I’m not Muslim but my mother comes from a family of daughters. My grandparents had five daughters. People sometimes would ask my grandfather if he was upset or disappointed in having so many daughters and no son. My grandpa always said he was “proud” and knew that his daughters would take care of him in old age. He often said “sons go and follow their wives but daughters always look out for you.”

It's ironic because at the end of the day it's the daughters who help their parents out before and after marriage. Unfortunately even in my Kurdish culture this mentally still exists. I can't count how many times older women have told me " may Allah bless you with 7 sons" or "may you be a mother of sons" and i always reply back " and daughters too!" Alhamdulilah I'm pregnant now with my first child which is a girl! My husband and I cried tears of joy when we heard the news.

And what is the end of those who continue to abuse their daughters and favour their sons? My elder brother stays at home whilst I go out and work and I am STILL expected to cook and clean. My parents see no wrong with this other than the fact that I complain and ask for rest.

@Katrina M so having a loving spouse and obedient children is a sign that Allah has accepted our efforts in the face of hardship? What if we havnt been blessed with living spouses and children? Does that mean our perseverance in the face of this immense tribulation was in vain?

@Katrina M I appreciate what you are saying, I just have a problem with equating good action with the acquisition of material things. Children and spouses are surely that. Instead our good action should be with the intent of pleasing Allah in the hope of the greatest reward of all, to die in a state of Iman and be with our Lord. It's just often times we can be patient and see no fruits of our labour and this can be very disheartening. Instead it is better to focus on pleasing our Lord in the hope that he has mercy on us and brings us out of the difficulty.

The beloved Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) has stated that “When a boy is born, then he brings one Noor (light) and when a girl is born, then she brings two Noors.” It has been narrated in a Hadith that the Holy Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) has stated that “If parents are kind and generous towards their daughters, then they will be so close to Him (The Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) in Jannah, like one finger is to the next.” The Holy Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) has also stated that “The person who is faced with hardship due to his daughters, and makes Sabr (is patient), then his daughters will be a Pardah (curtain) between him and the Hell-fire.”

Subhan Allah, if it wasn't for Islam, this tradition of killing daughters would have continued. those who commit such crimes should be given a death penalty, wallahi, my heart is aching, literally having breathing problems. I have personally suffered the consequences of such blasphemous talk by my own wife, who ranted on both the prophet(SAW) and the Quran. She was later, diagnosed with cancer and suffered a painful death 2 years ago. May Allah forgive her, because in her final moments she called out to Allah for forgiveness and said the Kalima. Although, I do not correlate the two events, it is best for us not to judge God and his apostles. You are free not to agree and lead your life.
