As you guys may have seen, I've been receiving tons of "empty" PGI-29 carts from the CANON Pro-1 which shares the same ink set as the PRO-10 minus DK and LK
Regardless of the fact that they are "Empty" they still contain some left over ink. I aspirate that and collect it into 2 oz squeeze bottles so I can top off my original PGI-72 carts with it and continue to enjoy OEM ink printing.
In this video I reset and fill one Empty Chroma Optimizer PGI-72 Cart. This a process called "The Dribble Method" and yes, it takes several minutes per cart to perform. But in the end you will have the most accurately filled and most reliable PGI-72 cart you can hope for.
That translates to a perfectly working and flowing cart.

Boy I went through OEM ink fast. I kept track though and printed "20" 4x6 prints, "24" 5x7's, "22" 8.5x11's, "3" 8x10's and "5" 4x4's. My light grey and chroma optimizer was low with the CO actually giving off a warning. I filled both up with Precision Colors. I learned from you video that you only have like 10 minutes before the print head moves back to the right, so I set a timer for 9 minutes and filled both up with a bit of room to spare. Thanks Jose.

Dear Jose, one question please. For my Pro 10 I thinking to by a second foul set cartige of original oem of all the colors and do the think you say when one color is empty to replace all the colors and not only one. My question is this, when I take of the printer the first foul set cartige which only one of them will be totally empty but the others will have ink, some of them a lot of ink and some of them low ink, can i reset them and refill them with precision colors ink or with some way i must flush the yellow like in the Pro 100? The question is can in each cartige to have oem and precision colors inks together?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 4 жыл бұрын
No no no you misunderstand me the only time you're going to exchange full sets of cartridges is when you end up with two full sets of REFILLED cartridges and not while you're still using oem inks. You do not want to waste them unnecessarily. So exchange them one at a time in other words if yellow goes empty replace it with a second OEM yellow cartridge then take that now empty yellow and refill it with the 3rd party ink of your choice. One at a time. Then at some point you will end up with 10 refilled cartridges and now you have a full set of cartridges refilled. The reason being is you do not want to waste even a single drop of that expensive ink use each original cartridge until fully empty. Once you end up with two full sets then you begin to exchange a full set at a time when one of them goes empty but in order to get to that point you have to use them one at a time so that would be a total of 20 cartridges if you have a second set of Originals

You mean you prefer not to flush??? PRO-10? It would be best to flush but you do not have too. To transition from OEM to PC inks Reset and drip fill them AFTER each cart is empty. There will be minimal original ink in each cart.

@@cheo1949 Why would it be better to flush? I'm asking because I'm a beginner at this. In one video, you said to just keep topping off with the PC inks, and eventually the whole set in your printer will be PC inks. But above you said it's better to flush. Why do you think it's better to flush? I worry about spore contamination, so I'm thinking not to add that step of flushing. LOVE your videos, Jose!

I just want to clarify. So, when I refill an empty cart from the Pro-10 that had previously had OEM ink with PC ink but the other carts have OEM inks, I can top those off too with PC inks thereby mixing the OEM/PC inks without any risk of affecting prints outside of the slight color shift until all of the carts contain 100% PC inks? Also, when removing a cart for refilling, do you have to reset the chip each time you refill, even if you are just topping off or do you just reset when the printer alerts that the cart is empty? Thanks.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
There's no physical detrimental reaction from mixing OEM with PC. When the first one goes empty, reset it and fill it with PC. Then reset and top off the remaining 9 carts with the matching color PC inks. Yes you must reset before refilling and topping off.

Hi Jose. I received my inks from Precision Colors today (in Canada and the shipment was quick and inexpensive). A couple of questions: (1) Should I wait until a cart runs empty and then fill it (I don't have a second set). (2) I see that you suggest refilling the partially filled inks while I'm at it. But how do I go about filling the other carts if they aren't empty? The same procedure all except I only fill the cart to 32 grams since I don't really know how much ink remains. (Does resetting the chip of a partially filled cart do anything weird to the printer sensors?). Thanks.

Sure you can. No problem. By the way MK is only used when choosing Fine Art Matte media and not the regular matte media choice. That uses uses pk. Why? Absolutely not clue why canon has chosen that methodology.

I thought I saw in one of your videos about refilling and only having 4 minutes to make the cartridge exchange.. What if I were to unplug the printer after extracting the cartridges? Would that work and allow one as much time as they need to refill then insert the same cartridges?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but the idea is to never expose the print head assembly away from the parking station for more that it takes to remove and install one or all the carts. So you can not be spending hours modifying carts. No good. Plus after turning aff the PRI ter by pulling the plug will trigger a very large cleaning cycle that will use up about 1/3 of all the ink. What I recommend is a second ready and waiting. When one cart goes low, you replace it with the second one. Then you can reset and top off the cart set you just removed. So for the best practice you will need a second OEM set.

If you ha e ink in the carts then just add ink. The ink inside will keep the ink bag steady and will not collapse. I never have to extract air because I always top off before they are empty. So just top them off till 33 grams.

