Should you buy Chernobylite in 2023?
On the 26th of April 1986, the world stood still, gazing unknowingly upon the news coming out of the city of Pripyat, after the number 4 reactor of the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant had exploded, leaving behind an inhabitable radioactive zone.
Reports suggested that 31 people were killed as an immediate result, and that number rose to 50 shortly after. However, since then the aftermath reports have been mixed, as the UN predicted that a further 4000 people might eventually die, and others suggesting the numbers could get as high as 300,000 deaths as a result of the radiation exposure.
Since this tragic accident we've seen numerous films, TV series, and of course video games attempting to tell the story of Chernobyl either striving for accuracy or completely embellishing the story to entertain the masses. Chernobylite is the latest medium I've experienced that’s trying to tell its own tale of the Chernobyl disaster and it doesn't pull its punches when decorating the original story with a dark and twisted supernatural perspective.

This game is a vibe man. The combat is pretty weak and the loop is very repetitive. Where it excels is the setting, its characters, their motivations, getting to fully explore the Exclusion Zone in vivid detail is really the highlight of the whole experience

Great review. Been eyeing this game for a bit now. Just saw in PS store for $12ish or so (as of week of Oct 12, ‘23). You seem to include all the good points. Don’t recall music talked about but thats a nit pick. You really flushed out the good and the bad and the length and structure. Really appreciate it. And your edits! Great cut. I know it couldn’t be easy combining those cuts from Chernobyl movie and Simpson memes and all else. Super enjoyable. Earn a like and sub

If your a fallout fan you will most likely will injoy the exploration, Survival elements are simplified and combat is classic but it's not a terrible game.The horror side of the game id like to compare to Blair witch the game,it will give you the chills....

You have become a trusted source, for someone who has been gaming for more than 35 years. My only request would be that you perhaps find a way to be a little more... succinct. 8 - 10 mins is the sweet spot, IMO.

I’ve been on a nuclear kick since Atomic Heart came out. Played through all 3 Metro games, which run perfectly on Deck, and wws surprised to find that after adding a community controller layout all 3 Stalker games also look and run great straight out of the box. Moving on to Chernoblyte now, although on XBox as I picked it up at launch and it’s been in my backlog ever since. Glad to see they’re on season 3 now and they have been providing regular updates to the game. How did it run on Deck?

Wow I started playing this, im extremely impressed. It has intricate aspects that are effortless to learn, it has base building, commanding, decisions, karma, morale yet its as if you already know how to do it all, rather than being frustrating and overwhelming it just works. The graphics and performance are AAA (in a good way) and HDR is perfect with no tweaks, even games like the Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption have questionable HDR that is better left off. I was not expecting this game to be as good as it is.

The radioactive exclusion zone around Chernobyl was absolutely not inhabitable. Some 150,000 square kilometres in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine were contaminated and stretch northward of the plant site as far as 500 kilometres, and it's all still uninhabitable to this very day.

this game was fun at first but i think that the base game was just dumb, i just added loads of chairs to make them happy... it feels like at a certain point i only have pointless skills left to learn, some pistol and inventory slots which you don't really need anyway as you store the stuff at base each mission i'm still glad i played Chernobylite though just i don't see the motivation to keeo playing beyond a certain point, it just starts repeating mostly... it made me dig out Fallout 4 where i guess myself maybe i'm lucky as i've already played Fallout 1, 2, 3 and new vegas back in the day, but never played 4

Yeah this what I’m wondering I had had so many issues on PS4 it was impossible to play. Only did an hour and had to start again. Save file would never work, did it again and the exact same issue so gave up with it. Then as soon as I got my PS5 early last year I got the PS5 version thinking that had no issue and it was the same🙈 Not everyone had the problem it was just a PlayStation thing I believe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Base building is more of less resource check. So if you lets say want to build a gun you need to spend matrials on the work station and on the gun but also now you have to make more eletricity generatots and now you need to raise nuclear protection but now you need to raise confort. It actualy makes you make hard choiches. It is basicaly a fancier way of putting your xp in certaint stats

You can just farm enemies but you gotta watch out for the psyche meter. Too many kills makes you go insane. But then there’s perks to negate it to where you can take out more enemies without the adverse psychological effect, so yes you can just go around popping off.

Stealth mechanic is meh, optimization is bad on the storage side, remember the game loading faster at the load locations before release & there's no optimization of such process with pre-loading to RAM. Other thing that is gone from shooter to psychedelic-style RPG

I played Fallout 3 for about 3 hours quite a long time ago but hated it for its comical angle, so I'm not too sure about this one. If it lacks any humor whatsoever I could give it a try. Oh and about your review: you didn't seem to have mentioned the music and sound fx at all, which I find even more important than any visuals because of their immersion factor. Is there a reason for this strange omission?

Traversing forests or exploring abandoned buildings is not a very thrilling gameplay idea. The main selling point of Chernobylite are the locations we roam around. Given the current situation in Ukraine, this game is the only possible way to explore the exclusion zone. On top of that, because of the detail with which the locations were scanned, it is the best documentation of how Chernobyl looked like before the war. To someone like me, who has long wanted to visit Chernobyl, this fact is enough reason to play it.

I can not disagree with you more. Like I am 100% opposite of your. This game is bad. The story is complete trash. The combat is bad. Igo kills a person. Loose sanity. Having living baby dolls following you. Igo is right at home. No sanity lost. WTF is this. No it should be the opposite. I do not know about you but having these Lovecraftian horror aspects attack. It should really drop your sanity. Not be hunky dory. The base building is a complete ripoff of Fallout 4. Like a copy and pace lawsuit. WTF do you mean you will like this if you are a fan of Fallout and Stalker. This is nothing like Fallout. As for Stalker. Just download Stalker Anomaly and you got a better game. Mission is go out. Fetch X. Build Base and repeat. Had the game a survival mode. Where you focus on just base building/open world exploring. With no story. As the story is the worse part of the game. Where combat does not cause your sanity points and the Lovecrafting stuff drives you insane. Then maybe this game might be worth it.
