I feel like I'm getting stronger and better able to support myself on one leg. I have been watching this video daily in the morning and evening!

Abraham Liu was a good friend of mine (John Painter). He always emphasized doing Zhan zhuang (Standing) in each of the Taijiquan postures. It really increased the power. From John P. Painter

CMC was “an inside and recognized disciples 入室弟子” by 3rd generation master Yang himself 楊澄甫, but his movements were different than other disciples, by adding his understanding of Taoist Theories - Following nature as ruled, which you can see commentaries in his books plus many dialogues with his master Yang. If you’re interested in his thoughts then you are required to read his books than just purely copying his movements. I learned traditional Yang’s Taiji boxing 85 forms in late 70 last century and learned 37 short forms from his disciples 2 years after his death , and had questions why CMC’s movements are in difference than others from the same master? If you are not loose your interest and practice, you will find answers and get benefits. May we all have happiness and health in life beneficial from Taiji!🙏

☆☆☆Un point amusant. À noter dans cette vidéo que le professeur Cheng n'avait pas assez de place dans la piece et a été obligé de faire un pas de recul entre le coup de poing vers le bas et le brosser de genou vers l'est. ⛩🤗🧘‍♂️🧘‍♀️🤼‍♀️🎎

IMO, analysing Cheng's Tai Chi is pointless. What I see is, he doesn't care about conventions, rules, precision of movements and postures. He can do so, because his Tai Chi is way beyond these restrictions. His style is 100% personal. His postures are sloppy, because for him, it doesn't matter. They appear sloppy, not because he couldn't do them any better, but because he's internalised them to the highest degree. Trying to mimic his style would be just as pointless. We all have to try to arrive at the point where he is (was), by our own means.