Hi Jose - I have a Canon Pro-10 and absolutely love it. I will be selling photographic prints and I'm going through a lot of ink printing proofs on different fine art papers. I will be sticking with OEM inks for this and the final prints. I have at least 3 - 5 Canon OEM carts of each color, not all yet empty. I looked at Precision Colors and see they have everything I need to harvest and refill Canon OEM carts (PGI-72). You mentioned possible contamination in this video and that's the last thing I want. My question is, do I need to sterilize any of the bottles, syringes, needles, etc., before I begin using them? If so, how would I do that? Of course, I will buy one squezy bottle and needle for each ink, but do I need to get one syringe and shortened needle (for harvesting) for each color or can I wash them out in between colors (with what, water?)? This, and anything touching the needle is where I would worry about contamination happening. Also, I noticed you didn't clean your cart out before refilling it, so I assume you don't need to? How many times can you do this with a cart? Thanks a bunch for your awesome videos. I've learned a lot!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
You don't have to worry. Only dye inks are susceptible to the point where we would worry. The CLI 72 are filled by dripping ink till they weigh 32 grams. No need to harvest anything. So ply use each cart tille empty, reset with the resetter fro. PC and drip ink in. No need to flush anything. Use the bottles with the short needle which you can a!so get from PC. Load ink from the big bottles into the squeezy ones and work from those.

@cheo1949
@cheo1949 8 жыл бұрын
Did you use an orange clip with syringe adapter to purge the carts? If so all you have to do is load about 5ml of ink, load it into the matching cart, pump the ink in and out several times, suck the ink out. That bit of ink is tossed. Now you can load the carts as normal. This will dilute any water that remains inside the bag. By the way you need the exit sponge to be always wet and never allowed to be dry

ALl carts are purged every time you change just one cart. I always have two sets of carts filled. reset and at the ready. As soon as one of my PGI-72 carts is empty I replace the complete set. Then it runs one single purge instead of after changing one cart at a time which can be every few days. The Domino Effect! After a complete change I can print for a few weeks before I again have an empty cart.

They are rare because people are hoarding them. I've found one set and one set was given to me by a viewer who does not refill. No problem mixing OEM with PC. You will see some slight changes in color as you progress to FULL PC inks. Happens with ANY ink set you start integrating into a complete OEM workflow. Custom Profiling solves that and PC provides Free profiles in 5 different modes for many common papers.

Hi Jose, I'm trying to think of a way to refill PGI-72 carts with OEM inks, that would make sense for us who would like to do it but do not have access to used PGI-29. After watching this video and the "How to Extract Ink from Surplus CANON PRO 1 PGI 29 Carts and them use them for your PRO-10 Carts" I wonder if it would make sense to buy brand-new OEM PGI-29 cartridges for refilling the PGI-72. For sure, having two complete sets of PGI-72 cartridges and replacing them when one shows "low" or "empty" would save purge cycles, thus wasted ink (and of course add to the longevity of the printer). Given the capacity of the PGI-29 compared to 14 ml of the PGI-72, there is already a discount of 16% (based on US retail prices, for instance from B&H). It seems like a win/win to me (less purge cycles and price discount) but your thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated, as always.
@cheo1949

The PGI-29 are 39ml and yes you could use those to refill your PGI-72s. Would not he too economical way to do unless you must print with OEM. You could use that method and then sell the empty PGI-29s on eBay as you can get about $2-3 each If I didn't have that source for PRO-1 carts I would just use the new PC Signature Edition inks plus OEM red on my PRO-10 and PRO-1 as the results are as good as I have ever seen. For the PRO-1000 I will refill my carts with ink from 700ml OEM ink carts from the Canon PRO-2000 / 4000 which you can get for $225 a piece including free shipping to the USA. The inks are the same for some of the colors for the PRO-10 / 1 but some colors are not exactly the same. We are working on that and so far we know the magenta is a bit less dense and slightly different viscosity than the same for the PRO-10/1. We are doing a ton of behind the scenes research to figure a lot of this out. As for me I will be using them for the PRO-1000 and PC Sig Edition plus OEM red for my PRO-10 / 1.

That will come soon. I first have to figure out which of the two ports is the ink exit and which is the venting port. That plus finding a tip that will not only fit but securely depress the poppet valve if it uses one. At the very worst I might have to "heat drill" a pair of small holes ( heat a metal stylus and melt a hole on the rear - no danger of drill plastic chips generated ) on the rear and pour out the ink into several smaller clean bottles. I would prefer some less invasive aspiration method.

WHat you need to understand and we talked about this thoroughly last night during the live stream with PC owner Michael Lee. He spends months and runs hundreds of test prints going back and forth with the ink labs until he reaches the best match to OEM color reproduction. Other companies sell what they receive and just tells you to have a custom profile made to make up for the inaccuracies!

I actually think the process for the Pro 100 and Pro 10 is easier with the drilling, because once you had done it once, it seems as though the process is easier after that. So to be clear for this method with the Pixma Pro 10, there is no drilling, only dripping and with that the carts must be completely empty before the process is over? There is NO "hole" to insert ink to. The external sponge or exit port leads directly to the ink bag. You can use the Adapter that I use in the PRO-9500MKII video and directly with a syringe but, normally it takes me about 30 seconds to refill on of these carts. I did it slow in the video so you could clearly see what to do. So no it is not Painfully Slow. Besides what's the hurry anyway.

Jose Rodriguez thanks for clarifying. I guess your have a good point. It's not like I'll be doing all 10 inks at the same time that often

Right. However, remember that I always have two sets of carts. On in the printer and a second one that I reset and top off at my pleasure. So refilling them is not an issue.

Jose Rodriguez Would you be comfortable selling prints as fine art prints to people using PrecisionColor ink prints? Anything one should consider?

I would not sell anything printed with any ink that was not OEM, unless you state that in the sale. Buyers expect they are getting the best printed with the best inks and papers. That's is my philosophy. You could charge accordingly of course but you would absolutely would need cover your butt by stating what the required display conditions would be to extend the life of the print the maximum possible. Specially is you eell printws done with any third party carts inks.

Oh funciona o no.
