Cheoah ELF - 2 July 2024 / WOR

I got to do an ELF (extremely low flow) run down the Cheoah River as an intro to creeking during Week of Rivers 2024. Running the Cheoah at full flow is extreme kayaking, so this was an opportunity to see a beautiful place and live to tell about it. Creeking is technical kayaking through narrow rocky channels and chutes that requires skill to read the water, control your boat and thread a path through a maze of boulders. Great instruction from the leads in the group and a fun way to explore, stay cool, and enjoy a place that would be hard to see any other way. The part of the river that we did empties out at the base of a massive dam releasing icy clear water, so, of course, the hazing for first-timers is to do a roll in the frigid water.
