I found the position with the domination of the rook on h2 instructive - in that position, I'd take care of my backrank first with some luft but then several plans come to mind - such as advance my h pawn with the goal of restricting his h pawn to keep that rook buried, centralize my king (as endgame kings should be), and realize that his rooks are essentially dead because he cannot move his other rook due to a back rank issue, in terms of piece activity your bishop and knight are far better than his rook, and your other rook is much better than his which is stuck guarding the back rank, therefore a rook to the 7th rank or g- file with may also be a good plan along with advancing your pawn majority. On the g-file he meets Rg5+ with Kf1 which you can meet with Be2+ which he responds with Ke1 which allows your rook to invade on the 1st rank with a skewer to his other rook winning it and the game

I like this format, because it shows some typical mistakes that amateur players make. You cannot get these kinds of lessons from GM games, because they don't do these mistakes.

nice analysis. was this a blitz game? for me it is a bit sad that black didn't appreciate his knight pair. they were crazy dominating and worth a rook each. people should forget that simple economical thinking like: knight = 2,75 or 3 points. rook = 3. it takes away attention and makes you miss chances.

I just saw this series for the first time. I find it very educational and entertaining. I think it would be even better if you switched directly to the analysis board that you show in the last 10 minutes when the need for an explanation arises, even if that would certainly be a bit more complicated. Improvement suggestion: make evaluation bar visible during analysis e.g. in this case to show Martin when he thinks he is only up a pawn that maybe he actually has much bigger advantage/disadvatange due active/burried pieces!

At 5:30 after Rd1 I'd have done, as you say, Bf5+ losing the bishop but gaining the rook. I also saw Bc2 which would allow check without losing the bishop at all if the rook moves from the file. I didn't spot it was also checkmate. Didn't calculate that far :) What level was Martin at the time?

In my opinion, that rook can't be worth very much, maybe value of one pawn at best, as it literally stuck buried in that corner. So sad. Poor rook is crying 😢

At 23:22 I would have simply moved my rook back to a2, since the pawn is now forfeit if I do. Rd4 looked nice, but Ra3 resolves both threats that I create.

It's such a bad rook, that if RH3 was still blocked, I'd probably move it to h1 to force the bishop to trade off for it.

That is why you need good books/courses that already distilled key ideas for you. Please check my courses the Art of Exchanging Pieces and the Art of Awakening Pieces for those recurrent and important patterns, many taken from GM games.

@@raajeshchess Then you look at games from your own openings. You can try to guess the moves of the GMs while looking. Or you can look at a bunch of games with rapid speed (2-3 second/move) to have a feeling of broad patterns and which piece is going where in that very opening.

I don't mean to be disrespectful to the players. But it was painful to watch this and I had to shut it off 10 minutes in. FYI I'm rated 2000 lichess. I'd recommend giving an elo range in the description somewhere for what playing range this would be useful for. I found little value in this. This seems like 600-700 elo

It is interesting you say that, as this video got overwhelmingly positive feedback. Perhaps if you continued further than 10 minutes, you would see instructive moments of the art of exchanging pieces and burying pieces. Martin is not 600 ELO but 1200 ELO.
